After a few minor purchases (fuel cell) and maybe 40-50 hours of wrenching, it'll be muy trail ready. I still can't believe it's not butter!

Awesome. The running gear look in amazing shape.

Everything has been torn down and refurbished by the kid, he's a paid wrench. Notice the powdercoated parts, there're a lot of them. The hubs turn free and there doesn't seem to be any noticeable problems yet. It's even marked my otherwise pristine garage floor in it's first 24 hours at home

Assuming you have the dual tanks in the fender wells? I currently have 3 tanks and may be able to trade one I'm not using for a qty of beers.

The tanks are out, I have them though. I believe I'll be going with a fuel cell however and eventually a swing away tire or even roof mount for the spare.

I thought the truck was a bit steadfast as I tried to roll it myself, even for having one semiflat tire. I got in and moved the twin sticks, out of low, then I unlocked the hubs out on the wheels. It rolled a little quicker.


Staying true to the original format, NO, there's no A/C either. :p

Right now there're 6 OE 6X16 wheels (4 powdercoated blue) wearing 28 inch tires.

I'm thinking of going SOA and rockin' some fodeez. Yeah baby, can you say "R-tick, you late?"

So I don't turn this into a "Scout" forum, I'll just add my crap here.

Just got a new bumper from a guy who was at the Alameda Naval Station in the Bay Area (old Sticker left on it).

Anyway, got the old one off and the new freshly sanded/painted one on. Old one is going on the back since there's nothing there. It looks pretty beefy, but the mounting points are not much better than a stock xterra bumper for "tugging" purposes. If/when I add my M8000 I'll need some sort of custom mount so no one is killed. As for now, any "extractions" will be done using points on the frame.

Ya' know, honestly nothing. I really want to get gears for the X first, and a snorkle so I feel like I finished what I set out to do originally. Than, the Scout's pretty much good to go. I'll have to bolt down the body pieces with all new hardware, plumb the fuel tanks, run the electrical, replace front window, and maybe get a new exhaust. It's a fairly short list, now. I'm sure I'm forgetting somethings. (SL, 40z, 302 w/ fuel inj, 6 pt rollcage and sparco seats with harnesses.. I'm sure there's more too )

PS John, your junk's looking pretty darned good. Does the '64 have the flop down window? I see the wiper gears up top there.. That's another thing I can get done when I start, mine are in a box in the truck. And a new steering wheel too.. Did you put those shackles on up front? How big are they?

Also, If you're working out here, (like anyone'd build any homes out here for sale :rolleyes: ) Call or come by and check it out.

I found a pair of leather seats from an 80's Integra for $50 on eBay yesterday. Need to go pick 'em up. I'll be driving a POS in STYLE!!

Let me know if you plan on any wrenching sessions on it soon (not too soon though - wife is being induced tomorrow for kid #2 ). Wouldn't mind lending a hand if I'm able to.

Edit to answer your edit: Yes, my window folds down and attaches to that "u-bolt" on the hood. Any faster than 20 mph and it's too much wind in the face. It's pretty cool!

and one more edit: Yeah, the shackles are 2" lift shackes from southwest4x4.net. I think they're a bit too long (they'll catch on obstacles - if I ever go over any!), but for now they'll do...

Back to topic, when's this Scout going on the trails???

Congrats Conundrum! I now recall something along the lines of "Terra". My wife liked the name "Tara", but she actually thought "Terra" would be cool since it's different.

Back to the Scout stuff. I ordered wheels yesterday from Discount Tire - black rockcrawlers. I'll actually have all the same sized tires as well as a spare (special thanks to Mike and Travis. )

I have one more spring bushing to replace (total pain in the ass), then I may see if I can find dirt to try it out.

I did take it across the way to the school parking lot and in low range, 2wd it climbed (angled) over a curb w/o my foot on the gas. It was sweet - almost brought a tear to my eye.

I only have one fuel tank hooked up and it's only 8 or 9 gallons (I think?). So the 5 gal can will always be with me in the back.

Then I really should dive into the fluids...I have leaks all over. It's only a real problem when it stops leaking.

