NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 01/11/06 02:32 PM

Not to overshadow this weekends festivities, but...

Hey all, my buddy from Cali is coming out here for the Cardinals-Cowboys game on the 12th. I plan on taking him out on a little Xcursion Friday the 10th or Saturday the 11th. Anyone that wants to go would be more than welcome to join in the fun.

Looking at Crown King, BA (if we don't run it this weekend), or Edwards Park Trail, or...??? I am open to anything, I just wanna take him out for a little off-roadn'

I know you got the weekend off defibvt... [Wave]

EDITED TO CHANGE SUBJECT TITLE smile

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 06/11/06 04:32 PM

Let's get some plans going for this coming weekend so everyone is not left in the dark come Friday.

I say let's run BA, Soldier Pass, etc;...I think Dan suggested that in another thread. But there mya be alot of pinkies which is no bueno.

My second choice would be the Florence area. No pinkies and harder trails, which is muy bueno.

Leave Saturday around 10:00am I am guessing?

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 06/11/06 04:43 PM

I should be at the meeting Friday but I can't do any more crazy stuff/runs until fricking Calmini gets me my steering system. My front end is so hosed right now...I'm just hoping it doesn't blow up before they get their act together.

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 06/11/06 04:51 PM

I'd be up for coming on the excursion, don't want to put my rig through anything to hardcore tho until I get a little more armor.

Sounds like you guys might be heading somewhere a little tougher than my limited experience is good for.

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 06/11/06 05:27 PM

I don't think Broken Arrow or Soldier Pass would be considered Hardcore.

You shouldn't have a problem. There are always detours around hard points anyway.

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 06/11/06 05:42 PM

ohhhh - Thought this was gonna be a Hardcore run. Been wanting to run Broken Arrow for a while.

I'm easy, just want to do something.

Gotta test out my 'new' rig. [ThumbsUp]

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 06/11/06 07:47 PM

Let's do BA, etc. but meet at the Chevron by 8:00 instead. I have my Niece's Birthday Party at 2:00 or so, they still haven't decided yet.

Broken Arrow will be cake for Rog and Tom, Mark can run albeit conservatively and hope a couple others can make it.

If we get done early we can go through Jerome on the way back and stop for a Sud and sandwich at that little brewery there. [drink]

I'm down (or is it up confused ) for BA, etc this saturday. Sedona's always cool, although Payette Draw in Payson is great too. I'll drive either one [ThumbsUp] .

Cool! Coming back thru Jerome gives me an excuse to hit Prescott on the way home.

Adam, you really think we'll be back in town by 2:00? I'd be happy making it to Precott by then.

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 07/11/06 10:40 AM

I'm down if there is an easier ways past the hard core stuff, because I'm pretty new at this off roading thing and I'm in a stock 2006 and don't want to bang it up to much yet. Can someone give me directions or an address to where we are meeting.

Thanks

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 07/11/06 11:11 AM

We will meet up at the Chevron gas station located at I-17 and Carefree Hwy at 8:00am.

We will all help you learn to negotiate whatever obstacle you want. If there is a will there is a way. Just come on out, I guartantee you will have a great time with a good group of folks.

The best way to learn to off-road is to do it. Kinda like sex...hmmmmm...sex and off-roading...both fun and rough at times!

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 07/11/06 11:34 AM

Personally, i'd rather do Payette Draw. Its new territory and it meets the criteria of a more hardcore trail for this months excursion on the east side.

Nothing against sedona, but it seems that we do that trail multiple times a year, and should use this opportunity for an xcursion to do something that... well .. isn't sedona :p

There will be those who don't meet the minimum requirements of the trail, may want to put together a side trip.

Speaking of minimum Requirements, Dbax, what are they?

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 07/11/06 12:34 PM

From what I have heard of Payette Draw, isn't there bypasses around most of the difficult stuff anyway? Or am I thinking of another trail. Is that the one that Dan hit with the Jeeps & Swanky?

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 07/11/06 01:06 PM

I'm down for wherever. Just need to know the meeting place and time. I cannot make the Club meeting on Friday as I have to work so I can go Saturday.

Place, Time, meet up spot?

After looking at Payette...I am voting YES. It would be a better trail to run when there is a group that can help with tricky spots. Sedona is easy cheesy.

Minimum req's for Payette?

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 07/11/06 01:07 PM

PAYETTE, PAYETTE, PAYETTE...

C'mon guys let's do it!

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 07/11/06 01:23 PM

I'm up for it as long as we're not scaring off anyone and I can stick to my timeframe of being on the way back by 2 pm.

I'd assume that those with Mudflaps and or steprails need to remove them for Payette?

