ShrockWorks Differential Protection

Ok they are finally done. Pics are of the D44 version (For Offroad Models w/ rear locker).

The Nissan axle version (for non Off-road model 2005+ Xterra's & Frontiers) is done too. It Looks almost exactly the same. Will have pics of that one in a couple days.

The Ring is 3/8" Steel
The Guard is 1/4" steel
New longer SS Hex bolts included.

The design of this cover offers several benefits:

- No loss of ground clearance at what it already the lowest point on the truck.

- Complete protection of the vulnerable cap which can be pushed into the ring rear when hitting something in reverse.

- Prevents the lip from getting peeled back when dragging over rocks which will cause fluid leaks.

- Allows you to maintain the factory mounts for the emergency brake cable and the rear brake line.

- Doesn't require removal of the stock cover, re-sealing and re-filling.

Comes bare steel. Powder Coat Black +20.00.

Out of curiosity, is that the standard D44 bolt pattern? (You SAS guys know where I'm going with this).

No, the bolt pattern is totally different than any other D44 out there. Don't ask me why, Nissan is just screwed up I guess.

For you other D44 guys out there (non Nissan Variant) I would seriously look at the RockCrusher covers. Their prices have come way down (you can find then in the $50 range) and they are killer covers. I got them on the front and rear of my Jeep and they have held up great.

yeah I'm kidding but you are making me break the bank. We have a joint checking so thats not going to work so I have been pulling from my savings I have had since i was 5. The skids are easy to hide. I don't know how the hell I am going to explain the bumper when it comes in. She currently is driving my X in the winter while her car is in storage. Any ideas?

We are going to do a std D44 cover. There are a few people here at the shop that have a D44 in their rigs, and they want one one too. A std (non-Nissan) D44 IS a little different though. This one wont work.

yea, I think that is the "oldschool" version of Kevin. Since that pic. his X has morphed quite a bit. SAS and other goodies.

I still think its one of the sexiest X's I have ever seen...well technically I have never 'seen' another modified X besides my own. me being from a small town in New Mexico (where every highschool kid drives an X but noone ever modifies them)

Ok, in that picture it was the 3" Calmini lift, 2" AC body lift, Shrock sliders, ARB front bumper, Warn 9000# winch, snorkel, Calmini roof rack, Shrock ARB front skid, rear locker, GPS, CB, dog hair, and I wanna say 33" Interco Truxxs MTs on Rock Crawler Rims...what'd I miss (I know somethings).

As for the red it was the red Grizzly Grip paint on bed liner.

Jim, you're correct, the rear axle of the first gen is a 3rd member design and unless you backed into something REALLY hard, I don't think you could bust open the pumpkin...but hey I've been wrong before and I'm sure Badercarma has figured out a way

I've caved the rear cover on a Toyota 3rd member style axle into the ring gear before. It can be done...if you're skilled at breaking stuff like me.

Cool, shouldn't take more than a few minutes to install, unless I have a beer for each bolt.

Just checked and the tracking # is showing the 23rd.

It's not hard to install, but my suggestion would be, if you remove all the bolts and it starts leaking, to pull the cover, re-seal it and fill it back up. Too many times have I seen diff covers leak because of someone adding diff armor and not resealing the cover. It turns a 10 minute job into an hour job, but might save you a headache down the road.

The Shrock armor can take a pretty good beating.

Is it a gasket or silicone? Did yours leak?

You use rtv silicone. I can get you the exact specs for what Nissan calls for if you want.

Mine was leaking before I even put it on. I had peeled the cover back twice. It was so bad that when I took the bottom three bolts out, diff fluid just poured out. I already planned on taking the cover all the way off to pound the lip back, so it wasn't a big deal.

That's good advice. If it is already leaking, take the time to remove and reseal. If it isnt already leaking, I'd try just putting the new one on....that should be OK. If it does start leaking you can remove and re-seal.

Came in yesterday and looks top notch.
Now to get 'er on. When I have the time.

There have been two people complain about the supplied bolts. It seems the heads are stripping out if you try and properly torque them.

That's not entirely shocking, the 3/16 inch hex looks like a good idea, but I'd rather of had the Cap bolts or regular bolts. Either way, it's a simple trip to the harware store to change. I have quite a bit of hardware at home and will see what I can find when I pull it off to seal my drip, drip. The supplied hardware seems to be slightly larger than the size specified, but definately not metric.

BTW-I made sure to throw a 3/16 allen wrench into my metric toolbox.

The instructions say 20 ft-lbs. If you do that, there shouldnt be a problem. I know at least one person used 31 ft-lbs for some reason.

A std 5/16 x 1" (course thread) bolt will work fine. 20 ft-bs for grade 5 and 29 ft-lbs for Grade 8.

Probably because the Service Manual states 36ft-lbs for C200 and 31ft-lbs for the M226 (D44 variant).

Use our instructions not Nissan's!

Well, dropped the cover to fix the leak and found some chunks of metal. I think they are from the spider gears, but I'll let the Dealership tell me when they're fixing it under warranty. Only 27K miles. :rolleyes:

There actual bits of metal, or was there a metalic slim/goo? The slime/goo is normal, bits of metal is not.

There were two Chunks of metal about a quarter inch in size as well as the gear oil had a very cool metallic look to it in the sun. :rolleyes:

Actually just spoke with my SA and they are going to replace the whole rear differential.

I'm actually glad to have found this and owe it to Shrock as I wouldn't have looked at the gear oil until I had to and may have been stranded somewhere.

BTW - My manual said to use 75W-140 Synthetic oil, which I bought at Nissan for about $20/quart. It only used about 1 and 1/8th quarts to fill to the opening.

And I am not sure what Nissan's deal is, but it seems that if there is a bad diff, the dealer techs aren't allowed to rip into it. They are instructed by Nissan to just replace the entire thing.

I don't know if it's because they think the techs are idiots and can't set gears, or if they want to take a closer look at the diff failures.

There is a guy over on one of the Frontier boards who has an 05 NISMO which has the same rear axle as the OR X's and he blew his out not long ago and Nissan wouldn't cover it because he has 2" lift blocks in the rear.

Also, USMC_Xterra just recently changed his front gear oil in his 05 S model and found it to be 1pt low (it only take 1 3/4 pints to begin with). He said there were no leaks, so it came from the factory that way.

Yeah, the Nissan gear oil is expensive. I run Mobile 1 which is about ~$12/quart. The Jeep crowd swears by Royal Purple which is about $9 quart.

When I get it back hopefully tomorrow, [eta - not till thursday now, seems as they are having issues obtaining one, I wonder why? I talked with an insider who told me there is a part number change for the '05 Diff and the new one has 4 spider gears instead of two.] I'll definately look at that front diff and make sure it has the right amount of fluid and maybe I'll pull a bit out and see what it looks like in the sun.

Put the Diff cover back on with my new hardware and new rear-end. Found my oil was already very dark so I replaced it with New Nissan oil.

Already been wheeling with it and the peace of mind is great.

I bought the grade 8 bolts, and installed this on Bren's Fronty. Of course, it started leaking as soon as I pulled the lower bolts out. put it on anyway, and stopped leaking for couple of days, but then came the drip...drip....
Took it over to Peoria Nissan as they have always been good to me anyway, and the service advisor we use, Brad Ernest had it taken care of under warranty w/o a question. Keeps me bringing my X and her Fronty in cuz he tries to do right by us.
So anyway, diff resealed and Shrock ring installed.

Wow, now that is one hell of a dealer.