I only need to run the fuel lines, and do basic electric to turn it over . Than, I should probably bolt together the body . Of course I've got 4 matching wheels for it, powdercoated blue.. It might coulda' should get some new rubber too, what the heck? Right? Than take it to the shop and get it on the rack, get the fluids swapped and check out the undercarriage I'd like to throw on a 6 point cage too as the doors will stay off and be replaced by cool tubes w/ cargo webbing (think raingler..) Seats, harnesses, and a cupholder, and I should be good to go

So, does that mean 2 days, weeks, months, years, or decades?

Well, it's supposed to be a project for my nephew and I to share. He wants to help and it'll make my dad happy too. There's a list of things needing to be bought and also to be done. They're prioritized although I'm in no position at this time to attack the list head-on. I just finally got my garage cleaned up enough to get both trucks in last weekend. Now I've gotta' have a garage sale and sell what's left to make room for wrenchin'. Feel free to stop by anytime..

Update on my junk: New wheels and tires are on! (camera is broken still... :rolleyes: ) My passenger leather seat is almost done being mounted (fabbing some brackets...) and something showed up from Texas over the weekend - a Dana 30 & a 44 both already SOA'd with 3.73's. Just need brake shoes, a fuel line piece, and a drag link - and it will actually bolt right on.

Give me a month and it'll be done and on the road. Well, it's on the road now, but I'll need a weekend day to complete the swap.

(I think you have the 4-cyl "196" though.)

It'll fit in the garage - it has to. The HOA will wonder what the hell is in my driveway if I don't. (Though I'm a board officer, so maybe I'll cut myself some slack if it's outside a night or two. )

Then, cover it with some type of ballistic webbing skin, think RAINGLER nets.. 33's may be the biggest option for these engines afterall..Get your s running soon, by say the 6-9th...

I drove it about 20 minutes within a 2 mile radius of my house (read "walking distance") the other night. So it is roadworthy now. I do need to go through all the fluids before going much further than that. My wife still won't get in it yet though.

Yep - both D27's currently. The SOAs in the garage are a D30 and a D44. Can't wait to get those under it!

SOA huh? Are you keeping the 152, or have you got something else in mind ? I've decided to go shackles and BL for now.. My underside's just too pretty to start tearing up yet . Once it's good and worn in, I'll go SOA, and perhaps new engine, but for now, I'm being told the 152 with my gears and 33's will be quite useable ( and durable) I've seen the SKYJACKER and RANCHO SOA kits, using either of those? Oh, and where'd you get your shackles?

Dan - yeah, it's a 152 - I don't plan on swapping that out any time soon. With that, on 33's and 3.73 gears I figure it'll do well on the road and might be a little high for super-slow offroading but it'll do me for now.

The SOA axles came straight out of a Scout 800. Previous owner moved the perches to the top, bought a Gryphin Racing Tierod and drag link. (my draglink just needs to be shortened at a machine shop - and maybe my pitman armed tapered a bit).

I got my shackles from http://southwest4x4.net/. If I do my swap before you make any changes you could buy mine and save a little (if I go back to the stock shackles, of course.)

Not sure where this one is (It's listed in the Phx section), but it's running and driving. Probably cheap!
With a little work (or no work) it might be a good one!

I was thinking of meeting another oldie but goody for some light wheeling/ exploring.

A friend has an old FJ55 or what is known as a "Pig" and I was thinking of meeting him at Bloody Basin because he knows of ruins/ ghost towns in the area.

Our trucks would fit in with all of that old stuff!

Next year - Next year for sure I'll invest some of my new found wealth in a Scout. I'll make it my new years resolution. Then it can sit in the granmother in laws garage / workshop for a few months for me to tinker with.

I'm going to invest in a welder and a few welding classes, so will be looking to an insanely cheap rust eaten one that runs, then I can weld new bodywork onto the thing, or do a little fabrication of my own. Always wanted to learn how to Weld.

If I ever get around to getting it fixed up, I could bring out my '66 Patrol.. Ford 302 powered, c6 w/ NP205, Dana 44 and Ford 9" w/ lockrite. SOA & sitting on 36" swampers. booyah!

Datz510 - nice looking truck. I was looking at one in Prescott about a year ago. $300 but it needed just about everything but the frame and body... I love those things, but unless you find one (or build one) with more common parts, they're a little over my head.

