Ok, just curious what is it do you do for a living, how long did it take to get it to present and how do you get your wife to let you buy all the toys.
I figure either Im real poor, my wife is super practical or I just "sell" my hobby to her.
No need to answear the qestions its just every time I bring up things I want for my X a fight insues.
We need a support group or somthing for poor balles chaps like me.
Oh by the way nice X.

Re: A work in progress - 10/03/05 03:56 PM
I drove the X home from the dealer in July 2003,
I was not going to do anything to it, just leave it stock, I used my Toyota for 4weelin, river crossings, glacier trips and so on, I was out on a camping trip and saw an X with some light mods and asked the wife it I could build the X, her reply was "only if you upgrade my wedding ring"
Ok, $4000 dollars later the ring is blinding me, but I got the ok for the Xterra.
I ordered everything on line one night and have been working on this for 1 week, all of the parts have not arrived yet, still back ordered, intransit, or being made, as in the Shrockworks rock bars and the rear diff skid plate from Automotive customizers.
No I am not rich, but I do have a well paying job.
I am a material coordinator and part time fire fighter in Prudhoe Bay, AK.
North Americas largest Oil Field.
The hardest part of doing these mods, was running out of beer.....

I'll tell you guys two things.
One: Most women do not understand the value of a modified vehicle to a man. They see it as transportation. Transportation that for any reason other than a point A to point B trip is to be completely ignored.
Two: Women do not understand the costs associated with a modified vehicle. A normal car tire - $60 -70 dollars. Does she NEED to know that your tires were $135 apiece? No.
Normal car shocks are 25-40 bucks. Did she need to know that mine were $250 each? No. Why? It doesn't matter. Why complicate things? She wouldn't undestand anyways.
You need to establish a slush fund. Your slush fund is made up of your gambling money, beer money not used and other assorted cash that you may accrue over the course of the year. Now that you have your slush fund to pad your purchases, you are able to justify paying X number of dollars from the household account for a mod because you are not dinging the account for the entire ammount.
You are padding the purchase with the slush fund.
It makes things a lot more palatable. Trust me. I'm driving arround the $40,000/$25,000 X !

Niiiii-hiiiiice....
Need the differential skid
It's not super important... as the H233B is tough as nails... but with everything else you've got it kinda stands out

Re: A work in progress - 10/03/05 04:24 PM
No, dont need another one, UPS has a delivery date of monday, 03-14-05,
Thats how second day service works here, you pay for it, and they fly it here, but UPS tells you that it's truck freight.
So it sits at their terminal here in Anchorage for a week before they deliver, and you cannot go pick it up.
Lifes a bitch, aint it?

Cool X and it's nice to have a guy from Alaska around here. I've only been up there a couple of times, but I absolutely love it.
When you take trips up there make sure to bring the camera along and post the pics when you get back - shots of wheelin' in Alaska would be a nice change of pace around here.
Welcome.

Re: A work in progress - 10/03/05 05:38 PM
Right now is not a good time for going offroad.
We are having a weird winter, happens every few years.
It snows, then rains, then the temp goes up and down.
Real ugly.
I will take photos when I do go and post them.

pnwbeers
It's nice to see a person who knows about Alaska.
If you call the FEDEX 800 number in Tenn, the people there will tell you that Alaska is a country that they dont deliver to, for a couple of reasons, first, they cant find it on a map, and second, because they dont take Alaska money.
HELLO PEOPLE, Alaska is a STATE, the 49th to be exact. And we use the US Dollar, also the Canadian dollar, they live next door.

It really is...simple, effective, all the right parts done in the right way...Great job...Oh...and if you get a chance...next time you go "glacier traveling" with the X instead of the Yota, make sure to take some pics...We have lots of pics of X's in the mud, X's in the sand, X's on the rocks, X's in the water....But don't think we've seen any pics of an X on a glacier...

