BFG all terrain T/As - 17/02/01 03:18 PM

Put some new BFGs 31/10.50-15s on today and I love them. They ride great on the road and grab the dirt and mud great as I discovered on a quick 4 wheelin' test on the way home. I posted a pic so I could share my excitement .

No White Lettering Out.

Bad, bad, bad... evil, ugly, ick, yuck...

If your tires are under 33", WLO just looks wrong.

Re: BFG all terrain T/As - 19/02/01 06:19 AM

I didnt trim, but some others did with this size tire. It depends the extent of your torsion lift...although you should only lift the torsion so much before you start to do damage.

Awesome looking tires.... Been thinking about doing the same to my X. Just wondering if any mods should be done first. I see you took off your mud flaps. Any rubbing anywhere?

Now seeing some have done it, now I'm itchin to do it. Planning to put 31 x 10.50 x 15 BFG Mud Terrains on mine.

Re: BFG all terrain T/As - 19/02/01 03:14 PM

No rubbing at all on the road, off road there is a little in extreme situations. The stock mudflaps are still on there....I guess there are longer mud flaps but I never had them. I removed the side bars for more clearance though, and lifted the torsions about 1.5 inches. The Mud terrains might be a different story and rub more because of the meatier tread.

I got them for $108 per tire at MTB. And since the company is renaming to Sears auto center (their parent company I guess), if you purchase with your sears credit card, you get 15 or 20 (cant remember) percent off the total purchase.

Only 108 per tire...I thought that when I replace my stock BFGs on my three-week old X I was gonna have to shell out like almost 200 per tire! i like your tires - looks like they can handle anything.

A PLEA FOR CLARIFICATION:

I'm a little confused then (whats new). If the 31" tires ride fine on the steet and only rub in "extreme off road condidtions" why is everyone doing the cutting?

Although there is a lot of info around here on tire sizing, much of it contradicts. I think a cut and dry answer from an experienced tire expert is in order. Kinda like, "if you want this size, you HAVE to do this" (or even better DON'T have to do this). I know I for one as a novice, would appreciate it (esp if it includes all this business about torsion bars that I know nothing about). Anybody?

Re: BFG all terrain T/As - 08/03/01 08:42 AM

WIth 31s, the tire just catches by about 1/2" on the lip when turning in any situation at the bottom of the front trim ahead of the door (where the splash guards attach). The fix is to remove about 1/2" x 3" of the lip, basically the 2 inside holes for the mudflap attachment. I just helped someone do it a little over a week ago with his BFG MTs.
With anything bigger, you get severe rubbing at the same point, and mild rubbing at the leading trim piece. Completely removing the horizontal portion of the lip takes care of it where the flaps would attach, and a little nibbling on the front trim piece is necessary.
As for "extreme" conditions, you can also experience rubbing at the top of both front wells and the RR well with 32" or larger tires at full compression. That's why people raise the front end a tad with the torsion bars, though there's no easy fix for the rear short of add-a-leafs, shackles, or some other add-on.

That cover it?
Brent

Re: BFG all terrain T/As - 08/03/01 09:08 AM

ok, so what about wider tires in addition to taller, what are the issues there? How far can you go before you need to make adjustments to accomodate the width difference?

Hypothetical question: Would a 2" body lift take away all the trimming issues if you wanted 32" tires?

Re: BFG all terrain T/As - 08/03/01 12:40 PM

Most who have bought larger tires have purchased taller AND wider ones. The stock tires are about 30X9.5X15 tires while the 31s are 31X10.5X15. 32s are one inch taller and wider than 31s. You can find taller tires that are available in the same width or even narrower than stock, but I would just purchase the wider tire to get more rubber on the ground.

Brent, the 1/2" part is correct, but I had to do some more trimming than the 3" width because I noticed some rubbing while turning and hitting a bump/dip in the road (like exiting a parking lot onto a road). I think 1/2" by 4-5" is more appropriate. Either way, no one can see/will notice unless they stick their head in the wheel well and know to look for it.

so the extra 1" in width posed no problem in itself?

Re: BFG all terrain T/As - 08/03/01 03:20 PM

You can't go with larger tires than 32/33" because you still have to get the tire to enter the wheel well during compression. You really can't make the opening between the door sill to the front bumper any bigger without getting pretty drastic, but the real problem is in the rear. Ask me how you can get much bigger than this inside the rear wells (these are 32s)

The rear door opening pretty much makes it impossible to mod the body for a larger opening.

Re: BFG all terrain T/As - 08/03/01 03:46 PM

Agreed--with my Swampers I've found I rub both the front and the back of the rear wheelwell plastic (not at the same time, though.) I've trimmed most of it out but I'll have to start cutting metal to get rid of it entirely...My tires are 32.5" OD, I'm pretty sure Swampwrecker's TSL's (at 32.7" OD) or the 33x10.50 BFG AT's (also at 32.7" OD) are the absolute max you can fit height-wise w/out lifting up the back significantly (i.e. enough that when you stuff, the widest part of the tire won't try to enter the wheelwell.)

BTW, has anyone actually tried the 33x10.50 BFG AT/KO's? I know a lot of people have talked about it.

Yup, I just got Swampers--32x11.50 SSR's.

(One of the main reasons I first looked into the SLR shackles was to help me clear some bigger rubber.)

Incidentally I was at the tire store getting an alignment, and one of the employees had a lifted Grand Cherokee w/ 33" Goodyear MT/R's, which looked a smidgen smaller than my tires...we looked it up, and sure enough 33" MTR's are a tenth of an inch smaller (diameter) than my 32" Swampers.

If you go to the Interco Tire site, they list the actual diameter of the tires and all of the swampers are larger than the stated size. Much different than the rest of the tire industry.

I haven't yet, but I need to. (It's a summer project.) The water in those pics wasn't actually *that* deep, and I've only hit *deep* water (BSM level) a couple of times. Mud isn't really my thing, so I don't seek out deep water (it just tends to be in the way of finding the cool rocky hillclimbs around here.)

Carlton and Swampwrecker seem to be at the forefront of Xterra submersion...not me.