I'd love to bring it out this weekend, but I'll be lucky if it's done by mid-January... That and I'm headed to Tucson tomorrow for the half-marathon. I gotta train for this crap once in a while!

That patrol induces swelling in my nether region..And I like it.

I know visually it doesn't look like I've done much since the last update, but I got the u-joints and driveshaft back in, made u-bolt plates, new extended brake line in, bled the brakes, and put the thing back together. Just need figure out the shock mounting thing. There's two tabs already there, but I'm gonna have some long-a$$ shocks if I use those (which could be a good thing - articulation won't be limited as much).

Then it's on to the front...that's gonna be harder. Need to shorten the drag link, and mate it to the pitman arm... I won't be doing that work.

EDIT: So I needed to turn the turd around so I can work on the front.... Took it around the block with the ass end sky-high. Looked pretty funny (and got a couple looks from the neighbors), but nothing blew up at 25mph for a couple minutes - so far so good. Now the front is up on jack stands and I'll starting ripping it apart after xmas.

The progress (fortunately) continues (always way too late at night though...). Got the front out and swapped all the brake lines to the new axle.

It looks great dude. I just had a conversation w/ myself recently and decided to re-fi the house and pay off some stuff. I'm looking to put gears and a winch on the X. That'll pretty much finish that . Then I'm gonna' kick down some change to the SCOUT . 4" lift, 33 MTs, rollcage, seats, and seatbelts.. Of course I'll need a car for a DD at that point, maybe an early Z-car?..

I know that I haven't met any of you guys yet. I have had the X since May and have done my PML(new Calmini torsions/shackles), Shrock bumper, front, eng/trans skid, teh skids that I bought off of Mike that I need to modify a bit, other minor mods, and Bils on the way, just need to go out with you guys and wheel it. 17 month old and a soon to arrive new baby is the only thing limiting me right now.

If I keep seeing this movement to get the old stock out and running, I'll have to finish up my 73 Bronco. It has a Protofab 3.5" long travel suspension, dual 9000's per corner, 302, C4, 44 front/limited slip, 9" rear/detroit, custom tube bumpers, 9000# winch.

I need to finish up my brakes (disc conversion on the 44), drop a motor back in, put the fresh tranny/tranfer case back in and go!

I do have access to a bender/dies, and a mig welder. My brother and I own the setup. He does more bending than me.

I'll try to make the next meeting, but the baby thing is the x factor right now.

My good buddy has one too - about 3 different colors, lifted, locked and beat to hell. He says "Sliders? Why? I use my rockers as sliders."

This may look like a lot of progress but lots more to do - but the axle is under the truck. Finally.

Now I only need....new ujoints for the front DS, extend the DS about 2", brake line mounts/tabs welded in, shock mounts on the axle, shocks (F & R), soft brake line from the axle up to the master cylinder "area", shorten the drag link, taper the pitman arm, put the MTRs on, etc, etc, etc.... But hey, I'm gettin' there.

As it sits, it's at ride height (add another 1.5" for the 33's when installed too). Even though the front axle is on jackstands, the tires are maybe a quarter inch off the floor. The weight of the truck is on the axle. This thing is gonna be TALL.

I met a guy today as well that might be able to make me a full cage too. I don't trust the factory "show bar"...

No digital pics and all of my old pics are away somewhere. Right now it is sitting under tarps at a friends house, my association would be all over me if I had it here.

Mine is the Grabber Blue color with a white accent along the bottom. The hood is the only part that is primered since I had the hood louvered.

To get it going I'm probably going to replace all of my brakelines hopefully after taxes. Only about $175 and some time!

By the way, I enjoy watching the progress on the scout. Keep it up.

Time for another update! It drives (and stops)!

Well, the solid axle/spring over swap is nearly finished (replaced my SUA 27's with a sprung over 30 & 44 w/ 3.73's). Woohoo.

Bent, hooked up, and bled the new brake line(s), made sure every nut and bolt was nice and snug and proceeded to back her outa the garage very very gingerly hoping to be able to avoid the neighbors house in case of disaster.

