Install Tips - In Cabin Micro-Filter

Install Tips - In Cabin Micro-Filter - 01/02/01 11:53 AM

Since the roads I often travel tend to be dusty, I decided to try the micro-filter available from Nissan. I understand that some dealers add these to the vehicles to improve their bottom line. Sooner or later, you will have to change them.
The instructions available on-line and in the package are for the pick-up. As you might guess, the glove box design is different. Tanks nissan.
To remove the glove box assembly on an Xterra you will need to locate and remove six phillips head screws. Four are at the corners, more or less, of the glove box and the surround trim. Two more are used to attach the loop used for the latch mechanism.
Cutting the slot for a new install or changing filters is straight foward and covered by the instructions.
Be very carefull when working in there - the edges of the sheet metal supports are *very* sharp. Of course, we found out the hard way.

I get most of my parts from

Cost is less than $30.

The dealer wanted some rediculous price for them, but I found an online coupon for $30, check here if one is available for your area:

And I can attest to DaveDatsun's experience, watch out for sharp edges. I sliced my thumb knuckle nicely when I put mine in the other day. It had just closed and started to heal when I ripped it back open putting my son in his carseat this morning, OUCH!

Brent,

What zipcode did you use when looking for that coupon? I tried Columbia (21044) and unless I missed it, I didn't see any coupons that would apply to the microfilter. I guess it may have expired?

yep, expired end of January. You're pulling the Baltimore area stuff. I also used 20170, where I work, which pulled up the DC area stuff.

Brent -

I was going to order mine from xterraparts but called the Ellicott City and Security Nissan dealers and they both had it for $29.95 w/no coupon. Shipping (xterraparts)would have been more than our local tax, plus I got it the same day.

I did the same thing......The local dealer wanted 70 dollars for the filter. I even had them re check the price. I paid 29.95 plus shipping from xterraparts.com and now I breath alot better..."cough" "cough"

Yep, that's what mine wanted, $70. They're also the ones that wanted $230 for a 15K service when another 10 minutes away was only asking $160.
I nearly lucked out and got the filter for free. I had my X in for the shift plate fix under warranty and for an alignment, and I just told 'em to add the filter to my repair invoice so I only had to pay once. Well, the clerk somehow goofed and put the filter down as a warranty item and I wasn't charged. They called 2 days later to correct their error, drat
As for the alignment, the e-coupon was for $49.95 (trucks slightly higher). The service guy said that the "slightly higher" wasn't exactly accurate, it was well over $100, but he backed down to $90 when I protested. Oh well.

I also installed my own microfilter. Cost at the dealer was about $30 for the part. The instructions are fairly good and easy to follow. One complaint: the HVAC blower motor sits outside the filter, so genuine southwestern sand and dust can still get inside the motor. The filter definitely keeps the cabin cleaner, though.

Oh yeah, be careful cutting the opening, the condenser coil is right there to the left of where you're cutting.
