Fat Tire Run (Aug 1st - 3rd)

Just wanted to post up some info. on the Fat Tire run. The actual run is on Saturday (Aug 2), and we will camp near Flagstaff on Friday (Aug 1). On Saturday, (Aug 2) we will be camping at the finish line (near the Grand Canyon).

Oh boy, I'm finally here for once and get to go, 1st time in almost 4 years in the club.

I'm right there with ya, 1st time in 3 Fat Tires I will make it. I'm psyched.

Seems like I will make it as well.

The Meany will make its appearance, cage and all.

Trying to persuade the wifey to let me bring the 4Runner, but she loves Fat Tire too and does not love the 4Runner, so maybe the X will make an appearance.

Yes, it runs but it is in my sister's name and the plates aren't current. Hopefully, by Dec., I will have it my name and street legal. Sure wish I could go.

Do we donate at Fat Tire or anytime beforehand?

You can do what we always do, donate thru buying raffle tickets, shirts, etc..., at the event. I am going to try and get a few donations from friends and family, so I had them send me donation receipts to give oput for tax purposes to those that donate to the charity.
If you are interested in doing the same, I can email the file to you.

In the past, we've met at the Chevron on Carefree Hwy around 3-ish. I just want to get up there with enough daylight to get the tent set up. I'm off on Friday so I'm up for leaving even earlier if anybody else is game.

It looks as though I will be in town for Fat Tire, so if it's cool I plan on rolling out there with ONIX.

For anyone camping down at the start, look for a different camp for us.

We are too loud for the sleeping riders.

I'm going to go set up on top Friday.

I'll need a truck that can carry signs to sweep the course and that person will have to drive all the way to the start if they camp up top...

I am leaving Friday and I can leave at anytime. Pluvo if you can leave anytime I say we head up earlier and be a scouting party.

We can be at the Chevron by 1:30pm on Friday at the earliest; 2:00pm at the latest.

We'd be leaving from the Bass Pro Shop area in West Mesa around 12:45pm.

I might not get there until 8:00 pm or so on Friday night, so I will be camping near the starting line. There are a bunch of places to camp just a mile or so farther in than where we were last year.

I'm off at 1:15 fridays. If I go right from work, I can be at the Chevron by 2pm easy. I'd kinda' like to go pick up Shoki as this may be his last Fat Tire..

Hey guys I'm running into a few problems at work, is it possible for me to meet up Sat morning and head back right after the race ?

It is Harry, but honestly, that's a lot of gas to make a run up the hill and back.. Half the fun's camping w/ the crew Sat night.. just sayin'.

I'll probably be up there waiting for you guys. Gonna try real hard to leave from work around noonish. I'll be slow up the hill and will probably run up Oak Creek Canyon on the way just for the heck of it.

Bren and I are heading up Friday, but I do not know what time yet. Depends on if she has to work in the morning.

Can't make this one. I'm exploring the possibility of returning to police work and have a test that weekend. Have fun gettin muddy!

Four pages in and now, I have to say, I'm in for sure.

I just ordered 2 - 10" and 1 - 16" fans to replace the stock ones. I'm planning on using a mechanical temperature switch for the time being for the engine control and have the two condensor fans for cooling the bulk of the time, that is when the A/C is on. They'll be running off a relay from mcmaster.

Don't care for mud anymore, but should be fun as hell.

Wanted to bring the 4Runner, but might bring the X, although if I do go it'll be me and the 5 year old. Wife works Sundays so I'll have to bring the kid. Anyone else bringing kids along? Adam / Dan / Pluvo?

DR - are you camping at the start or finish?

No kids for me Rog. I'll either be by myself or with a friend again this year.

Bit apprehensive about bringing the kid along without wife. Kid can be a royal pain in the ass sometimes, but if she has Cassie to play with I imagine it'll keep her busy.

I don't work on Fridays, so I'll be heading up early that morning, fight a little rush hour and probably visit a friend for a couple of hours in Flag.

Desert Rat, can you give me directions to the camp? I'll be up there well before the rest of the group and want to set up after lunch.

I wouldn't mind knowing where the Friday night camp will be either. Friday work is a sure thing until after 5, but there's a good chance I can skip Saturday work if you don't mind another X for the weekend.

Both camps are in the same place as all the last years.

Except if you are camping Friday at the first spot we will camp some distance off.

There will be a clearly marked area for us at both camps.

Let me get the exact locations posted up for you guys.

In the meantime decide if you are camping both nights up top or in both spots...

Wife booked the Sunday off so she'll be with us and we'll be heading up Friday. Will probably head straight up to End Camp if you need anyone up at SAG 3 to help out there?

we are bringing both the X and Fronty, so we will be at start fri night and sleep in the fronty like last year.

Keep in mind that this is an event that stone (Marchal) invites AZXC along every year to help out with. It is not an AZXC sponsored event, kinda like the Desert Triathalon only Fat Tire is for charity.

Having not been myself, most veterans will say that the riders are usually appreciative that we are there to help out. Plus, we get to eat and drink afterwards.

It's gonna be a kick a$$ time. I can't believe I;m actually gonna make it this year!

No worries. You know that I had to call you out because I've been busted a few times for not reading the beginning of the thread.

I'd prefer camping up top to avoid having to set up twice.

The other advamtage is not having to worry about disturbing the riders before the big ride.

I agree with Pluvo about camping up top so not having to move. For all you experienced Fat Tirers is there a reason not to do this?

Only one I can think of: You have to be at the start (where the first camp is) very early in the AM (7am) if I remember right. I don't know if I would trust people with my stuff, if I'm not there either.

I'll be at start camp again this year, but don't have a time in mind as of yet, depends on when I can get away from work, etc. I'd prefer to caravan, if I still have any issues mechanically, but that doesn't look feasible right now.

Yeaa - it's a good 1h15min+ drive from the Top camp to the Bottom. So for a 7am start that means leaving early from Top camp. 65 miles across country (Direct Route) but by road it's a little further.

With the possibility of copius amounts of MUD this year, I'd say your time is conservative.

Last year, Dan's nephew stayed at the end camp to guard everyone's stuff. As for myself, I won't get up to Flagstaff until 8:00 PM or so on Friday. With this in mind, I'll be camping at the start camp. If you camp at end camp on Friday, you'll have a lot of driving to do early Saturday morning because we all have to meet at the start before the run, so Marchall can assign our staging points.

I for one plan to camp at start camp, and wheel all the course. I'm good to go for whatever I'm needed to do .

after some careful consideration, I'm gonna camp at the start Friday, then at the finish Saturday...mainly to avoid driving an extra 130+ miles.
