Flashing "SET"

I experienced this last night and have no idea what was going on. For no apparent reason the "set" light that comes on when the crusie control is on was flashing. The cruise was not on, it had been turned off for quite some time. I had to turn the car on and off for it too go away. Anyone got a clue what that was all about?
