I need help - Want to buy tires - 21/06/06 07:21 PM

I have Yokahoma geolander AT on my 2002 Exterra. It has the steel wheels so the tire guy talked me into 31 X 10.50 15 instead of stock size. These tires are the worst tire I have ever bought they are sooooo noisy, they cup and uneven. I would never suggest these to anyone. What is the Quietest tire I can buy and still have some offroad tire?????? [Crybaby]

There are no tires made that will fit an Exterra. [Wave]

The tire of choice here is the BFG AT KO's. But depending on where you live, be ready to drop around $700-800. For a little less, the Bridgestone Dueler Revo is also a popular on-off choice. Type these under "search" and you'll get more info than you need.

Are you sure your alignment is in spec and everything? I've never heard of anyone being that unhappy with the Geolander A/T. I drove an Xterra with them and they were very quiet, though I honestly think my BFG A/T's are even more quiet.

A lot depends on how much of road you want...generally, the deeper and more aggressive the lugs/tread pattern is, the noisier...but, the use of computer aided tread design has allowed some noise cancellation technology to be worked into the newer patterns, reducing the tread noise, etc.

Also - Off road in rocky terrain, vs mud to the hubs, vs mud to the frame, vs sand, and on road on the highway, or in tight switch backs, or gravel, or packed snow, or fresh powder snow, or ice, etc...are all different off/on road scenarios, and can lead to one tire being better in one terrain, and worse in others...and no one tire does all of them perfectly.

You'd need to be more specific for any one to guess what the right choice would be.

As for cupping of the tread, that's typically alignment, or the shocks, more so than the tires at least.

Geolander ATs are not associated with your reported problems, other than maybe being louder than a highway biased tire, etc....so I'd take another look at your alignment and suspension before ruining another set of tires.

HI

I too have an 02 Xterra and I have recently purchased the Yokahama Geolander A/T's 245/70/16.
These have been redesigned with a new tread pattern. I was going to spend the extra dollars on the BF Goodrich A/T's but my tire guy said to try them out and I have been happy with these new Yokahama's. They have a pretty aggressive tread pattern now and they have got me through some pretty deep mud. At $190/tire compared with $235/tire for the BFG's, I have no regrets. Of course that is pricing for us Canadian folks, but I am sure it is comparable for the U.S.

I paid about $150/tire (US) for BFG AT ko's in 305/70/16.

$235? (CD) Sheesh, that's still like $209 US.

[Uh Oh !]

The best tires I know of for what you want are:

Bridgestone Dueler ATs (or REVOswhich look similar):

Toyo Open country AT:

I currently have stock BFG Long Trail T/A on my 2006 SE 4x4. From my limited experience with it I think it's an "OK" tire.
On the other hand I love the Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo, I had them on my 1997 PF SE 5-speed and I thought they were the shit.
I have absolutely no experince with the BFG AT KOs and I would love to hear how they compare to the Revos.

Has anyone heard any good or bad news on the Goodyear Wranglers with Silent Armor?

That's why alot of us Canucks go across the border and get tires in the US, then drive back home.

Cheaper that way, even WITH the gas involved in doing so!

I like the REVO's a lot...if you don't do too much in the way of rocks or deep mud, and they are great on the road!

I go with the AT ko's as a compromuse, they are great on the road (A tiny bit less than the REVO's, which are a hair better on road unless the snow is deeper...), and good off road...again, with deep mud being a weak point...but frankly, I've been very happy with their mud/rock performance.

That, and I'm getting 75k miles a set....which defrays the costs, a lot!

They're kind of new...I know one guy's going to be racing them across the dessert pretty soon, and he's going to report back.

Offhand, they are probably not rock climbers or mud tires, but sand/dirt most likely...as the tread pattern is not at all aggressive like an MT, etc.

I plan on waiting to hear from those using them...as of know, we're all guessing.

Thanks TJ. 99.9% of the time I will use them for dirt...camping/hunting.
