Midwest Xterra Gathering Info - 13/11/03 08:21 AM

Midwest Owners,
I know this is premature, but too much going on this winter, so it is done real early. Whew....Ok, this is what Chris and I have come up for Midwest Xterra Gathering. Some things may change a bit ,but is the core of it.
We are still working on the itinerary that will be worked out shortly. All the information on campgrounds, lodging, and the area is there for you to go over.

Thank you, Dan

Midwest Xterra Gathering 04'
May 6th to 9th

After old man winter lets go of the northwoods, the MadcityXOC annually heads north for some much needed wheeling, camping (or lodging), and beers by the campfire. There are three main reasons we head up this time of year, no tourist, the Wisconsin blood sucking state bird is not out, and we have the trails to ourselves!

In a past thread on XOC Midwest forum some X'ers expressed it would be great to have a Midwest Gathering. This would unite the Midwest Owners and hopefully begin an annually event for Midwest Owners to gather in the Midwest. We are inviting all Midwest Owners and their families to our playground for just that purpose. We have set the dates as 6 though the 9th. To extend this longer, I will be heading north on the 5th, I have to make what I missed last Fall. smile Anyone is more than welcome to join me just outside Milwaukee for the trek north, for some early wheeling and camping. Remember, "It is better to be lost in the woods, than found at home!"

In the following pages you will find information you need on this gathering. If not, please contact us on any additional information you may need.

Dan - MadcityXOC Member (aka Excelagator on XOC Board)
Chris - MadcityXOC Pres. (aka Maximusdelirious on XOC Board)

Chequamegon National Forest

The Chequamegon National Forest is a special place of the northwoods. Offering you the wild and scenic wonders of its diverse landscapes. Totaling nearly 850,000 acres, the CNF was formed by ice age glaciers that sculpted the land surface. Planning off hilltops and producing small lakes from the huge blocks of melting ice left in the retreating glacier's path. Explore the forest for an endless variety of trails and recreational experiences it has to offer.

The Chequamegon National Forest offers all types of offroading to do. Everything from logging roads, to technical trails. In our trips to there, we have only scratched the surface and continue to find more and more challenging trails. The wheeling we have done and do in this area is legal. The rangers are more than happy to tell where to get your X dirty!

Background - Chequamegon is pronounced SHO-WAH-MA-GON, the name is derived from the Ojibwa Indian language and means"place of shallow water". The reference is to Chequamegon Bay which extends north from Ashland, Wisconsin into Lake Superior

Camping, Lodging and Provisions

- Two Lakes National Campground
North of Cable is Two Lakes National Campground. It lays in between Two Lakes, hence the name. The facilities are limited, but quite beautiful views from what I gather. So well worth the stay. These campgrounds fill up fast so reserve early.

- KOA of Hayward
We had the campgrounds much to ourselves this time last year. It is not your typical KOA , the campgrounds are set in a established tree farm. They have showers, a laundry room, and a small store for provisions if needed. The campsites range from tent sites to full hooks for campers. They also have small cabins available if that is your preference.

- Lodging
In Seeley there is a rustic looking lodge called, Lenroot Lodge. Built in the 1930s as a one room school, now converted into a lodge. The Lodge's exterior features recycled material including huge log columns rescued from blow-down areas, heavy beams from the town's former garage and telephone poles that now serve as handrails. Great find guys!

. Provisions
Hayward and Cable is best place for gas, food, and BEER!! Hayward does have a Wal-mart if you forgot something…like your tent, or your toothbrush.

Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association
Camba is the local Mountain bike club. They maintain over 300 miles of trails. They vary from dual track to single track, easy to difficult. Some of the best trails in the midwest are here. You can also hike these trails. The maps are updated more regularly than Wisconsin topo maps. Camba maps are $5 and available online and at New Moon Bike shop on the northside of Hayward on Hwy 63. We found these maps are great for wheeling also.

Town of Seeley
If drive by it and blink, I'll miss it. The Sawmill Saloon is small bar in the northwoods. They also serve breakfast at 7am if you didn't go home! Mooselips Java Joint would a good place for coffee, if you didn't go home! Man, what would your mother say?

