stock headunit - not loud

Did anyone ever just upgrade teh speakers and leave in the stock head unit? I have some infinity's on order for the back and I plan on doing the same in the front but do you think that I will also have to upgrade the headunit?

THe one that I have is the tape and cd unit in a 2k, and when you get to higher volumes it just gets very distorted....

any ideas?

I didn't upgrade the head unit. Too many upgraded head units cause the truck to get broken into. I upgraded the speakers first (Polk) and it helped, but not much. I invested $80 in an amp from Radio Shack, just to install and try (thinking I'd by a "quality" amp if it worked well). Its AWESOME. I thought I'd wait till this one died before i spent "real money" on a brand name amp, but she's still going strong and the sound is incredible.

Which head unit are you talking about? The single cd head unit found in the XE's or the 6 disc in dash head unit found in the SE's?

I just installed a 12" sub, and that took care of any issues I had.

I was talking about the 6 CD head unit in the '01.
