New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper

New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 29/07/05 10:28 AM

Underbelly skids for the 2000-2004 Xterra are about 95% done now. We need to do one final fitment on a truck that has seen a little less wheeling action, and they will be good to go. Here is a sneak peak of the engine/trans and tcase skids. There are two spots blurred out bec. that area isn't finished.

The rear bumper/tire carrier is about 85% done. No pics yet, but soon. We should be done in a few weeks.

Do any of you want just a rear bumper w/o a tire carrier? The way it is currently designed, I dont think the spare will go back in, so you would need to order the tire carrier and bumper as a package. That could be changed, but it would weaken the bumper somewhat.

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 29/07/05 11:05 AM

the skids look great; really looking forward to pics of the rear bumper.

quick question, maybe this is a non-issue as I haven't seen one of the aftermarket bumpers with a swing away spare in person, but does the arm that swings away have a provision to hold it inplace when open? Thought of this while camping this week and using the hatch tent that keeps the rear open. I mean, it could be held open using a bungee cord, but I just thought there might be a pin or something to lock it in place.

Also, any provisions (like a pre-drilled hole) to mount a CB radio antenna or route the cable, or to mount jerry cans?

thanks in advance. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 29/07/05 11:46 AM

I'm certainly looking forward to the rear bumper with the tire carrier. It would be nice if the carrier was removable, since right now I don't carry my spare while driving around at home.

Skids look great. laugh

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 29/07/05 12:00 PM

Dagger...I thought you stopped carrying the spare to save room? With the carrier, you'd have the same room, as the spare would be following you around, instead of in the truck.

laugh

(You need to carry a spare dude, that's crazy running around with only 4 tires)

This is the equivalent view of Skid-Row's plates...The Shrock's coverage looks more complete.

How much is the rear bumper w/tire carrier gonna run??

Skids look great!!

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 29/07/05 02:13 PM

I will need a rear bumper with tire carrier.

Also, if 2" & 3" Body lift options are available will make happy a lot of Xterra owners [ThumbsUp]

Nice skids [ThumbsUp]

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 29/07/05 02:38 PM

My wish list for the rear bumper/carrier...

Wraps the corners, even if just sturdy bars looping around to brace against lay overs, corner impacts, etc....not another "center piece only" type replacement bumper like the others.

Holds cans, hi-lift and CB mounts, at least as options.

Accomodates a 2" BL.

Is mounted so as to leave as much vision to the rear as possible, yet not intefere with departure angles.

Opens and closes easily to accomodate cargo ingres/egress.

Is braced so as to not force the spare tire to smash into the rear glass if hit from behind.

Has shackle/recovery point mounts, welded through, as on front bumper.

Does not hurt departure angles.

Makes women feel strangely attracted to the driver.

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 29/07/05 03:43 PM

Rear bumper stuff.

>>a provision to hold it inplace when open?
Dont know about others, I was considering offering it. I know exactly how I would do it and have all the parts here already. It would add about $20 to the price.

>>Also, any provisions (like a pre-drilled hole) to mount a CB radio antenna?
CB antenna mount is planned.

>>to mount jerry cans?
We decided against offering a Jerry can mount. Id planned to offer one tucked next to the tire somewhere, but it turns out that the only way to do it is behind the tire. Doing that you end up with the tire hanging way out back and compromise too much on departure angle for my taste. Its going to be more of a lean, mean & bullet-proof strong approach rather than a carry everthing and the kitchen sink approach.

It will have provisions for carrying a highlift jack.

It will not wrap around the sides. For me offer this, it would have to offer real protection, bolt on, and not cost a fortune. We didnt feel it was possible to meet all three design goals, so we scrapped it.

It will have a receiver hitch, frame stiffeners and 1 thick steel recovery points for shackles, one hand easy open/close and 2 body lift adjustable.

>> It would be nice if the carrier was removable
It will come off with one bolt.

>>How much is the rear bumper w/tire carrier gonna run??
Not sure yet, but Im trying to keep the price lean & mean too.

Jim, it all sounds great to me. Nice work. Will it be available in the gold/zinc plated option for those of us who will paint it?