Precautions

In Wisconsin We say, “ If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes!” We had great weather for last year's gathering than we could hoped for. Just be prepared for what Wisconsin weather can bring, especially when camping.

Temps for Cable in May http://www.weather.com/weather/climatology/daily/USWI0108?climoMonth=5
Temps for Hayward in May http://www.weather.com/weather/climatology/daily/USWI0310?climoMonth=5

Please use caution driving in Northern Wisconsin at night. Deer are all over the place like grass on a lawn! Last year, We counted 20 plus deer in two miles after some night wheeling. Reducing speed at night is a must and extra lights are helpful.

Black Bears can be found here. In fact, the worlds record for the largest Black Bear killed was in Glidden, Wisconsin. We have never seen or had a black bear come into our camp on our trips. When camping do not store food in your tent. Rather hoist it in a tree branch with a rope. Another thing is make sure you clean up well after cooking, so there is no remains of food or smell in your camp or on you. Also, If you have to come across a mother and cubs this is not a photo op! Any bear mothering her cubs is the worst situation you could be in. Strange noises to them will help keep them away from you and your camp. Just as a precaution, be aware of your surroundings in the forest.

Xtra Xterra Equipment

A stock X can easily do 99% of trails. Here is a list of things at a bare mininium traveling offroad there. Also below is a optional list.

Should have List
- Full tank of gas before heading out
- FRS Radio ( channel 10 )
- A good tow strap
- A cooler for drinks and lunch - Micky Ds and Subway is a bit of a distance away.

Optional things

- Remove the stock steprails and mudflaps - Better safe than sorry!
- Tools that you think you may need

Thanks for the info [Wave] If some of the members "freak" we can rename it.

LOL, thats what happened to me... it was easier to rename it.

Re: Midwest Xterra Gathering Info - 15/11/03 12:58 PM

Why would anyone pitch a fit over using GOX in another X gathering? Does Ian have GOX copyrighted or patented? Jeep Jamborees(sp?) are all called the same thing, why can't a Gathering of Xterras be called the same thing? Just seems kind of silly to me... confused
Posted by: bn300

Re: Midwest Xterra Gathering Info - 15/11/03 05:29 PM

If you haven't heard from Mr. Firth yet, I would guess he just doesn't care.
But can we change the name to GONE? Gathering Of Nissan Enthusiasts(sp?)
That way I (who likes Nissans) can show up and not feel bad about wheeling with you guys.
[Wave]
Posted by: Excelagator

Re: Midwest Xterra Gathering Info - 16/11/03 12:01 AM

I could see if it was just GOX, but Midwest GOX is another. I could also see if we were charging for this, but we are not. If they freak, we can change the name to:

"GONE Northwoods"
"The Reckoning of Xterras" - ROX or TROX

BN300 I don't see a problem with you coming, no matter what the name is. I also don't see a problem a few coming that do not have an X. We regularly wheel with Jeeps, a Trick Liberty, and Tacomas.

BTW, If anyone uses ROX or TROX for an Xterra event. They owe me $5 per head per event all payable in small bills! cool
Posted by: XOC

Re: Midwest Xterra Gathering Info - 16/11/03 01:43 AM

If you want to make a GONE event, I would recommend contacting Steve Kramer at CALMINI.

I didn't have an issue with GOX West originally, and even made graphics for it, but after more thought it seemed better that it be renamed.

Jeep Jamborees are all named the same because they are hosted by Jeep. GOX is GOX because I host it. GONE is GONE because CALMINI hosts it.

You may want to consider an original name though, so as not to confuse people. Maybe Great Lakes Xterra Gathering or something, because the event is really a long way from the mid-West.
Posted by: bn300

Re: Midwest Xterra Gathering Info - 16/11/03 09:16 AM

True that. In the end, all any of us want to do is go wheeling, meet people, and maybe have a beer.
Forget about the name thing, just tell me where to be and when.
I'll be there. Might even be able to drag along a white and a yellow X. [Uh Oh !]

