when is GOX 3

when is GOX 3 - 23/09/01 04:21 PM

So are the dates for GOX 3 set yet. I wanna be able to start planning next year.

Re: when is GOX 3 - 23/09/01 06:45 PM

Just guessing here, but it probably won't be Labor Day and it probably won't be July 4th.
July 4th is crowded. A small number do Moab after, so that won't be a concern(heat and all).
I would guess it will be around the middle of August sometime.
Again, just a guess. Ian will now shred any logic I may have tried to spew!
wink Oh yeah and

The only problem with Labor Day week is the number of college students who can't attend due to classes.

Re: when is GOX 3 - 25/09/01 02:42 PM

I'm in college and I went anyway.
I skipped one week of classes to go to GOX,
a small price to pay IMHO.
It's not that hard to make up classes as long as you plan ahead.

The only reason I want GOX moved before Labor day is because I'm planning to be on a house boat at Lake Powell on labor day weekend.

I am a college student and i wont be drinking all the beer. But i dont want to miss any school either.

Since 70% of the work I do takes place between July 15th and September 15th, I guess I am like the proverbial armless, legless man thrown into the ocean.

Sorry for the bad-humor, but I love road trips and this one would be great. But I will likely never get to attend. frown

Re: when is GOX 3 - 02/10/01 11:32 AM

I work for a university in public safety, I'm also a student. I don't mind missing a week of classes so much although I would prefer not to. My problem is they won't give us the 1st two weeks of fall semester off or the first week of winter and summer semesters.

Maybe if I invite the Chief to go with....

I'd like to make it to GOX3 next year.Hope my underway schedule doesn't interfere with it (USS Constellation CV64, "America's Flagship").Course it all depends on what happens with getting rid of the terrorists between now and then too.

From a family man stand point, my two boys would like to come along so lets have it before school starts in late August.

Yeah.. Early August would be even better(school starts real early here, like Aug. 20).. I would love to go to GOX 3 so I can pick Ian's vast wealth of knowledge..

And kick Primary's ass.. laugh :p

Hmmm... you're making the huge assumption that Primary would actually show up. Remember, he really has a 4Runner, so it's doubtful he'll ever show his face around us.
:p laugh

I really don't care when GOX is. I'll make it again if I can, and if I can't then it's my loss. It's really not our choice to decide when it is unless Ian decides to let us all vote. So for now, I'll just wait for him to pick what's best for him. Everyone needs to remember that no matter when it is, there will always be people who can't make it, so it's pointless to try to find the ideal week for EVERYONE.

Hell, I still haven't figured out whats wrong with them this year.. confused All I know is, is that they've given 2 games away this year and the injuries are killing us. Anyway, I hope you can make it to GOX III. The wife and I are planning on it. Our Xterra club just got back from the outer banks this past Sunday. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend, so I had to say them all!! LOL. Join up with us sometime for a local X-cursion. We're planning on running Uwharrie National Forrest next month. Later

Labor Day - Yes! I hope I can work out my schedule at work to escape the office.
Even for non-College people time off is still a challenge. There will never be a good time for all.
The great thing is that people can arrive early if they choose, spend some time in Colorado, enjoy 4-wheeling, then participate in activities.

Re: when is GOX 3 - 09/12/01 08:33 AM

well if it really matters...

let me rephrase... and holiday week is best for me... be it Labor day, or July 4th(as GOX1 was)...

in all honesty more people will be able to make it on labor day week then wont be able to make it... that was the point of my post...

i dont think ian ever voted NO on Labor day... in fact the impression i got was more of a

"i would like it to be labor day, the only problem is that college students..."

no matter what date he sets some people will not be able to attend... at least with 9 months of notice there wont be the problem i had with WEST X(not enough notice) and hopefully people can plan ahead and attend

Well not to be argumentative but Ian had taken things other then just college students and people with kids into consideration earlier...i.e. weather. That is what is going to dictate when I organize the 140 mile Mojave Road trip in 2002.

On the way home Saturday, the mountains of Colorado got dumped on with a foot of fresh snow. Had that happened in Ouray, GOX would have been nothing more than sitting around Ouray drinking beer wondering what the trails were like.

Anyone want to run Black Bear in a foot of snow ?

I'm currently doing research on weather to come up with an end all, be all date for GOX, and it may be in August. Sorry, but Moab is no longer a consideration for planning GOX.

An another consideration of weather

Labor Day was nice, but the weather can come in early and close trails. Jeep Jamboree has moved up to the second week in September due to snow problems in the past. The storm we got over the weekend was not uncommon.

