What to do?

What to do? - 02/03/01 02:56 PM

Ok.. I'm in the middle of trying to decide the following 2 things.

1. What kind of rim to put on the X along with 31x10.50 BFG All Terrains.

2. White lettering in or out? I got a '01 Super Black XE 4x4....

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.. I plan on buying the rims an tires around late march / early april at the latest...

I believe the general consensus on this forum is to put white letters in. As for rims I have no idea.

black out always....

as Borderphreak put it "white out is for 70s muscle cars"

If I am correct the 01's have the 16" rims so why dont you go with the 265/70/16's and use your factory wheels. That size is pretty much the same size as a set of 31's. Most of the members that have the '01 X have opted for that route. Unless they went larger of course.

Keep the stock rim.

You won't find any aftermarket rims with the correct offset. Close, but not the same.

The 16" rims are on the SE only...15" on the factory '01 XE's.

Re: What to do? - 02/03/01 07:37 PM

ok.. I'll admit up front.. I'm not to big on rims n tires, so pardon my lack of knowledge here.. but. offset? what ya mean by the offset is different?

And about leaving the stock rims on.. I'm planning on putting some mudders on those mainly for off roading.. But.. I want a rim that isn't stock, and looks good on the X that'll run the AT's..=-P

And ya.. I may sound like I'm spening some un nessacary cash by doin the mudders on the stock rims, but.. It beats wearin down the mudders on the road trips I do..

Legend, this is what happens when you shop for wheels without knowing what offset is. You get stuck with this...

Re: What to do? - 03/03/01 10:24 AM

There are no real problems per se.

If you put a 10" wide wheel on, or a 7" wide wheel with a lot of negative offset, you will have problems because the tires may hit the body under compression.

7" rims are an odd size, unless they are OEM, 8" is common for aftermarket.

Offset is the distance from the centerline of the wheel, to the mounting face of the wheel (where it sits on the hub).

Backspacing is relative to offset, but is measured from the mounting surface to the inside edge of the wheel.

The Xterra has 7" wide wheel, with 40mm of positive offset (positive meaning the mounting face is to the outside of the wheel when mounted).

Backspacing is 7" minus 40mm or 5.43".

When you move to a wider wheel, the offset of the new wheel should compensate for the width increase.

As the centerline of the wheel moves outward from factory spec, you increase leverage on the hub, since the weight of the vehicle is no longer balanced over the bearings.

Steering is also affected, since the wheel is no longer pivoting around the hub, but rotating around it on a different axis.

These issues add up to decreased tire life, different handling and whatnot, but shouldn't be a concern unless the wheel is far off from the OEM spec.

Re: What to do? - 06/03/01 01:50 PM

SO, can I fit a 15x7 wheel with -5mm offset and 3.57" backspace and not have problems with suspension or damaging my fender wells?

I am trying to replace my 16" SE wheels with 15" and get some 31" BFGs

I'm running with -6mm 15x7 Outlaws II for street use, I couldn't quite get my 31's to fit with these rims, so I'm running the long trails still. Ride is smoother and haven't found anything bad running this combo. I've got 15x8 rims from my 4runner that I'll use for my 31's ( similar in offest to the AR-767's ), and then winter duelers on stock rims. I also have a good floor jack

I don't know if anybody is willing to dish out the cash but JAOS offers some really cool rims. They all are 16x8 and have the correct offset for every manufacturer that they make rims for.

I've seen those too and they do look schweet. I'd have them already if they made them in 15s.

It's too bad that they're asking around $500 for each wheel...

Actually, If you buy new wheels from Stockton Wheel they will custom make the wheel to the exact backside setting and offset of the factory X wheel.

Hey Josh,
I am going to get Jaos Rims...Victron II
They are the only manufacturer who designs different offsets for rims...

I contacted www.overlander.com who is a distributor for Jaos...They informed me that those the Victron II rims had exactly the same offset as the Xterra stock rims...

This means your rims will look really cool and also fit your rig just like your stock rims...

The only drawback is the Jaos Victron Rims cost $398.00 Each...

Oh well, If you like 'em get 'em...

The Jaos site is: www.jaos.com