I'm ordering one as soon as it is available. laugh

I carry a repair kit on the road. Some cars (ie BMW) now come with no spare, just a plug kit and a can of air/sealant. I'm less likely to tear a sidewall on the highway. laugh Besides, if I have a tire on the back all the time, you can't see all the stickers. laugh

There is a flange bent up vertical on the edges to provide stiffness, like this |____|
The vertical flanges are tall enough that if the plate does bend, they will contact the frame and stop it from bending further.

I need about 2 hrs with an Xterra here that isnt beat-up underneath and they'll be done! I think they are done. I just need to verify.

I dont know about the Calmini skid. I've never really looked at one up close.

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 02/08/05 06:13 AM

I would assume, if it comes off with just one bolt, that it acts as a pin, that could be easily greased, by disassembling/greasing/reassembling. Or a shot of canned white lithium or something every now and then.

I see the issue, but think if its going to cause Jim extra effort, that it is something that can easily be done consumer end to defray additional costs.

The one's we've done so far have been maintenance free. Stainless steel pin & bronze or polymer bearings. I've never heard of them squeaking.

How was the one that squeaked setup?

Goal is about $500 for a complete set of four plates.

Front
Engine/Trans
Tcase
Gas Tank

Not sure yet if we will be able to pull it off, but that is the goal.

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 27/08/05 07:31 PM

Sorry for the limbo. The rear bumper is just about done. I need to get another 2000-2004 Xterra in here for a day or two and it will be good to go. All we really need to do is lay out the tire and highlift mount on the swingarm. Everything else (the hard stuff) is done.

We have about 12 products underway right now and things are chaos!

All of you who have pre-ordered will be first in line. Price guess is $650-750. I'd be happy to take pre-orders from anyone interested. Your card will not be billed until pics and full info are released.

Jim

Could you give me a price on a full set of skid plates for an O1 shipped to 17404. Also, what kind of time frame from the time I place the order. I am hoping to get them and have them installed for the NorEaster.

Thanks
Mike

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 07/02/06 03:26 PM

I called Jim today. He said the swing gate was supposed to be lifted to rest on the nylon pad. This allows the weight to rest on the pad and not the hinge bolt. He told me he didn't have time due to all other things going on but you could taper the bottom plate so the gate will slide easier into place. Just take it to a belt sander or other kind of sander. The entire nylon pad is black throughout so there isn't a color issue there.

I also complimented him on a job well done.

So you definetely made an impression on her.

I keep telling her we're having an affair...but I thinks she's starting to suspect I might be wheeling.

So, keep it up with the Gaily Painted Pony and the plastic cigarette holders routine...its our best chance of convincing her we're an item.....

And stop bragging to the guys that I'd pay for the hotel room...Geez....try to be chivalrous...

Not painting the corners, they get beat up too much on the trails. Mine are all mangled to hell. I may get new ones and paint them black.

yea it's me. I signed up with a new name, because my former girlfriend finds it necesarry to monitor this board, looking for me.

Not that she won't figure it out, but its worth a shot.

as for the X... I am living part time in S.F. and park the X outsideM on the street. I am working on buying another car, so I can leave the X at my parents house. (hopefully) But if that doesn't work out, I will need to sell the X.

But as long as I have it, I will continue to work on it, and beat the hell out of it.

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 22/02/06 11:47 AM

SO here is the Dealie.
Most know of the 1/4 inch of squeeky space there is to get the lift gate past the high lift.

The 3 dollar answer hangs in an auto store near you. I went to advanced auto and bought some door trim. Little thin black piece of plastic to protect the edge of the door!! I applied the strip to the affected side of the lift gate. There is still enough breathing room AND the probability of dinging up that side of the lift gate is greatly reduced.

Enjoy!

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 28/02/06 10:46 AM

Well after much internal debate on which rear swing arm to get, Calmini or Shrock, I have added the Shrockworks bumper to my order.
I prefer Calmini's design with the tire being centered, but Jim's Hi-lift jack mount and great customer service won me over.....well that and the discount since I had just ordered the front bumper last week. laugh

Uggghhh...now I gotta write the check to pay my visa bill.
Posted by: TJ

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 28/02/06 11:30 AM

The centered tire blocks most of your view...a mount to one side leaves at least some view.

