Skid Plate bolts

Skid Plate bolts - 06/02/02 12:08 PM

Question for you all:
I need to replace all of the bolts for my skid plate (lost them after I took the plate off to mount a siren). What size/type of bolts should I get? I like the idea of some allen type bolts.

thanks

I hate to sound like a dick. But could you be a little more specific on which plate you lost the bolts to? I am guessing the factory front but I can't tell from your post.

Sorry, I'm new at this. It's the factory one that is under the engine. Also the manual states that to remove the plate to change the oil.

Thanks

I replaced my bolts with 6x1 button head/allen key/stainless fastners. (McMaster-Carr) The dome top is less prone to damage and tightening with just an allen key is less likely to damage anything.

firefighter -
A bit more information for you. You'll need 6mm (diameter) X 1.0mm (thread pitch) bolts that should to be 20 - 25 mm long. I forget which length, but I think either will work.
If you read (search) this and the Problems/Annoyances forum it will be clear that the orignal fastners are of very low quality. Many have broken or the threads have stripped. I'm sure we cannot blame everyone that has had a problem because they over tightened the things.
So when you re-install the skid plate don't over do it. With high quality bolts you may strip the threads of the captive nuts - but the bolts will be fine.

dave and xtoy - you've been warned eek

My question is, how do you lose all 6?

All I have to contribute to this thread is that I think the stock pan bolts suck ass. They're way too flimsy and the heads can snap without very much force at all. I hosed one of mine after re-installing the skid after the steering stabilizer install. Argh.

I'm hoping the boys at the dealer will fix it when I get the oil changed along with some other minor service...

Where are you a firefighter at, and did you mount a siren on your X? You have any wig-wags or strobes?