Re: Midwest Xterra Gathering Info - 16/11/03 11:43 AM

OK so I am going to step up on my professional soap box. Here are my credentials... I have a BA in Geography and worked for Rand McNally in the Digital Cartography department for over 4 years so I think I can speak in certainty and say that Wisconsin is part of the Midwest. If it wasn't then we have to rename our club as well as the conventional understanding of what and where the Midwest is. Just check any dictionary...

As for the name, who cares, I think since Dan and Chris are putting this together they get to name it. Just make it sound cool! cool

lol, funny but it was Ian who suggested it.

even made a logo for it.

it was "hardcore" purists that said "it spoils everything that is 'gox' to have it diluted into regional events"

------edited to add------

ok that'll teach me to read more of the thread before responding.

good luck guys

Re: Midwest Xterra Gathering Info - 16/11/03 09:56 PM

Ah righty then.. We will not use GOX or GONE since that might confuse some. We really can not use Great Lakes Gathering, that covers too much area east. We have the following names:

ROX Reckoning Of Xterras
TROX The Reckoning Of Xterras
GOMX Gathering Of Midwest Xterras
MWXG Midwest Xterras Gathering

Hey guys vote for one, or come up with one. I am up for it?

Re: Midwest Xterra Gathering Info - 18/11/03 07:12 AM

I like the last two. As for the acronymn, I like keeping it to 3 letters, so I would suggest making the last one MXG. Just my .02....
Posted by: Excelagator

Re: Midwest Xterra Gathering Info - 18/11/03 03:09 PM

Well it is changed to Midwest Xterra Gathering, MXG for short. I guess it was up to us to decide the name, Erik! I guess some of the MadcityXOC are [Sleep] . Maybe Mr. Ian could be so kind to give us our own forum for this gathering like the others??

Re: Midwest Xterra Gathering Info - 19/11/03 09:14 AM

I've planted several caches and I've found several as well. Its a hoot...

To PLANT a cache:
1. You need a good WEATHERPROOF container (no tupperware). We're talking about a 5 gallon bucket with a good screw down lid with an o-ring or gasket. Snow and Ice are very destructive to most containers.

2. You need "stuff" to put in the cache. My thinking is, the more remote and harder to find, the better the stuff inside the cache should be. Good things are: shot glasses, decks of cards, scratch tickets, starbucks gift cards worth 5-10 dollars, etc. Bad things include McDonald's happy meal toys, food of any kind (bears WILL rip apart a cache for potato chips), hard candy, candles (they melt), etc.

3. You'll need a spiral notebook and a pencil (complete with a small pencil sharpener) so people can log their visits. some folks put a disposable camera in there and ask visitors to snap a pic of themselves. A year later, its fun to develop the film and see who's been by.

4. Mark the spot with your GPS and log it into the Geocaching.com website! you'll get an e-mail anytime anyone visits the site.

To find caches, all you need to do is go to the Geocaching.com website and do a search of caches located within a 25 mile radius of the zip code you'll be staying in. Write down the locations, enter them into your GPS, and go hunting.

Hope that helps.

PNUT,
I will say that I will "cover your ass" on this.
The deal is...
you bring your X
You bring some of that sweet homemade brew
You actually get your X dirty
You bring venison
I got your lodging and spirits
I will NOT pre-fold the toilet paper.

With all due respect to your lovely wife, you can leave her at home to fluff sheets and wash windows.

Re: Midwest Xterra Gathering Info - 23/11/03 12:38 PM

Sorry I haven't posted in a while but I am in the middle of a position change and I am trying to learn a whole new set of software. I've got training out east several times in the next month and I am helping to cross train my replacement so I will be frequently AWOL until April.

That being said, Dan has done an excellent job putting this together and has done most of the leg work, I will take no credit for that. Without him this would not have come together until 2005. I think this will be a well organized, great trip and hope that we get people from more than just the "MIDWEST". By the way, I've always thought of myself as being in the midwest, but it seems people south of Illinois classify this region as "north-central".