I got a clear fresnel sheet to mount on the rear hatch glass...the kind that gives you a wide angle view from the rearview, so I'll potentially be able to maximize the visibility out the back, despite the tire in the way.

laugh

This should work with any tire carrier option...I'll be trying it out on the Shrock, if I ever find the time to mount the bumper...

...and also the kind that's great for instantaneous combustion of random things, bugs, wood, etc if you get out and play with it in direct sunlight [LOL]

For anyone else that's interested, I'm talking with Jim now about a rear bumper with the hi-lift mounts set so that it's crossways/diagonal instead of straight up. I like having the extra length of my 60" hi-lift, but it would get caught on everything if it was mounted straight up and down. I'll let you guys know how it works if Jim can work his magic smile

Fresnel, not concave/convex lens.

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 28/02/06 11:47 AM

no no no, fresnels are like 10,000 times better than concave/convex. you can focus the sunlight into an uber beam of light... I remember writing my name in some wood, moving it as quick as I would a pencil, leaving singed burn marks. Fun stuff, hehe.

I went wheeling with all the guys from Shrockworks this weekend. All work and no play will kill a guy.

Maybe they should have stayed in the shop weelding and grinding up the last few things on the tire carriers. I can say I saw 8 or 10 rear bumpers over 90% finished when I stopped in on Thursday.

Next batch almost done and ready for powder. About 2 weeks and they will be out of here.

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 06/03/06 10:43 AM

If camping with him on Friday and Saturday nights and wheeling with him Friday and Saturday counts on talking to him recently, then yes I have.

I have a bumper in this batch as well and they are very close to done. A laser cutter got a little sloppy with the bending of the hinge mounts and although I tried to machine them to save them, they had to be remade. Those parts came in on Friday morning as the guys were getting ready to leave for Mega Run 6 at Barnwell Mtn in Gilmer TX. Had the laser cutter not messed up the first batch of parts I think it is safe to say the bumpers would be at powder coating this week, as it is I would guess it will be early next week.

But... I am just a friend of the guys there who enjoys a common hobby. I can not speak with certainty about shipping dates.

EDIT : ok Jim posted while I was typing - guess you have the official word now [LOL]

The members and myself from MXO (Midwest Xterra Owners Club) would like to thank you Jim for the group buy. The skid plates I ordered are on the truck and were a breeze to install, no problems what so ever. [ThumbsUp]

I have to say the same. Shrockworks (Jim) is great to do business with. His stuff is the best, and service is first-rate. Yeah, we all had to wait for the rear bumper, but the design and construction is second to none. He does not ship a faulty product and takes care of is customers. wink

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 08/03/06 10:40 AM

I can attest to that. I was going to pass through Houston last year, so I finally ordered my Sliders, Jim hadn't yet picked them up from the powdercoaters yet but, he made it right with me and I picked them up on my own. The powder coat company owner even helped me put them on in his parking lot. Great people and the companies he works with are also of the top notch!

Thank you Jim.

Oh, I'm jealous. I just placed my order and now am going to spend several anxious weeks waiting. I can't wait.

I know it's been said before, but thanks Jim for your great customer service. You were very busy, phone was ringing off the hook, and you still took the time to go over every little detail and humoring my uneducated design questions. Thanks.

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 12/03/06 09:07 AM

hey question on the rear bumper. How you guys lock the hilift to the bumper so that it won't get stolen. I was just wondering if it came witha way to lock the hi lift to the bumper. thanks

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 12/03/06 09:47 AM

edstorm

I got a python lock from Masterlock at Walmart. They are a cable type lock(6feet long) that when you slide the end into the lock and lcok the cylinder, you can just pull the cable tight to tighten it. Kinda like a zip tie. The diameter of the cable is small enough to fit thru the holes in the jack. I had enough cable to wrap thru my spare, hi-lift and a jerry can on my skid row bumper. The lock also comes w/ a velcro keeper to wrap up the extra. I think it was about $13. They have another version in automotive that is about $18, I got mine in the bike section. The automotive one is hella ugly, flourescent green if I remember right, but the version I got is black/gray. I know that I don't have a Shrock bumper, but should serve the same purpose.