Moab is no longer a concern due to the small number of people who want to go there after GOX.

If you want to go to Moab, I'm working with Nissan and Calmini to have an event (all Nissans, not just Xterras) at Easter Safari, which will break the year up nicely with 2 big gatherings several months apart.

Moab isn't that hot anyway if you turn the A/C on.

The above can be referenced HERE . Nothing was left out... I included the entire qoute.

But I guess something has changed... that is why I was confused frown eek earlier.

But like I said earlier...

Re: when is GOX 3 - 09/12/01 11:41 AM

Except for July 4th, Labor Day is the only Summer holiday.

Having GOX during the Labor Day week allows people 9 days off, by only taking 4 off work. Those 9 days allow 2 full days on each end of the week for travel to and from Ouray.

Trailing August, the weather should always be superb, unless a freak storm dumps a ton of snow. It's a chance I'll take, since fresh snow doesn't close a trail as much as snow that has been sitting frozen on a trail for 6 months (what happens in July).

College students may miss out, but GOX should be there when they graduate.

Re: when is GOX 3 - 09/12/01 01:00 PM

Hey GOX happens very early in the school year when it is still feasible to miss some days. I took the full week off and attended gox. I had no problems making up the work. It is all about how determined you are to attend.
We go to college to get degrees, we get degrees to make more money, we make more money so we can afford nice trucks, we want nice trucks so we can go play. I figure screw it I will skip a bunch of steps and play now.

As far as people with kids I understand their concern. On the other hand how much more will your children learn about the world by traveling and enjoying nature, rather than sitting in a room passing notes and ignoring their teachers.

Just to point something out. Some schools do have a policy where if you don't show to the first week of class they drop you. Mine is one such school.

But your right, you have to prioritize. As far as school goes, I can probably get permission from my one Prof to miss that week. But for someone taking multiple classes it may be alot harder to get that permission.

The hard part for me is getting that time off from work. I work in Public Safety at a university, and getting time off during that week is very hard. I might just have to call in sick every day from Colorado. smile

Personally I'd rather take 5 days off, insted of 4 days with the holiday. I get paid alot to work the holiday. laugh

No matter when it is schedule, hopefully I will be out ther with eveyone this year.

When you talk to your professors just tell them that you won't be there, and you'll be having a great time in Colorado. They'll understand.

Hopefully this year Ian will do something to avoid all the "I'll be there's" that don't show. If you're serious about going, send Ian $25 and when you get to Ouray he'll give you back a 20 spot, don't show and you get zip, nada, zero, nothing (nada, as in nada damn thing).

Just trying to help you out Ian laugh

I'll be there, when do you want my deposit?

Re: when is GOX 3 - 03/01/02 07:08 AM

I would support either a deposit or registration fee. The work that went into the event is enourmous.

Looking forward towards GOX. Hopefully other events will be scheduled for this spring in warmer/lower climates.

Registration fee is a good idea, maybe include something if you actually show up to receive it. Like a mug or something. Natta return on money or gift if no show.

Re: when is GOX 3 - 10/01/02 09:46 AM

Sorry for the stupid newbie input, but I'm assuming you guys are going to Ouray for GOX3. I've been going to that area every summer for 14 years. Ian is right. In July, very few of the passes will be open. You won't be able to run Imogene, Black Bear, Poughkeepsie or probably even most of the Alpine Loop. I realize that for a lot of people with children in school (or those that are attending themselves) Labor Day isn't the optimal time for you, but any other time of the year in that part of the country, the trails are pretty much closed if you want to do the entire trail.

Two cents,
Sean
Posted by: XOC

Re: when is GOX 3 - 10/01/02 11:27 AM

Usually it's just Black Bear and Poughkeepsie that are still snow covered.

The Alpine Loop trails and Imogene are plowed every year, and open by Memorial Day.

The original GOX was held over 4th of July 2000, and everything was open, but it was a low snow year for Colorado.

I went end of July about 3 years ago and Imogene was still being plowed towards the top of the pass. Everything else was open though. Guess it depends on the year.

Hmm, how about a GOX3 Bumper sticker? Or a T-shirt (well, maybe not that as a gift)?

If we are going to do a deposit, I'm in. When I send it just depends on how much and when you need it buy (kinda short on cash due to college expenditures right now, will be fine soon (hopefully))

Had both last year.
Ian gave the stickers free, Paul made the T-Shirts and they sold for about $15-20.

I still think all GOX attendees sould have a GOX button placed under their screen names here on the XOC. laugh
