Time to get the Paint Dirty

We finally got around to doing the painting my wife wanted. Now it's time to get it dirty..

Wow, it's like you were dipped in ink.

What did you use to paint the body?

My doors are taking a pounding from the crap my tires are kicking up.

That looks awesome.

I have also been playing with the idea of paint the bottom section to match the black that I have been adding but thought that it migh look to bottom heavy.

Paint was the incorrect choice of words, it's epoxy. We used Rust Oleum's Road Warior bed liner product. We had already coated the bumpers, sliderz, and lower plastic trim. She decided to draw the line and make the lower half black. The rack & deflector are painted.

Do the wheel arches, and it can look like Truckin SUV's Project Avalanche.



They fixed the one major flaw in the Avalanche design (other than it just being ugly) by painting over the wheel well arches to hide the squared off edge.

real sharp man! good job. very different. Nissan is probably taking notes on this one! more photos would be appreciated.

I asked Rustoleum a couple of weeks ago

Comments: I need a primer and paint for a custom steel truck bumper.
Stone chip resistant and easy to touch up.

Their reply was:

No, thank you anyway! I just didn't like the lines on the Yellowjacket after we epoxy'd all the plastic (bumpers, trim, etc). I like this much better.

As with any type of painting, the prep work's the hardest and most time consuming. Applying the apoxy took less than an hour and was quite simple. As mentioned earlier, we'd already used the Road Warrior product on the plastic. We'd also applied it to the rock sliderz. It holds up pretty darn well. I've tested the sliderz rather extensively...

...and the epoxy held up admirably.

I've wanted to do this to the plastic trim and possibly the rack tubing...

What would you say the difficulty is in applying this epoxy to the truck parts?

Im giong to stop by the shop today and pickup this exact Rustoleum product, and try (keyword) to do my plastic parts of the X.

The procedure was simple, but aduous. It's the preparation, preparation, and more preparation that made it difficult.

The coating was easy and was done in short order and we applied three coats.

The preparation is not something I wish to repeat.
1) Wash off the dust, dirt, sand, & mud,
2) Remove trim,
3) Tape body panels,
4) Sand body panels,
5) Clean body panels with Xylene (Goof Off),
6) Sand trim,
7) Clean trim with Xylene,
8) Ready to coat

The preparation took about five hours, the coating took less than one (we applied three coats and it needed 15 minutes between each).

I appreciate these instructions. I did this to my truck.

I have a black X, with an ARB, so I only coated all the grey-plastic trim panels (esecept the front grill, I was too lazy to pull the ARB, and I wasn't sure the quality of the Rustoleum Roadwarrior.

Well. Let me say that I am very, very happy with this.

I did 3 coats on all my grey plastic. It looks freakin GOOD. When I told people what what I was doing, they got worried.. But it looks great.

This summer, when I have more time, Im going to pull the ARB, and get the front grill peice, and coat prob the bottom 8 inches of the doors/rockers (whatever ) .

On a side note...

Does anyone know how to remove this stuff from the driveway? I dripped some on the driveway, and I can *NOT* get this stuff off. I used 3 brands of paint remover, and some Acetone. It didn't even effect the dried up epoxy. I then pulled out a chisel, but I ended up only chipping out pieces of the drive way (I am an idiot. ) . Finally, I pull out the sanding attachment for my drill and hit the driveway, and I sand away all the cement, but the epoxy is still there.

THIS STUFF IS STRONG. How can I remove it from the driveway? LOL!

Not a critisizm , more of an observation really : My office is a block away from the John Wayne airport in Orange County and all day long I see the taxis from the new cab company . The paint job on the right looks vaguely femiliar.

yeah... on my way over to your work the other day i say the yellow and black cab and got a laugh out of it.

sorry lee and shanna, i like the mod, but the similarity was alarming considering Logan had his X mistaken for a taxi last year in Long Beach