Re: A work in progress - 10/03/05 06:29 PM
I will take pics when I go.
I will have to go to a place called Jim Creek, cross the Knik River, it's about 6' deep depending on the time of the year, always cross going down stream, you will end up about a mile away from where you started, I always break rear shock mounts here, grade 5 and 6 bolts dont hold up well, drive a few miles across an old glacier bed, now it's rocks and sand (the usual stuff), the go thru the (tunnel)it's a river pretty much, 4' to 10' deep and about a 1/4 mile long, then another few miles to the glacier, thats about it.

Re: A work in progress - 10/03/05 06:31 PM
To tahoe_x
It is dark here about half the year.
The stock does not light so well.
I also replaced the original white lights with Super Bright Blue LED's.
You can see them in the picture, but when they are all on, I think you would like them..
Posted by: Anonymous
Re: A work in progress - 10/03/05 06:35 PM
I meant to say, you (cant) se the LED's in the picture, but when they are on, the entire cluster lights up, easy to see, and kinda cool (a nice side effect)

"6000 Watt Inverter"
is that peak or continuous? and where did you find room for a monster like that.
I had a hard time finding room for my 600 Watt. I do want a 6000 though.

Re: A work in progress - 11/03/05 12:12 AM
Yup, the Toy is an 1989, first year with that body style.
22re is what it is..
used to ru8n side drafts on it, but the tickets were adding up way to fast...
dual shocks on each tire, dual stabilizers, and kicker shocks on the rear, kept it smooth..

I could get the bolts in the correct way.
Just could'nt get the hands in there to put the nuts on.
I have full sized hands, trying to work on Japanese sized cars.
I put them on the best that I could.

Re: A work in progress - 13/03/05 06:40 PM
I enlisted the help of my 12 year old daughter, she has tiny hands.
Last night we were able to reverse the bolts.
You guys shamed me into it, so I corrected it.
Posted by: Anonymous
Re: A work in progress - 13/03/05 07:13 PM
Putting in a clutch by pass switch is pretty simple.
First you will need a switch, I put in a two postition, (on-off)12 VDC, 15 Amp, not the momentary type, I found with another truck I had that you cant always have a finger on the momentary switch. Never had any bad side effects from using this type
You will need some wire (red and black) I used some 12gauge I had laying around.
Next just find the switch at the base of the clutch peddle, there are two wires coming off this, you want the one that has POS 12 VDC with the key in the "ON" position (not running)connect that wire to the "OFF" side of the switch, run a ground wire from the "ON" side of the switch to ground the other wire coming off of the clutch switch. Test to make sure you wont start in the "OFF" position and you do start in the "ON" position. If connected incorrect, just reverse the wires.
Mount the switch where ever you feel comfortable.

You're the man. I'm looking at heading up to the Anchorage area as a AK State Trooper...what the hell, sounded like an interesting job for a couple years. Wish my '03 Granite looked as good as yours. Llet me know if you're looking to play around on someone else's truck

Re: A work in progress - 13/03/05 08:00 PM
Come on up as a State Trooper,
They have cool jobs, always on the move, you get to see the state, the list goes on.
Yea, when you get here I will help you work on your Xterra.
But your not allowed to arrest me..hehehehe
Posted by: Anonymous
Re: A work in progress - 13/03/05 08:06 PM
If I ever go back to Law Enforcement, I could never arrest an Xterra owner unless I HAD to. And if you helped me work on the truck, I could probably overlook just about anything
I'll keep this in mind if I make it up that way! At least you can still drink in Alaska!

Sure...but I can't seem to get any of them to post on here. PM me your email and I'll send you a couple (you might want to ask the question in about 2 weeks when I have a lift and new tires. Everything that I have actually had the time to install so far is performance stuff..engine work. And I'm making some custom wiring harnesses for roof-mounted lights and for hardwiring in a power inverter and some other things. Let me know.

Pic 1, let me know if this works This is with JUST engine and performance modifications. I have an old GI footlocker in the back filled with parts that I haven't had time to install
but I'm getting there. Let me know what else you want. Hehe I have differential carriers on the counter in the apartment (nice living alone again...sometimes...)
