Parked with Airbag Deployment? I don't think we are getting the true full story here.

You need deceleration for airbag deployment. Even if you are just stopped at a light they should not go off.

I beg to differ. Airbag systems contain many parts but basically the crash sensors (usually two up front and then two for the newer side and curtain airbags), the SRS control module, and then the actual airbags. The impact upon the sensors is what relays the information to the control module which will decide if the impact is severe enough to fire the airbags. If that Xterra was stopped or even parked and was hit hard enough the system would execute as per its programming not necessarily relying on the deceleration of the Xterra as the impact alone would trigger the system. Same theory as a crash test hitting the concrete wall at 40 mph except the car is moving and the wall is not. The overall goal of the airbag is to reduce forward momentum of the occupants. It would appear in those pictures that the airbags performed as per the design criteria and I would wager probably saved the lives of those in the vehicle (hopefully).

Not true. In the case of a rear end collision there are acceleration sensors that will deplot the air bag as well.

Yep, airbags can/will go off when parked, but the key has to be on. Won't go off if it's parked in the lot.
