Oh stop it, you're not sorry. If you were really sorry, you'd make GOX a week long trip to different malls in the area. And maybe throw in a dirt road or two to really shake things up.

Re: Seems early but.....GOX IV? - 30/12/02 08:00 PM

After seeing GOX and the trails there in the Ouray area this year, the trails are just like rough fire road with a few small obstacles along the way. Not much else. A 4x2 could do quite a few of the trails in that area with some exception.

While driving down a few of them, I was waiting to see a mall around the bend. Heck, I saw a Lincoln Navigator out on the Alpine Loop. Even got a snapshot of it. Too funny.

Ouray trails... [Sleep] ... See you all on the Rubicon.

Re: Seems early but.....GOX IV? - 30/12/02 08:58 PM

I look forward to not seeing you and your shitty attitude next year.
Posted by: slackerx

Re: Seems early but.....GOX IV? - 30/12/02 09:17 PM

Nope, no shitty attitude here. Just wasn't impressed with the trails (technical aspect ONLY) at Ouray. Rather disappointed actually. The history and scenery was outstanding though.

It's a great place for folks that don't have a great deal of offroad experience to learn and interact with others. Good social climate. Being a veteran offroader, I just desire a little more challenge. Didn't mean to get your panties in a bunch there Ian. Take a Mydol Sparky.

Ouray was a neat little place. Silverton was a little more interesting and Telluride was kick arse. Would definitely go back to visit Silverton and Telluride for non-4x4 related reasons.

I won't be at GOX next year, too many other places across the country to visit. The calendar is too full already (with more technical locations).

Re: Seems early but.....GOX IV? - 30/12/02 09:41 PM

I'll make it more clear on the GOX website then laugh

GOX is not a hardcore 4 wheeling event, it's 1/3 wheeling, 1/3 scenery and 1/3 partying. Still, a 2WD at 13k feet with no low range will have a lot of trouble, and will cause a lot of dust and trail damage.

It's not all easy though, I recall at least a dozen broken Xterras on Poughkeepsie. Did you get up it unscathed ?
Posted by: slackerx

Re: Seems early but.....GOX IV? - 30/12/02 10:09 PM

We went through Poughkeepsie and the dreaded "Wall" without a problem. Completely unscathed. 1-2 re-positions at most and all were running open-diff.

A little more information about the trails on the website would be useful. smile

A 2wd w/o low range could easily do Alpine Loop, Cinnamon Pass, Minnie Gulch, Ophir Pass, Imogene Pass, and the Yankee Boy Basin (with possibly a little help). The others, a 4wd in high will suffice.

Is there any mounatin biking near where everyone camps/stays? I am trying to make a plan for labor day. Thanks -

Re: Seems early but.....GOX IV? - 31/12/02 07:09 AM

I doubt it. Several times I was in 4wheel high and barely made it up several hills. You would need 4wheel low to prevent trail damage. Sorry to hear you were unimpressed but I was very. Yeah not the hardest trails I have been on but like Ian said it's not about the trails. I would say 1/2 trails/scenery and 1/2 social gathering/party.

There is something about the San Juans that make me want to keep going back.. we made it the first 2 years but missed it in 02. We just may have to show up for the friends and good times for next event. Just pretend the Rover is an X with a birth defect laugh

Well.....I am truly gonna try and make it this year. I want to meet some of these XOC folks.

In advance....if anyone from the eastern part of the country wants to start thinking about a caravan, PM me or post here and we can start thinking about logistics. Also if anyone wants to start thinking about sharing accomodations, post it here as well, or PM me. I've seen the great photos and fun gatherings enough to finally convince me to make the trip.

Yep...I'll post over there. Thanks for the heads up. I'd love to start gathering some folks from back East. Could be a long lonely drive all bt my lonesome. The wife probably would not come. And I don't think the 8 month old baby would be too fond of the trip. (Not yet....but someday).

You guy's forgot that in addition to releasing the E-brake, to make sure that you also look to make sure that Ivan Locks his front hubs so that he is in 4WD unlike the first part of Hell's Revenge. laugh

VaderX did well even in 2WD. [Laughing]

i did like tawking and funnin with Xterra owners frum across the countrie. but, it wusn't enough to perswade me to come back. i did win sum cool stuff at the hamburger picnic and the smell of the hot springs remind me of home but i will not be coming back to Colorado. it wusn't to my standardes.

I'm just kidding. I know quite a few people from the South and they are nothing like the above post. Just a joke. smile

$50 a day plus lodging usually works, but it can be done cheaper.

2 nights include free food with the SWXC Chili Cookout and CALMINI BBQ. Dinner at the Outlaw can run $20 per person plus $100 for drinks. Restaurants range from cheap to 4-star expensive.

Re: Seems early but.....GOX IV? - 22/01/03 04:36 PM

Give or take a few dollars yes.

BTW for the record I left Illinois with a little over 500 dollars and made it back with around 30.00 or so. That includes gas, hotel for one night during the trek out, and then food and drink for the whole time, and gifts for family and friends. My lodging had already been paid for before we left.

Re: Seems early but.....GOX IV? - 28/01/03 12:28 PM

GOX is a blast. The trails are very scenic and all the old ruins add to the atmosphere. As far as the 4 wheeling, the trails are somewhat different and all have challanging sections, especially Black Bear.

The social "gatherings", with different folk from all over the country, are unique to say the least.

See you in 03,

Ivor

Check Ouray Colorado\'s Website for lodging and other info.

If anyone out there needs some local info let me know, I live 45 minutes away from Ouray. And since you will be only 45 minutes away from Telluride, anyone who's got an extra day you HAVE to come check this little town out.

Have a day. smile
