More shelf mod pics - 05/07/01 07:44 PM

Here are some more pics of my completed shelf mod. http://members3.clubphoto.com/cj235973/Jul_5_2001/ I tried to get close ups of the mounting points on both sides and added a couple rearview shots. Still trying to find a better way of securing the back (where it drops down for loading). Right now I'm just using an 18" bungee under the shelf attached at the back 2 tie downs. But it's a pain to unhook to drop the shelf for loading. Look out Thor mod, here I come!

Thanks! I finally found something to hold the swinging rear up with. At Sear's hardware they had these adjustable bungees that go from 6" to 32". I put them at their shortest with one end on the roof tie down and the other end around and over the shelf. It's a nice tight fit, it eliminated the rattling, and it doesn't take me five minutes to unhook to lower the shelf for loading!

just finished mine up this weekend on Saturday... andother Sgt_Lobo/Walrus, etc. Hybrid

Photos here (various stages of install):

I was going to try the t-handle setup... but after I got home from Home Depot I noticed that I got 3"X5/16" Bolts, not rods... so, I decided to forget that aspect of it (for now) ... I have a long (40") Bungee going from one far end of the front grate to the other, and hooking back into the back top tiedowns so I can let the rack loose and it will hold w/out dropping anything... and a shorter.. (16" maybe??) rubber bungee that holds the shelf SOLID... and it's relatively easy to unhook so it's all good...

some of the pics above are kinda crappy... so I will have to try to retake them, but I am quite pleasd w/ the shelf as it is a very easy (and VERY useful mod!)

Thanks Sgt_Lobo/DVS/Walrus, etc! Excellent Mod!

I found that the bungies just do not work. I picked up some short (about 18") cinch straps at REI (like the kind that go around sleeping bags) - they go through the rear tie-hooks, and around the shelf. Work great, plus allow you to let the shelf down as much as you want without having to hold it.
