recycling old rims - 19/01/06 04:01 PM

I have an old set of rims in the garage taking up space. I'm positive nobody would want them for a car. I really don't want to throw them in the trash, does anybody know if recycling is an option, I'm assuming they are aluminum. confused

Put them in front of your house with a FREE sign on them. Im sure that someone will take them.

Did the Free Sign thing out in front of my house with a set of F150 Alloys...

They were gone by the time I came home!

Thinking the sign is probably optional in some neighborhoods.

Better yet,put a sign on them that says "for sale,$10" and see how fast they get stolen!!

I took a junk set to a regular recycling place once and they gave me about $20 for them based on the weight of the aluminum....

That's what I was wondering, have a place right down the street, might as well get some money for them instead of letting some smuck take them for free. 20 bucks is 20 bucks.

Around here 1 aluminum rim is worth about 8 bucks. Cast aluminum is worth more for some reason.

So anyway, I've got a few rims I'm gonna take to recycling for a few bucks for beer.

I GOT SCREWED!!!!!!!! mad
I took desert rat's advice and took them to my recycling center, 4 rims weighed in at 80 pounds total. The guy marked them as iron so they only gave me 2 cents per pound, aluminum scrap paid 33 cents per pound. I argued until I was blue in the face, he was convinced that they should be labeled as iron but they were definitely some type of aluminum alloy. Got a whole $1.60 for the set. Would have been better off putting them by the curb.