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 13/03/06 04:31 PM

considering that this thread originally started as a skid plate topic, I have a few questions about it, these might have been answered but I thread is LONG....and I don't think I got it through the first read. hehe//

- How difficult is removing the skid plates to change oil?
- any holes to drill?
- anyone notice a big change in performace, I just installed a TJM on my truck and I noticed a bit of a hit in the front suspension and I have bilsteins in the front. I heard the skids is like 100lbs.
- no one has mentioned any reviews about the full underbody skid plates...
- more pics (of the skid plates...with zinc plating?)????
- any idea that the skid plates can fit an TJM? seems like it does from the pics. The skid plates do leave a hole in between the bumper and frame still.
- doesn't cleaning mud off these skid plates become a pain?

oh and yeah, I ordered my carrier the other day!! hehe i passed on the hi lift because I don't have one and i'll just add it to my loadwarrior. if I ever get one.
Posted by: TJ

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 13/03/06 07:18 PM

No way to remeber all that....

But, you can adjust the t-bars to re-gain the TJM bumper sag you mentioned.

If you don't have the skid from the bumper to the first cross member, you can change the oil OK by reaching in.

I'm not sure if the skids have been battle tested and reported on in writing, but the guys I talk to say they are bullet proof, and cover way more than the Skid-Row plates (I have the S-R plates, for a couple of years now...)

Ok, that's all I can remember you asking...

laugh

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 14/03/06 12:40 PM

I just got mine on this weekend and like said they're bullet proof.I'll see if I can take a picture of them on.

The front skid gets bolted into the engine skid by 3 bolts that are welded onto the skid itself and two holes (which you'll have to drill out) on your lower radiator support. So taking it off will needed to be done for an oil change but it's really easy to take off..Just as easy as if you had to take the stock/OEM plate off..Jim has made provision the skids for other things like access to torsion bar adjusters, transfer drain plug and stuff like that.

But they cover so much more than the Skid Row skids do.The whole t-bars in fact have coverage.

Anything else you need to know ask away and I'll answer for ya.. wink

And here's a side shot from drivers side looking at the rear skid and gas skid as well.

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 14/03/06 01:18 PM

What they said above. Plus, you need to drill five (5) three eights inch (3/8") holes in the cross-members for the transfer case skid.

Well it doesn't take that long at all..A couple of hours at the most..But when you start getting a bunch of buddies over and you start BSing over some beers it takes all day. [Laughing]

Just make sure you have a couple of friends or a floor jack handy to help out with the install.I suggest both. Those skids are pretty heavy.

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 15/03/06 03:20 PM

The weight affects performance about like the same weight an equivalent passenger would add.

I think the skids add around 100 lb or so, so a kid gets in, and that's about the performance hit, if you are looking for a way to get a feel for it.

I have maybe 500 lb of steel on the X now...So its like my kids are on board all the time.

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 16/03/06 08:00 AM

Yeah I know what you mean TJ...

Here's a quick calculation of weight I'v added..

138 lbs. skids
200 lbs. winch + bumper
250 lbs. (roughly) rear bumper + Hi-Lift + tire
110 lbs. sliders

I'm not even gonna get into stuff inside my X....Damn I gotta put my X on a diet..
Posted by: Anonymous

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 16/03/06 01:49 PM

You are going to reach the GVW in just armor. wink
Posted by: TJ

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 16/03/06 03:11 PM

Lets see, skids are listed twice?

Tire and Hi-lift...would have had it anyway.

The winches are heavy...I chopped a huge amount of weight by swapping on synthetic winch line and an Aluminum fairlead for the roller fairlead....saved at least 40 lb right there.

Calculate the take off...you removed the front and rear bumper it came with...that's 100 lb or so easy...etc.

Taking off the stock skid plates lightens the load by maybe 25 lb (Mostly gas skid...), taking off the step rails, mud flaps and rear sway bar saves another 20 lb, etc.

You can ameliorate alot of the new weight in this way.

Of course, adding welding equipment, tools, spare parts, camping gear, shovels and axes, boxes of body bags, etc...can bring you right back up again.

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 20/03/06 03:52 PM

Hey, quick question for those with the Shrock bumper and skids...

Shrock offers a stainless steel plate as an option with the front bumper. Is that used in lieu of the front steel skid shown in the pics or does it bolt to the steel skid? Seems like the steel skid is the way to go if you only have a choice of using one or another.

