Nice flex.
How did you get those tires to fit without rubbing? Are they 8's?
I have an older version of that mower, Craftsman LT1000, 12.5hp b&s motor. 6th gear is fun.

Re: Making lawn care fun... - 22/08/06 06:48 AM
lol, yea. If the grass isn't too high, speed mowing is fun (watch out for those potholes, haha) My place is all hilly and steep - that thing has a problem with traction. I've seriously looked at TSC for more of an aggressive tire, but for the ones I want, they are like 60$ a peice. Sheesh! They look something like this:
I ended up filling the tires with liquid, about 60-70%. That really weighs down those tires to get better traction.

Re: Making lawn care fun... - 22/08/06 07:06 AM
I wonder if you could use a small ATV tire.
Then order them online or ebay.
Otherwise, certain Walmarts sell ATV tires.
Never heard about filling the tires partially with water. Pretty interesting idea. Otherwise, maybe tire chains might be an option, or adding a few 30lb weighs over the trailer hitch area.
Our property is pretty much dead flat so speeding isnt a problem, although it cuts like shit in anything more than 2nd gear. But it's all fun
I want to get the plow attachment for the mower, but I dont want to remove the cutting deck in the winter. Not to mention that the plow, weights and tire chains cost $399+ from sears.
Maybe I'll mod something else to work for cheaper.

I thought about that too, but anything that had an aggressive tire pattern in my rim size was quite a bit too wide or tall. I didn't look online or anything, it was just at the tractor supply place.

Re: Making lawn care fun... - 22/08/06 09:17 AM
haha that is awesome! That makes me wish I had a lawn to mow.
Modding a lawn mower would be cheaper.
Hmm I wonder if Paragon would let me in with a lawn mower with mud tires on it. I'd even put a winch on the front.

It would be kinda fun as a side project to put a suspension on a riding mower... and make it real flexy.

When I checked out EROC a few years ago (now werock or something?) there was a guy running some beefy real tractor axles (front 4wd axles) both front and rear. He had the hydraulic steering on both... it was pretty impressive! I seriously doubt he'd have much problems with breaking any part of them.
Nancy21, Come on over anytime if you're looking for fun
- with 7 acres and that little lawn tractor, I pretty much stay on it all the time after work to keep it looking respectable. It usually doesn't look very respectable, haha.
This is about as much as I do as the rest gets really steep real quick

Re: Making lawn care fun... - 22/08/06 10:24 AM
Damn! 7 hilly acres..
I'm using my mower on our little 1/4 acre of dead flat long island grass.
It takes about 45 minutes in 2nd gear.
I hope you can cut it in 6th gear, it would take several hours even that fast.
And, good thing you have a cup holder. That is definitely a 12 beer job.

Re: Making lawn care fun... - 22/08/06 10:51 AM
lol yea, most of it I cut on the highest length setting... I got these industrial strength blades that are about 3 times as thick too, so they stay sharper longer. You better believe I run that thing wide open, haha. I'm pretty sure it's got the 17 or 19 horsie B&S engine on it too, so it can keep up pretty well.
The driveway you see is at the top of this little hill going up to the left
Here's what it looks like from my house out... the driveway is waaay down there in on of the valleys. There's some good offroading up to my house

There is no way I would mow all that.
I'd buy like 20 goats and maybe mow an acre.

Holy crap! Now that's a lawn.
I'm lucky if I can remember to water the handful of plants the GF left me.

Damn you and your great ideas!!
Now I'll have to bolt a cooler onto mine.
And I was busy figuring out which ARB bumper will fit with the least amount of cutting.

hehe, it's usually not in very good condition. The cool part about my house not being anywhere near a public road is no one ever sees how bad my lawn gets. I used to have some bushes, but they got overgrown and I ripped them up. I'm currently in the process of trying to make my place weedwacker free.
Last year I tried to keep all 7 acres clean cut, but it just didn't happen. Right now I'm probably maintaining about 3 acres, and by maintaining, I mean cut when the grass reaches up over the hood.
Here's a short cut from the gravel driveway straight up to the house, haha

Re: Making lawn care fun... - 22/08/06 12:25 PM
I've seriously thought about making some sort of attachment for bush hogging type work... something like the jagged edges of a combine's stalk cutter thrashing back and forth would work well. Then I could get all of my property looking nice and do it in the AC!

i'll have to get a picture of me poping a wheelie on my john deere. fill the bags with grass, get some good traction and a hyrdostatic tranny and you can do it. its on its second motor and like 200th drive belt....i wonder why it keeps breaking. i slammed down really hard one day and broke the hood off and a hinge on the deck.

www.sxfc.org Thanks, but with my steep hills, that just wouldn't get the job done. If I were to get something, I'd be looking in the 25-30 hp range.

Re: Making lawn care fun... - 23/08/06 04:40 AM
haha yea, before I bought my lawntractor, I looked pretty hard at buying an ATV and then just getting a pull behind mower. But everytime I priced out the ATV I wanted, it was about 9 grand, lol.
and zuzuman, I used to drive my grampa's JD all over the place... if you actually got it on pavement with those sticky tires and dropped the clutch, you could easily get them tires way up!

Re: Making lawn care fun... - 23/08/06 09:18 PM
a combine might be a little much. i know JD makes some real nice(and expensive too) mid size 40-50hp tactors. for all that yard, i'd just use a PTO brush hog and use the lawn tractor around the house.
maybe something smaller like this 3320:
im a big JD fan, but if you're looking somethin with some power, id go for a International 1066

Re: Making lawn care fun... - 24/08/06 04:44 AM
yea, I'm hoping to pay off my X this fall... once that happens I'm gonna save up a couple grand and take on another loan. I've seen a couple tractors that were tempting, but if I'm gonna spend 5 grand for something from the 40's, I might as well make that a downpayment and get something from the last decade or so.

[/b]hehe, I worked for my granduncle a couple of summers driving a big old JD 9600 combine. I joke with him saying I'll buy it for 2 grand... that thing would get my grass cut in no time!

That thing reminds me of the movie "Moving" with Richard Prier, but it was a lawn mover.