I'm up for Payette Draw, but will my STOCK 06 handle it or should I venture up to Sedona?

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 07/11/06 02:22 PM

Just in from work and I'm happy to see so many willing to kick it up a notch. Payette draw can be done IFS, and no traction aids(lockers/gears) are necessary. There are some off camber spots and some gnarly rock gardens. The shelves can split you rtires in two also. But, it's a beautiful trail and a good challenge for most anyone. As Adam noted, mudflaps and steprails should be removed, but no suspension or body lifts are even necessary otherwise. Careful attention will be given to drivers w/o proper armor, but operator skill will play the biggest part in keeping damage free here. We'll of course only run the lower half of the trail, upper is much shorter but impassable to us all. Bring liquids and plan to lunch somewhere in the pines, it should be a great day [ThumbsUp] .
Oh, bring spares if you have 'em too; TREs, hubs, ratchet straps, tools, etc. jic..

The Chevron's on the Carefree Hwy E of I-17 on the N side, you won't be able to miss it. Have an FRS radio (or two) set too channel 14.0 . If you have a CB, we usually run 17 (SWANKy Net).

Any thoughts on how to get there? Of course, leaving up I-17, the quickest way is north to Camp Verde, then the 260 E across and up to Payson. (We could from 260 also hit FR300 and ride that east across the Rim and back out to Payson, but I digress..) Oor, from the Chevron, Carefree Hwy east to 87, and N into town from there?
Either way let's be prepared to leave the McDonalds in Payson by 9:30. M'kay? smile

Here's a great video by Stu Olson (or his wife Cindy), from Payette Draw, on a Jeep run. The trip was sponsored by BFG tires as part of its "5 best trails in America" tour/promo. You'll see.. laugh CLICKYMELINKY

Ty, Scott, Travis, Tomas, Thomas? How 'bout it guys? Lets get everyone out for the end of the year?

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 07/11/06 03:32 PM

Little to hardcore for me I think, will wait until I get some armor on her before I hit the rocks that hard. Have fun folks.

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 07/11/06 03:47 PM

Sedona can be run with a stock Gen1 or Gen2 X. Sliders are good to have, but not necessary. You'll never need a skidplate there either, unless you're looking for a way to center yourself.. The other two trails; Soldier Pass Road, and Teacup Trail, are both scenic and fun too, but again, you wouldn't need skids for anything on the redrocks..

In Payette, sliders are mandatory, and skidplates'd prolly be helpful for harder lines, although not entirely necessary. MTs or BFG AT/kos are recommended for this trail too..

[Too much XOC]

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 07/11/06 03:59 PM

Since I don't have any armor either, I'm a little skittish about Payette. Lots of crunching going on in that vid.

Maybe we should have two runs. Payette for the hardcore folks & Sedona for the wussies like myself.

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 07/11/06 04:12 PM

Looks like we have a split decision. I would really like to have a big group for this run and get some good pictures and have a good Saturday Xcursion.

Wherever we go let's go as a club and represent. I trust the guys with more built trucks to help me through any tough spots. Plus, you never know what you are capable of unless you try.

Bottom line: let's get as many Xterra's together on Saturday as possible. If that means a more accomodating trail, so be it. Just my .02.

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 07/11/06 04:15 PM

It's not about being a wussie smile . Sedona is one specific type of terrain, perfect for offorading novices, and the scenery in the canyons around is world famous. The trail's great obviously  .. There was a whole industry built around it. And they're not so bad. Recent legislation has taken a bit of their bark..
Payette Draw more than armor, or any doo dads, just requires more driver skill I think. Keep in mind, those are built sheep and as such are taking optional harder lines. Not to mention that axle-thing up front.. I'll be happy to bring those interested up there soon (late NOV, early Dec), as perhaps more can run with us this weekend on the Sedona trails..

I second that Dan.

Just say the word and I will run Payette with ya.

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 07/11/06 04:20 PM

If those who've done it before think I can do it, then I'm willing to give it a go.

If not, I'd be happy to do Sedona so nobody has to go alone.

I'd like to see a large showing too quite honestly, I just don't want anybody to feel left out.

Sweet smile I’m in AZ this week laugh

Prescott 11/8, TF&J and I are heading to Payette Draw on Thursday.

After that we may hit Terminator and/or Raw Deal on Friday.

So where & when can I meet you folks near the Table Mesa Area on Saturday? I have some friends in Sedona I’d like to visit

If anybody is up for some midweek wheelin’ let us know and we can arrange some meets.

Sweet! Looks like we are gonna have a good group.

