'06 Glove Box for '05

'06 Glove Box for '05 - 23/01/06 10:09 AM

I recently upgraded my '00 to an '05 and, due to some laws in my state, I need a locking glove box.

Does the '06 locking glove box door fit on the '05?

If so, where can I pick one up?

Do a search in the Next Generation forum as someone has a thread on this. From what he says will will cost about $130 to do and it is possible.

So you carry eh?

Don't carry yet, but will soon, figured I should get my ducks in a row.

I figured I was posting in the wrong forum. Live and learn I guess.

Thanks.

Having a gun in the glove compartment isnt going to do much good if you need it in a hurry. Why not just wear a holster?

There are some places that don't allow you to carry a gun, and you'd have have to leave it in the car. And the law in some/most/CA areas state that a firearm must be "locked" up in a vehicle if not occupied.

Even though the Xterra glove box with lock wouldn't do much good to keep anyone out, it would qualify as being locked up.

You're right, I just wish the law were written in a concise enough way that I felt comfortable doing that. The three options for vehicle carry (if you have a permit) are:

1. In a holster on your person in plain sight
2. In a locked box in plain sight
3. In a locked glove box

The problem here is that "in plain sight" is a judgement call by an officer, so he decides whether your firearm was "in plain sight" to him when he approached the vehicle.

Keep in mind that this "in plain sight" and the "in plain sight" that can be used to search your vehicle under "probable cause" are two different things. In the latter case an officer can basically examine the inside of you vehicle via looking through the windows, where in the case of a firearm he/she must immediately see it.

Say I have my gun on the front of my right hip outside of my shirt where it would be plainly visible to an officer of reasonable height. If an officer who can barely see over my door jamb looks, they wouldn't be able to see it.

There is a bill in the Ohio assembly right now that will remove the "in plain sight" restrictions on vehicle carry. Until it passes I would rather just keep it in the glove box and not risk being charged and losing my permit.