Went about a mile or so around my house (in case of need to walk) and everything seemed to be pretty good. Definite bump steer though going 30 mph and hitting some cross-drainage dips in the road (2" shackes are coming off ASAP), but overall I'm pretty happy with it. Front DS needs to go on still and reassess the shocks front and back, but hey, it goes (and stops!)!

Sorry...I know the pics are dark, but that's what happens when you only work on it at night.

Those are 30" BFG's on 15x8 wheels. The used 33" MTRs are in the garage. If they work, great, if not, I'll do something different

Here's a couple new pics too (in the daylight!). I actually drove mine from FLW & 100th St area to downtown Tempe. I won't attempt the freeway yet with no front shocks, but it did well. Only broke the speedo on the way over. Still workin' on the damn front driveshaft...ujoints too tight for my liking so I'm MacGyvering them somehow.

I bought this thing in March last year... the goal was to have it SOA'd and driving well w/in one year. Guess I'd better finish it up!

Okay...Nissan related. After getting rear-ended on the fwy on Saturday, I worked it out w/ the guy to pay me cash for half of the highly-inflated estimate for repairs. I still came in under budget and replaced all damaged parts in 1 hr.

Time for another update. (...keeps my momentum going. )

Got my 33" MTRs on it tonight and put new brake shoes on the front. (Sorry, as usual, when I finish something there's no daylight shots...)

Still need to work on tightening an oil filter adapter...it's not ready to drive more than a couple minutes with that issue...



Yes, that's kitty litter under it...soaking up the oil from the big ol canister that leaks everywhere and then practially blows up when you try to remove it... It's gone now.

I love it, I keep telling myself - Next year I'll get one of those! Looking awesome dude.

I think I've got a grand total of about $1,750 or so total into mine - and I bought new axles, wheels, custom steering, interior, etc, etc. Would've been easier to buy something else already built, but that's not as much fun. I like to drive a "self-inflicted/created crap heap."

Uhh...over the weekend...Uhh...I literally ran 20 miles Sunday morning, so I did computer work the rest of the day.

I did just finish adjusting my brakes too, then loosening the motor mount to be able to tighten the oil filter adapter. Yeah, you know the one. Now I need to address the 7 other leaks.

Seriously, get that thing driving soon! Would love to hit some unpaved roads and see how these old things do.

Thanks Roger. All the muscles in my hands are killin' me now. Six screws took nearly two hours to remove...hammer...impact screwdriver...hammer...more hammer...some PB Blaster... swearing, sweating, swearing, OUT!

I bought a new ebrake cable too. I might be able to actually park on something with more of a 1/2 degree angle.

Looks good man where did you get the tires? It is time for me to hit the trail again too. I can finally park in the drive way w/o dripping all over.

Found 3 on craigslist.org, and found two more from a guy who's house I listed. Funny story, I had posted a msg saying I'm looking for something in a 33" that holds air for a "project truck" and when I went to pick 'em he saw the RE/MAX sticker on my Armada and said "you're a Realtor?" "Wanna sell my house?" BTW, the tires were free (kinda chunked up, but free )

I finally got a parking brake cable too (still need to install it....). My previous parking brake was a 18" long piece of 4x4 (pressure treated, of course.)

I've done a little more on mine. Put on a tube tailgate along w/ the tube doors.

I bought a full 6 pt roll cage as well. Needs slight modification, but I paid only $25.00. Yep - $25

Fixed a couple more leaks - one big one left that I might be able to tackle this week. Then maybe put the new carb on?...maybe?....

Thanks. I spent two hours coating myself with oil yesterday. (Changed the oil pan gasket.) The "oil river" is now a super-duper slow trickle.

Now if I can just get the new carb on and get it so it won't stall at every stoplight, I'll be in business.

There IS a Santa Claus. I FINALLY got the Scout off the pavement for more than 50 yards. Though this run wasn't real challening I ended up doing the whole thing in 2wd after not realizing my hubs were having probs engaging. I did need the strap on one 30 ft section, but the rest the ol turd just scooted along. What a hoot!

Went with the Sonora Desert Scouts to Tip Top Mine up the west side of hwy 17 at the Table Mesa exit.