Quote:
Mid·west (md-wst) or Middle West ; A region of the north-central United States around the Great Lakes and the upper Mississippi Valley. It is generally considered to include Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska. The area is known for its rich farmlands and highly industrialized centers.
As for names there may have been a question or two about a club named for a city, MADCityXOC. When I decided to start the club, Midwest was already taken although not practicing. There seemed to be no club in the Minnesota, UP, Wisconsin area, which is where I mainly travel so, I decided to name it after that region. There is already a Great Lakes 4x4 club, UPclub, so forth and so on, but not for Xterras mainly Jeeps. Madison is the capitol of the state, which is where I am based. It is also almost equal distance from most places, Twin Cities, Milwaukee, Chicago, Iowa, etc. So I thought this would be a good hub to wheel from. Unfortunatly most of the good wheeling is north of Eau Clarie and Wausau. In Madison, because of all the kooks, crooks, politicians, and shinanigans that revolve around politics in Wisconsin, Madison has recieved the nickname Madtown, hence many of the businesses have adopted the MadCity nickname as well. So there you have a history lesson on the name of our club.

After reading all the previous posts we probably should have named it, Northwoods Outing of Socially Entertaining Political In-Correctness, or NOSEPIC. Although, the Leine's people might be sending a lawyer on by if we use Northwoods. Oh well, I think someone anywhere might object to any particular word we happen to use. Midwest Xterra Gathering will work. Although I am allergic to MXG. [Spit] J/K

Re: Midwest Xterra Gathering Info - 23/11/03 09:18 PM

Sorry been out in the garage making saw dust. I never knew that Madison was called that for that reason, I thought it was for all the crazy college students experimenting with new things! eek Bn3oo, I will be staying at KOA. The wife and kids want running water. Thursday morning I will be ready to go do some wheeling.

Wheeling in the area I know of some known areas and they are not hard to find at all. Honest BN300, If you took a weekend every year and went wheeling there. It would take you quite a few years to do all the trails. A topo map of the area does is not up to date and does not show all the trails there. That is why Thursday I am going to explore some new trails.

Chris is the knowledgable one on the area. He has done the most scouting and wheeling in the area. I am going to leave the trails to wheel up to Chris.

say since i'm here maybe somebody can tell me something about my truck? we got it used from the nissan dealer in sag. in june or july i think. it's an 2001 yellow 4x4 se with the front windows tinted and a hawaii sticker on the top front air dam? or whatever it's called. it has a sunroof and trailer hitch. also has bush guards front and back and wind deflectors front and back. the mileage was a little on the high side but seems to have been taken care of real good and we haven't had a problem with her. anybody seen and/or know anything about this truck please get ahold of me. i think the previous owner lived in the muskegon area. later b.

Darkstar,
That time of year you should have a safe trip west. I can say, it would have to be a freaky snow storm, besides Wisconsin is pretty good on plowing there roads.

I know directions from Ironwood Mi. to Hayward. You should be on Hwy 2 from Ironwood, Mi. to Ashland, Wi. Go a little west of Ashland left on Hwy 63 to Hayward. The driving time from Ironwood to Hayward 2-1/2 hours

Aaaannnyway, check out my site on the home page. I have road conditions for all 50 states including the UP. They are updated comtinuously. Wisconsin is the best in my opinion. they show the roads at this moment.

Last year the weather was exceptionally beautiful. As always the last day Sunday produced the best trails. Some steep inclinces and what not on the mt. bike trails, yes you currently can drive them, although the ranger asked why we would WANT too. LOL

PS I just got back from Boston and boy are my arms tired. Missed the Noreaster by 12 hours. Didn't miss the shellfish food poisoning though. that's a fireside story. I will be back there early Jan.

I get back on the 16th of December! I can't wait man! I will be in Elkhorn and Lake Geneva. Probably living in Elkhorn. I can't even tell you guys how much I am looking forward to coming back. It has been 6 years since I left. I never have to miss another Packer game again and I can finally check out some of our trails.

