Wisconsin Xers - 12/12/03 05:43 PM

Hi. Just curious to some of the places to go in WI. Any WI residents hanging around here. I live in Fond du Lac now, but will be moving back to Madison in Jan or Feb of 04. Just looking for places close or near by. The La Crosse area is the only place I have really been "off road". Thanks for any insight! smile

There is an area north of you, Goodman area. There is two Xers near you, Brandon and Jesse. Both are great guys and pretty knowledgable on the area near you.
Moving to Madison.... you have Black River Forest near there. IMHO the best trails are north Chequemegon, Nicolet,. By the way, have you checked out MadcityXOC , We plan a few wheeling and camping trips a year.
Hope this helps, Dan

It's probably pretty muddy right now. Hey Dan, since you are into welding I have an idea for a cheap trailer hitch mounted winch. about 60.00 bucks total. I don't weld thought. I need a stron steel plate welded to a hitch to I can attach one of these, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=43998&item=2447738787 . [Too much XOC] not sure it will work, but if we use a snatch block, it would double the rolling weight to 12,000 lbs and maybe good for that BRSF mud.

That sounds very doable and a great idea too! I would use 1/4 wall tubing and maybe 5/16 flat stock with some ribbing or angle iron. I know it will be heavy. Do you want a handle on one side so you can carry it easily? The snatch block could be attached to the tree with a tree strap. The cable could be anchored to the winch mount too.

no handle some of them have a handle. it does need clearance for the emergency crank on the side. Looks like it just bolts through the bottom. bolts would be the weak point. Crap for 60.00 bucks it's worth a try. I just can't afford a 600.00 winch.

One thing about those winches is do not use the ball as a anchor point. I read several articles about using the ball and it flying off. I did find this WINCH

Thanks. We try to catch the Mich-Tech game in the UP. When they play there in houghton, it is a bitter rivalry. Lots of fun. We had half season tickets last year! unfortunatly there is no drinking in the Kohl center so you have to make "arraignments". [LOL]

I'm getting moved to Madison by the end of this month / mid Feb. Where are the trails around FDL? I have seen a few fields I've been thinking of turning into trails! ha
