Max - Hopefully our schedules will allow us to get together and do some trailriding. Keep working on that site, it is pretty cool. We need rain up here in order to make the trails more interesting, right now it is mostly just a giant dust bowl.

Yeah we know what you mean, I'm getting a fire extigusher to take with so I don't pull a "get stuck, grass underneath catches fire bit"......I can't remeber who that was, anyway we were suppose to get rain yesterday and today......got zip. I here the pipeline might still be open up there. I'd like to finally get up notrh and take the vacation I keep putting off soon but I think not this summer. Kinda babbling here....anyway TGIF. It's almost Miller time! [Wave]

Are these the areas you're going to?

Black River Falls looks pretty sweet. I'd definitely like to get down there sometime. I don't know if Fort McCoy is the bombing range you are talking about, but if it is, according to that terrible website I posted above, the officials at the base are out to get as many citations as possible, even if you don't deserve them. I don't know if that is true at all, just what I read on the site.

Take some photos of whereever you go. I'm curious to see what's available.

TC, that is tthe area but the web pages are from 1999. Check this thread for more info.

http://www.xterraownersclub.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=63;t=000018

Fort McFCoy is now a closed base only military personnel are allowed on base, especially since sept 11. The entrances have been beefed up and have anti-entry barriers. I have been on a few trails that boarder the base but have never been approached. Many people live adjacent to the base and farm there.

That said Black River State Forest no longer allows free trail runs. I have contacted the Jackson county police, who have jurisdiction there, and they have said per a phone conversation, I have nothin in writting, quote "If a road is marked on a map and is NOT designated as ATV/Moto or snowmobile ONLY, of NO MOTOR VEHICLES, then it is legal to drive on." BUT, and I say but, there is a movement to restrict access to even logging roads, which are not on maps because they are so new and very clearly vehicle roads. The tree nuts would like no vehicles allowed at all to these areas even given the remoteness of the area.

It appears that "Mud" clubs like the site you gave me are responsible for the demise of 4x4 in wisconsin. There was a movement in 2000 to end free 4x4 in public areas that succeeded. The 4x4 that most of the xterra clubs engage in are different than the 4x4 clubs of old. In wisconsin they tended to be rip it up types. They gave 4x4 a bad name AND helped to stamp out ALL 4x4 in WI. I contacted J&L 4x4 of Sun Prairie, WI, all they do is 4x4 mods, and they indicated that if you did not know someone with land in WI you would not be 4wheelin' here. Now, if you have ever been to Sun Prairie, for maybe the Corn Fest, 'nough said, a good majority of the vehicles are modded out 4x4's. Not that EVERYONE in SunPrarie is a red neck, but.

So the answer would be no. these are not the trails I use.

If you would liek more info on the Air Guard bombing range it is named Hardwood. Do a search on MSN for 'hardwood bombing range'. You get an eye full.
Here is the official site for the range, Harwood Bombing Range

But the search again shows why we cannot 4wheel in wisconsin. i.e.

http://www.wisinfo.com/dailytribune/wrdtlocal/283081252671976.shtml

The last one is the most current. Black Hills sounds good but it is a drive from Madison and would need more time to go.

Hopes this helps.

maximus, so are the logging roads up in Marinette County legal to drive on or no? I was there last month.

Not that they are that much fun or challenging, but if I want to camp in a certain area would I be able to drive them?

Re: Wisconsinites, weekend runs...... - 23/07/02 04:22 PM

Depends on the local laws. I would contact the county sheriff who would most likely have the most juridiction over the roads. Alot of the smaller towns do not have cops, they rely on the county sheriff. State laws do not USUALLY cover them. It also depends on the green movement in that area. I WOULD NOT RELY ON THE LOCALS unless you know them.

If you know where 5 corners is at in Cederburg. Every Sunday afternoon the MIDNIGHT MUDDERS II have a spot out there, I believe 70 acres. There's a gas station on the corner. If you take the road heading south west, you'll see a restaurant not far from the gas station (not sure what it's called) Behind there is a dirt road heading back to the woods. They should be out there, just ask if you can have a little fun and u should have no probs.

There's a little bit of everything out there