Re: Midwest Xterra Gathering Info - 16/12/03 10:21 AM

I'm planning on coming... I'd like to stay at the Two Lakes Campground again if possible. Oh, I'll see what I can do about bringing some beer too. Any suggestions?

Matt

Edited to add: Maybe those beer suggestions should go in a new post... Like "things to share" or "the swill I'm going to pawn off on you guys" or "ideas for events and childish displays"... I'll think of something and start a new post (unless someone beat me to it already).

Re: Midwest Xterra Gathering Info - 16/12/03 10:38 AM

I would like to stay wherever the majority of folks are staying! No travel then if we are drinking! So just count me in wherever everyone else is staying. Oh I just need space for the truck, my camping chair, and a cooler, I am planning on crashing in the truck!

LOL [Spit] I thought you were talking about us on the last trip!!! I will say this, you guys are the best bunch of people I havent know personally but camped with, EVER! and thats not the beer talking. Although I do remeber a late night camp fire exstinguish one night, hey Matt. Holly still mad at us!!!! [Spit] J/K running joke. I would love to stay at two lakes again but the better half wants water so I think lenroot it is. Ther is also a bar across the parking lot from lenroot, AND it is half way between KOA and Two Lakes.

Matt, I thought the "swill" you pawned off on us was good. and if it's gone we get the good stuff right!!!!! Are we there yet, are we there yet??????????? I wish winter would pass already.

Well I'm still planning on bringing beer... Unless something REALLY, REALLY important comes up, I'll be there. Come on you guys, FREE BEER!

...And wheeling of course. laugh

Re: Midwest Xterra Gathering Info - 30/01/04 09:36 AM

Do we have a webpage for this yet? Do you have any sponsors involved. If we can try to attract some other people, even outside of the midwest, we can make this a big event. I am planning on being there. I might be moving up to Wausau for a job, so work might come into play...I don't think it will though.

Hey all,
I will be talking to a local dealer for door prizes, I'll try. I do have a Powerpoint program with pictures from last years run. If someone would like to post on a website or improve it. Just IM me and I'll send it. If some one would like to source a sponsor, I don't think anyone would mind.

I am going to start working on something for MXC, I should have it posted sometime next week.

Re: Midwest Xterra Gathering Info - 02/02/04 09:18 AM

Yes. Maybe another weekend. If we cannot get the support its better to postpone and get everyone involved then have a half-assed one. I'd like to set up a poll but am not a mediator. So e-mail, post, whatever you have to do but, check these dates and the most votes wins. I just checked other clubs, only one left in MIDWEST besides us and they have nothing scheduled.

OK. Here are the weekends we are choosing from.

1.) Second weekend in May 6th- 9th (original weekend)
2.) Third weekend in May 13th- 16th
3.) Fourth weekend in May 20th- 23rd.

I will not choose memorial day as that is usually family time. [Wave]

Re: Midwest Xterra Gathering Info - 08/03/04 10:53 AM

I just contacted the forest service. First by phone then by e-mail. The woman I spoke to said they are expecting the new plan at the end of this month sometime. This will decide what happens to the trails. I have also contacted them with regard to what happens if the plan is delayed, etc etc. It sounds like it is still up in the air. This plan was suppose to be in place by October 2003. Then December 31st. Now March 30th. So it may not be in place by the time we go. I have a contact into them and I am waiting for a reply.

Here is the link to the Forest Plan Site. It will be updated when the plan is delivered.

Most of the Madcity Crew will be there along will our fellow X-owners south of us. I think we have about 15 so far, That number I believe will climb over 20 easily.

I "think" Carlton is coming also?? I think if Carlton comes, some of the Twin Cities Crew will come also. Here is link to a forum that Lincolnellie and Max set-up. It has all the info on the event.

Here is the link to the MXG which has all the information you'll need. Your best bet is to just try and get directions to the town of Hayward Wisconsin. This is where most of us are staying.

There is also a forum dedicated to the MXG which you get to from the above link...
