Questions for GOX veterans - 16/04/02 02:17 PM

Those of you who drove Black Bear Pass, how difficult was this trail to drive in your X? Specifically the last part with the switchbacks?

I've read on several websites that this portion of the trail is dangerous and difficult because of the switchbacks.

Were there any points at which you were afraid of sliding or rolling off the edge of the road (such as that first grade with the disappearing right-hand curve)?

I'm curious because the trail looks spectacular, and I'd really like to check it out during an upcoming trip (pre-GOX3), but I don't want to freefall 1000 feet to my oblivion because the road is too narrow and there's not enough traction to stay on it.

Thanks

It's not a traction issue, there's plenty of that, it's just tight around the 4 switchbacks. A 2 point turn will get you around them.

I got 17 Xterras down the steps and switchbacks in 30 minutes last year at GOX with no problems. It's only challenging if you let it freak you out.

The bear has more bark then bite wink really not that dangerous or difficult during dry conditions if you pick the correct line IMO. Seemed more like a moderate trail to me than the “difficult” portrayals that I had heard/read about.
