Brent outmaneuvers a well equipped Rangie - 16/04/02 08:09 AM

Big 8 mb file, but worth it!

I must say, I found this very amusing.

What the heck was going on there Matt? The Xterra looked like it took a similar line as the Rangie but carried more momentum. So either the rangie driver wasn't carrying sufficient momentum or his viscous box wasn't giving him 4wd.

actually, it looks like he just sorta crawled up it, while the Rover kept sliding once he got to a certain point. Choice of line was key too, maybe tire pressure played a role. Ask OffroadX, it was he who did it. I was told those aren't 35" tires... it's a guy from NC, do you have any ideas who?

They're 35x12.50 Swampers, AND he's got a locker in the rear. 2 more Xterras went up after me, and a Wrangler on 33x12.50 MTRs had a few shots at it but didn't make it before we had to return to the rest of the group.

Boo-ya!

Hmmm

Something is certainly amiss there. Not to say there isn't terrain where an Xterra might outdo a Rangie, but I've certainly seen Rangies do much tougher climbs that that, and with less in the way of tires and no lockers.

I really do wonder if his center diff was operating normally. Its a quite common failing in those models and leaves you in 2wd without you realizing it. His locker would hide it even further from him. The front's would have minimal torque applied to them, while the bulk of the torque would be biased to the rear.

I also noticed in the video that he was spinning the left rear tire quite a lot. I woudn't have expected to see that with a locker unless his right rear tire was in the air...

Or both rear tires were spinning. The rut at the base of the rock face was just about the same radius as his tire.
His system was working just fine 4 hours later, no Nissans were able to do this:

The same thing I see a lot here in Colorado (and Moab). Guys who think they can crawl up anything from a dead stop.
Spin, spin, spin... nothing. Momentum is key to any obstacle.

That video needs to be put on POR so they can fuck with the Rovers for a week laugh

Or better yet Ian...would it be possible to post it on a Rover site?

[Spit] that is seriously funny...

what does a rover cost again?

Todrick,

I'd be real careful here if I were you... Firstly that Rover driver didn't use momentum as XOC pointed out, but I am sure driven differently he could have made it. Secondly, I could buy 2 of those Range Rovers like you saw in the video for what you paid for your 2wd Xterra.

Hahahaha,
I love it. That needs to be our poster video.
Or at least 'video of the week'.

Are you sure one of those Rovers only cost $10,000? (with all those mods too)

OffroadX = That was sweet! I guess this is some payback for all the "he is a bad driver" bashing you get from here.

Re: Brent outmaneuvers a well equipped Rangie - 16/04/02 05:48 PM

well, for $4800 (or less) you can get a 1987 Range Rover with:
3" Bearmach lift springs
OME castor correcting bushings
New starter, alternator, fuel pump.

Rebuilt driver's side footwell, door sill, and POR15'd it
Re-did headliner
I added 31x10.5 tires on 15x8 rims.

Swap out the tires for something bigger. add a locker (there are tons of lockers available, many for less than $500.

that still puts you at $6500-7000.

Add an ARB, winch, $8500.

Hmm.... what else. rock sliders, $500
lights, $250
some upgraded suspension components, shocks... maybe another $750.

$10000 well equipped Range Rover.

There, you happy?
