Sunday Drive (56k Beware)

Sunday Drive (56k Beware) - 28/05/06 09:17 PM

Earlier this year, I had run across a mention in a forum about some trails organized by the Clay County Alabama Chamber of Commerce. I went to the county's website where they mentioned the trails (actually just an organized trail of existing county and forest roads). When I emailed them to get more information, they sent two very nice foldout maps showing the trails (one is an off-road trail, the other three are geared to sports cars, motorcycles and just general Sunday driving).

The trailhead, so to speak, is about a 90 minute drive from our house. It starts off as well-graded dirt county roads, then gradually gets more challenging as you go along. End to end, we spent maybe 3 leisurely hours on the trail.

Early on today's trip, we met up with two families in a pair of Jeeps and ended up spending most of the rest of the trail riding as a group of three vehicles. They were really nice folks. It was great having some company on the trail, though it would have been a fun trip with just the three of us (my wife, myself and our niece) had we not met them along the way.

It was a blast. This picture (and a couple others) were from a side trail I followed. It was very steep and rocky, with two or three diagonal ledges about halfway up.

The Jeepers declined to follow me. My wife even decided to get out of the truck for this one. My 13-year-old niece, however, had a blast. Looking at the trail maps once I got home, this trail goes on for over a mile (we went maybe 800 feet to the top of the hill, turned around and came back down).

This will be a definite go-see next time I'm in the area. The picture is a little deceiving, but this ledge, towards the right side, is almost 2 feet tall. I tried taking the line to the right side first time, but with open diffs, I found myself spinning once the left-front climbed up the ledge. I ended up taking the left-hand line (where I'm aimed coming back down in this pic).

If this trip hadn't been so "spur of the moment", I'd have posted something on our board. Next time, I'll try to plan a little ahead.

I still want to try to hit Morris Mountain ORV Park some time in the next few weeks.
