Shock replacement

Shock replacement - 14/02/01 05:48 PM

Does anyone know what the OEM shocks are on the X? I'm looking for a replacement shock that will perform well on the street, not just off-road. Doesn't look like there are too many choices. Rancho RSX? 9000 series? Others worth considering?

I put in the Rancho RSX's a couple of weeks ago. These shocks out perform the stock shocks both on and off road.

How are they better on-road? I've thought about getting new shocks myself, but I don't want the on road ride any stiffer. The potholes are sooo bad around here already. I don't need my fillings falling out.

Incidentally, since RSX's were brought up--were those ever revalved after last summer?

the rancho 9116 for the rear are very nice. on the street, i usually run em at around 3 and 4-5 off-road. you have to remove the rear sway bars to put them on, but with these shocks you won't miss them. the ride quality in terms of body roll with the 9116s without the sway bars is about the same as with it on and stock shocks.

I was able to install my 9116's while leaving the sway bar on. There's about a 1/4-3/8" of space between the shock and the sway bar. No probs so far...

I've got them set at '2' for the street. Seem to ride quite nicely, and firm. Only had 'em a week so haven't used them offroad yet.

areuin, you will have a nice size dent in the right shock very soon...believe me it happened to a few owners who left the sway bar on..it doesn't matter if you go offroad or not it will happen sooner or later.

thanks for the heads-up. I'll probably end up removing it anyway as having the stiffer shock settings will somewhat make up for not having the sway bar.

I just installed rancho 9000s all around and removed my rear sway bar. After some intense turning and swerving, I can say that the ranchos compensate superbly.

I must have got a lame set of shocks..
I have to run front and rear at '5', or the X bounces all over the place (like 10 ocillations from a bump in the road).

BTW, here's what happens to a Rancho RS9000 if you leave the sway bar on...

I won't post this in the message, because of nature of the photo...

Too bad about the dent...but I like your phrasing...

Incidentally, I run my Ranchos on 4 all the time on the street (bumped them up to 5 a few times wheeling though), but if I go down to 3 or so they still don't bounce...just gets too mushy for my taste.

I saw an ad yesterday in the new Motot Trend for Tokiko offering a new shock -- on/off road. The 'lovely model' was an Xterra. No other info.

Hope this isn't a stupid question, how do you adjust these different levels on the shock....is it like a motorcycle shock where you just turn a dial to select a level? Can a guy reach these easliy to change settings?

Talked with my contact at Bilstein today....he said as of the end of last week, they are in the US. I will be checking with his associate tomorrow for part numbers and availability, and will post info here (my friend is out of the office, so doesn't have the info handy).

A side note: he also said Nissan is showing some interest in MAYBE offering Bilstein's in a factory package (similar to Toyota). In his words, "Nothing concrete - just more interest than in the past."

BTW....when I prototyped the Bilstein's on my Xterra, I also had a minor ding in the right-rear shock from the swaybar - it has been remedied by using a slightly smaller diameter shock body. This was with stock tires, suspension, and rear swaybar. After initial testing, I removed the swaybar.

I think I might have seen this mentioned around here somewhere, but I'm lazy and don't feel like searching (at least I'm honest). Anyway, I was at the bookstore the other day and noticed an article in MT's truck magazine about upgrading the shocks on an X. They had replaced the stocks with some Tokico's and raved about the difference (a pretty complimentary article about the X and the shocks). Anyway, Tokico doesn't have them on their website. They say "under development". The magazine article doesn't say anything about them not yet being available. Is their website just not updated?

Yes I saw that a few weeks ago. DON'T BUY THEM! They are not the X-specific model, and Overlander needs a kick in the ass for representing them as such.
