recommedation on new head unit - 10/05/01 12:56 PM

I am looking to replace the Nissan head unit with one with pre-amp outputs. What would you recommend?

Just about everything out there aftermarket has pre amp outputs. The choices are nearly limitless.

It all depends on how many pre-out you want.CD,tape or both.power.features?

My only recommendation is to get something that is easy to operate...especially if you go offroad at all. Even on the street, the X bounces enough so operating one of those head units overloaded with buttons and graphs and crap could be a royal PITA and a distraction. Oh, and I've had very, very, very bad luck with Sony car audio! FWIW, when I was shopping for my Xterra, only two brands met all my criteria and they were Nakamichi and Eclipse ( I ended up with Nakamichi), but you may not want to spend that much. Of the more mainstream brands, I would look at Kenwood and Alpine personally. Actually, the Kenwood Excelons are quite nice and very similar in design to the classy Eclipse units.

I got me one of these...mine is just the previous year model (2nd link is mine, 1st one I got off Crutchfield). It functions great, and it looks really slick at night:

I have had great luck with an Alpine that I have had for three years and has been installed in several different cars. One time it skipped and they just sent me a new one, no questions asked! I compete in car audio and run a huge system (5 amps over 10,000 watts), so it can definetely handle anything you have. I have replaced my speakers and amps several times, but the head unit always stays the same.
