5 gallon gas can and mount.....

5 gallon gas can and mount..... - 12/01/07 12:40 PM

I wasn't really sure where to post this but figured this would work.

Considering the poor gas mileage my X gets, I'm looking to get a 5 gallon gas can to take with me when wheelin'. I'd like to be able to mount it somewhere so it isn't flopping around in the back.

Is there a can and mount product that easily attaches to the xterra? I want to be able to limit the amount of holes I have to drill to make it work.

If you just strap it in, are you doing it to the rack or in the back?

Thanks for any help!

I was going to suggest a Skid Row Rear bumper w/tire carrier/jerry can mount, but it seems to have disappeared from their website as well as the Knowhere2jeep website...odd

SkidRow no longer makes the rear bumper for the X. You may beable to find it elsewhere. frown

I wonder if ShrockWorks could be talked into modifing their design to include a 5 gallon jerry can mounting. The rear bumper isn't the best place for a gas can ... probably only worse than the front bumper! There are those mounts designed for roof baskets.

Here is a link to a mount I fabbed for my X. Still working out great!

http://www.xterraownersclub.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=002631#000004]Swi ng out gas can mount [/UR L]

As for the rear being a bad place to mount a can? It's a toss up. The can is mounted up fairly high and wouldn't be easily struck by another vehicle, but the threat is there I suppose. I really don't like the idea of having weight up high (in a rack) for off roading. In the event of a rollover I definately don't want a punctured fuel can leaking into my only egress.

Do you think that would be possible for a shrock?

That looks aweosme btw [ThumbsUp]

I don't see why it wouldn't work. The Shrock tire mount is slightly more to the drivers side but that should not affect it at all.

At ~$1,200 for a full setup they were making enough money off of each unit...I bet the interest in them just dropped off.

Thanks for the info everybody, that set up is sweet but I'm not looking to spend a lot on it. I think what I'll do is just buy a good ole Jerry can along with the mount, total about $70. The mount allows you to mount the can horizontally which I will do and mount it to the rack some how.

That seems like a cost affective alternative to a full rear set-up which I would go with if I had the flow!

If anybody is interested, here is a good site that shows both the can and the mount I'll probably go with.

Thanks again!

I talked to Eric at Skid Row the other day. To put all the rumors to rest....

SR is still making the bumper and tire carrier. They are just not stocking the parts but make them as they are ordered through 4x4parts.com.

How does the can fasten securely? via strap you add or some other method. Are you happy with this as I am thinking of buying it also.
