what if... LSD question - 29/01/03 11:00 AM

Here's a good backyard mechanic what if...

Let's say you have a 2002 w/o an LSD and 6k miles. Would you buy an LSD from a 2001 with 12k miles on it and swap them out?

If so, how big of a job would that be?

It's really not worth it. The stock LSD is damn near worthless.

Actually, if you're going to go to the trouble, it's a perfect opportunity to tune the LSD to be much better than stock. Basically if you take the carrier apart and reassemble with a couple of extra friction discs into the clutch pack, it will tighten it up and make a world of difference in how it behaves. I will be doing this sometime this year.

Offroad X,
Sounds like cool mod! laugh Wouldn't stacking more clutch discs cause the disc to wear out faster? For example: turning wouldn't the axles bind more and disc wear faster.

Also, can you swap the LSD to the front?

No, you can't swap the rear LSD carrier to the front, they're entirely different.

As for the wear, I'm not sure. Part of me thinks yes, it will wear faster due to the higher pressure when it's slipping. Then again, part of me things that it would be the opposite effect, it wouldn't slip as much because of the higher pressure.

Anyway, here's a good description of the process:
