Telluride trails under closure (?) - 24/10/03 02:50 PM

Well it looks like GOX2003 might be last one that was running trails around Telluride (namely Imogene, Black Bear and Yankee Boy Basin) - according to article i just spotted in local newspaper San Miguel Country bans use of OHV vehicles whatsoever, and Telluride is voting for it. There are still debates, but they aint look good as Telluride officials want to close those....

I am not quite sure how they would enforce it and how it will all work out but it $uck$.

OHV means ATV's and non-street legal motorcycles because they were cutting through Telluride on city streets between Black Bear and Imogene.

4X4's and street legal motorcycles are not affected.

Well thats relieve, thanks Ian.

I just got impression from article that they banned OHV already and want to close it for 4wheeling overall. But if its not so - good. I wouldnt mind to get pesky ATVs off from trails - not a single bit smile

Do you have a link to the article ?

I would prefer that we all vote for every tree hugger in Telluride to die a horrible death, but that's just me.

Actually i was wrong and Ian was right. They were talking only about OHV , as it turned out.
Here is text of that article (finally got around to find it):
------------------------
Telluride seeks OHV compromise

TELLURIDE, Colo. - The debate about OHVs - the acronym commonly used to describe all-terrain vehicles and dirt motorcycles - is in full bloom in Telluride.

The high-mountain passes around Telluride are among the most renowned in the nation among four-wheelers and others. It's considered high sport to cruise from Silverton to Telluride to Ouray while traversing a trio of above-timberline passes. Ouray definitely caters to this motorized crowd, and Silverton does, too.

But San Miguel County, where Telluride is located, bans OHVs on these roads. Enforcing this ban is nearly impossible, however. Plus, there's also the issue of neighborliness. The Ouray area absorbs some of the workers from Telluride, and Silverton is among Colorado's poorest, dependent entirely on about 10 weeks of summer business.

Art Goodtimes, a San Miguel County commissioner, wants a compromise on a regional level, leaving two passes open to OHV use, but keeping one closed. While some people seemed to concur with the compromise, The Telluride Watch reported a sourness evident at a recent meeting. "This is something you don't compromise on," said Telluride Town Councilman Mark Buchsieb. Telluride, he said, is "not responsible for serving every group. Nationwide the abuse of these groups is outrageous."

So, unless they go nuts, we are all good smile Pity its about 5 months till it clears up, anyway..

While being dragged behind our X's at GOX V??? (how many is it now? Made 2, missed 2, yeah 5). I'd be happy to volunteer some chain, cuffs, and a hitch pin on Max. The other alternative is to send them to California with all the other fruitcakes trying to close OHV sites.

Have you made plans for GOX '04 Ian? Looks like it might be the last stand for some of the early owners, but what a ride it's been...

Nothing lasts forever. Eff the tree huggers!
