Looking For A Host

Looking For A Host - 25/04/01 03:52 PM

I have in my possession a video produced by FLXX on repacking the front bearings on the X/Frontier. Also on the CD is the step-by-step how-to in html format. I have some people interested in this item, but I do not have enough space available on my server to host for the time frame it really needs to be posted. If someone has some space they would be willing to donate, I would be happy to upload it to them if they make it available to all and VERY visible. The total space required with photos and html is 2 Mbs. If you choose to redo the html to match the location it is being hosted on, this is fine as long as proper credit is given and the original text is intact. If anyone is interested, drop me a line at warmonger44@yahoo.com and I would be happy to work this out.

Couldn't you just put the files on on Yahoo or something and make it a public folder? I think Yahoo gives you 30 megs fo file space...I am sure there are others that can do better if more space is needed.

Hey BP, I also have a promotional vidoetape from Nissan about the Xterra that's about 15 minutes long and pretty cool to watch. I'd like to have a way to share that. Do you have a way to do it? If so, I'll send you the vidoetape.

I have the means to digitize video on the SGI - but 15 minutes is a bit large for what I have currently set up... It only has a 4GB system drive and an external 1GB, and the damned 100BT adapter isn't working at the moment, so I can't even (efficiently) use the 50GB RAID over the network.

Damn, 'cause it's a pretty cool video. What if you shrank it to postage stamp size?

If I shrank it down to say, 320x240 or 160x120 then I think it would work out pretty well. I'd have to play with it. Maybe break it up into segments.

It surely can be done and hell, I'll give it a shot.

Sitting here typing on one with 75GB with external 30GB firewire drives.

I love pissing contests. Oh yea, well this NetApp humming in my ear has over 2TB (2000GB) with an identical NetApp in another building for redundancy.

No, I'm saying it's a Silicon Graphics workstation that's some three years old, running Irix - and hence, no such thing as a "C drive." Specifically, it's an SGI Indigo2 High Impact (purple, like Barney) and has the Cosmo Compress board to do video compression and digitizing through JPEG, in hardware, in realtime...

It may be old, but this machine was used to make films like Jurassic Park, The Mask and many, many more. Watch "The Peacemaker" with George Clooney sometime. There are several, long segments - where these machines and the Indy's are shown in the "war room scenes."

It does realtime OpenGL. It whoops O2s and most low-end Octanes. STILL. Great for all manner of things...

It's an ass-kickin' system, but the software is very, very expensive. They use it in Hollywood for post-effects processing, titling and 3D animation, modelling and rendering.

The scientific community uses 'em for realtime data modelling and visualization for GIS and space applications.

I just mount my 50.2GB RAID 0+1 over the network and use that for storage...

I'd take a Mac over a PC too, I think. That is, if given the choice of say MacOS or Windoze. MacOS X would win certainly in my book. But if I had a PC, I'd slap Linux on it if it had the tools I needed - which sadly aren't there yet for desktop video and layout.

MacOS X looks to be just what Mac needed!

Re: Looking For A Host - 26/04/01 02:22 PM

I am a little spoiled. I only have a 4 Gb hard drive on my computer, but who cares? I have a SCSI bus that has limitless expansion thanks to an external cartridge-based hard drive. In fact, I have yet to even hit the 50% used mark on my hard drive. All my web stuff, videos, photos, clipart, etc. is stored externally. Since I don't play games on my computer, hard drive size really hasn't been an issue.

As for the hosting, it will be handled by Gothamist. He has agreed to host the website until it is no longer used. As for the video, since I have finished school until fall, we are going to investigate releasing the video on CD. If anyone would be interested in it, we are anticipating our price to come in somewhere around $5 - $7 for a CD and that would include shipping by standard US mail. If anyone has an interest, let me know so we can determine if producing them is going to be worth it. We are discussing taking copies with us to TN for the plant tour in June.