Xtoolbox:
I would say put you FRS or CB on 14 or 17 respectively and as we near Table Mesa Rd, jump in the convoy with us. If we leave the Chevron about 8:15 that puts us at Table Mesa about 8:35ish. Or we can all get off the freeway and wait for ya.

Or call me on your cell: 4802517976 and I can tell ya where we are.

What time do you think we would get back to town after running the trails up there? Traffic permitting of course. My brother in law might tag along, but he plays hockey on Saturday evenings so we would need to be back by 5'ish if he does.

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 08/11/06 11:31 PM

Hello there people.

Just joined the forum recently, new to the area as well and to the car. Was hoping to join you all this Saturday, but being an uber-noob in offroading (i don't think crossing creeks in VW Golf counts) I am wondering how difficult the chosen trails would be for someone like me? I got the '06 S with 4x4 absolutely stock.

Wouldn't want to find out my car's limitations the first time I am out and the hard way!

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 09/11/06 04:23 AM

You will be just fine to go on the run this weekend. We will meet at the Chevron located at I-17 and carefree hwy at 8:00am on Staurday.

Hope to see ya there. Your X is capable of a great amount of off-road situations. The only way to find out what YOU are capable of is to go wheelin'.

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 09/11/06 06:56 AM

I'm an offroad noob too and have been convinced that Sedona doesn't pose to much risk to me & my rig. Been looking forward to heading up there since I got the thing a year ago and now I finally will.

It did however cost me $135 for a pair of Red Velvet DM Boots << Boots Clicky >> in order to persuade the wife to let me go for the day. But that is a small price to pay for freedom! smile

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 09/11/06 09:19 AM

Too Funny Roger!

I'm sitting in McDonalds parking lot in Payson. Going to go check out the Payette Draw with Xtoolbox and TF&J. I guess we're only doing the easier part. I'll let you know how it is, but I won't have any Digital Pictures, Joannie has the Camera.

Noobs should remove the Steprails and Mudflaps to avoid damaging them. They are easy to remove and really you won't miss them that much. Take the rear swaybar off if you really want to be prepared, it'll let you take some better lines with better flex.

Hope to see you all Saturday. [Wave]

I can probably get the Mudflaps off, but Steprails might be a bit of a challenge in the dark frown Apparently there are downsides for 7ish to 6ish work sometimes. Any chance of survival if I keep the Steprails on?

EDIT: Well, to make myself feel like a total noob, I could not reach all the screws or figure out the freaking little nub to get the splash guards off! Doing it in the dark didn't quite help either.

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 09/11/06 06:11 PM

When I had my '03 I did the trails with mine on, but did hit one bending it a bit. You'll just have to take easy lines and be spotted on the more difficult ones.

BTW Payette is not for the unmodified (Stock) or intimidated. Very, Very rough on the stock skids, but I had fun. Thanks Xtoolbox and TF&J! I impressed them and some bystanders with the '05 capabilities. [ThumbsUp]

Re: NOV 11th SEDONA RUN - 10/11/06 10:25 AM

I ran Broken Arrow totally stock with rails and flaps a week after I bought mine. Always suggest taking the rails off just in case. Worst thing to happen to the flaps is that nature rips them off for you.... [Smoking]

I didn't try the shelves and got off the creek where the road crosses it. Terra was sound alseep on the Rocks and I didn't want to keep banging her around.

I did like it, but would feel much more comfortable with a lift and skids. Then again I would still find the crunch, bang and screeching unsettling.

I'll definately do it again someday.

BTW, no camera was due to Joannie having it on her trip to Montana. Xtoolbox took some and I think he said he'd post them.

Would love to - Shame they are like 5 sizes to small - Damn! smile

Well while we were on vacation my mother in law and her mother (Lindsays Gran) cleaned up our house. And now the box in which my Differential Skid was in is missing, after I get off work early today to install it. Grrrrrrrrrrr. Will be taking off the rear sway bar, but I guess I'll have to run without my diff armor.

Yeaa - me too. Been wanting to hit Sedona forever. Rear swaybar is off. With the way the X almost sits on the new Timbren bumpstops I put on, it doesn't need it anyway.

Decided on FIrestone Destination MT tires once the Daystar is on. Waldo who will be there tomorrow has them on his X I hear.

Would love the pics of me coming down the steps! Was having some trouble there getting the clutch out without stalling the X, so still need a little practise off road with the manual trans. My brother in law Scott who tagged along with me now wants a 4x4! lol.

This Scion was kinda cool. Caught me off-guard so the pics aren't so good.

Tried to get some shots of the whole convoy in the corners.

I'm gonna be in trouble soon!

I was farting around with my radio at the Chevron & didn't get names to go with the new faces. For those that don't know, I'm the fat guy with the rowdy kid.