Thanks. Skids look great, BTW. [ThumbsUp]
Posted by: Anonymous

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 20/03/06 04:01 PM

that stainless steal on does not replace the front steal one but rather feels up the gap between the bumper and the front skids. Doesnt really have to be purchased but it never hurts to get extra protection.
Posted by: Anonymous

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 21/03/06 02:08 AM

The stainless skid fits right in front of the front skid in these pictures. It overlaps slightly (about where the front bend is in the above pictures) Here is a picture with the full skids and the stainless skid as well, I am sorry it is so dark but I think you can get the idea at least.

a friend of mine received the full underbody skid plates and it connected directly to the shrock bumper. He has a 2 inch lift also, and I think the version of the underbody skid plate he ordered from jim was made for the 2 inch and shrock front bumper. Maybe you need to mention to him that you have the shrock front bumper as well.

I'll post a pic when I can, it definitely looks different from some pics I have seen here on this forum.

The Front Bumper Skid for a 2in BL version of our front bumper is indeed different.

There is no difference on the underbody skids.

The Good, The BAd, and the Ugly!

Well, I ordered my Front and rear bumper from Shrock Feb 28th, and today I began putting parts on the X...Yay!

The Good: [ThumbsUp]

Rear tire carrier arrived and installed! Ordered mine in Xterra Gray, and I am glad I did. The match is very close to the corner pieces.

THE BAD! [ThumbsDown]
I had to mess around with the latch and the tab to get it sit right. had to use a BFM on the tab ot get it to unlatch properly. No big deal it works fine now. My exhaust tip rattle a bit on the bumper...will have to mess with that later. I am annoyed that my locking reciever pin will not fit. The hole is too close to the bumper to slide in and allow the lock to fasten on the end.
the pic shows it inserted as far as it will go.

THE UGLY: mad mad
While I am a happy Shrock customer, and have sliders, 2 of the 4 skids, and now the rear bumper, the front bumper did not arrive as promised. Upon calling Jim, I was informed of a little border skirmish between him and his powedercoat vendor, and my bumper is the primary casualty. I am most pissed off that he did not bother to inform me that they are having to make me a new one, I had to call after the one I was expecting did not arrive and find this out. How do you lose a 4 foot steel bumper?
My truck is now partially naked:

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 21/04/06 05:09 PM

Nice looking Ty!

Strange, I had no issues with my rear bumper. The only thing is that the CB mount hole is a bit too large, but the CB works fine. Just let me know if you want help running the cable. If you run it the way I showed you last Friday, it is pretty damn easy. I did tap the power under the center console to power the radio. Low draw, so it should be no problem.

Hopefully you'll get the front on there soon.

Now we just have to get Jim to make a roof rack!

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 21/04/06 05:28 PM

Overall I am happy with it. I am still teed off about the front one though.

I ran the CB cable at work the other day, and have it all connected. You were right, it took about every inch of that 18' of cable. I just need to screw in a Firestik. I have one coming from CBWorld...should be here tommorrow it is red white and blue.

Okay, finally made the mount for the 7-pin. It is now under the truck where the spare used to be. Tucked up in there out of the way.

The mount took about 45 minutes to fab and mount.
Quick, easy, and hidden. Had to be done this way, because I wasn't drilling this bumper like I had done to the factory one. Remember?

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 24/04/06 01:36 PM

hey nice looking tire carrier.

i got mine installed over the weekend and it looks great. But i got a problem. I ordered the tire carrier with no high life jack holder and it was supposed to come with a CB mount, I can't seem to find it. Anyone order the carrier with no high lift mount? Where was the CB mount?

besides that, the tire carrier is awesome.

the problems listed in this topic really did come up but a rubber mallet and a trip to advance auto parts and I got the tire carrier in.

too bad my tjm bumper's rubber mounts broke when it went through the car wash.... or it would have been a great weekend. smile

He really does need to update his site with his new products (rear tire carrier and skids) but if that takes time away from replacing my "lost" front bumper then just leave the site outdated.... [Too much XOC]

The new www site is getting real close.

We are finally getting very caught up on orders. New capacity is coming on line & orders placed now are running 1-4 weeks depending on what it is.

Thank you very much to all of you who have been patiently waiting much longer than that though!

I have a 2005 Off-Road X.

Already have installed Shrock front bumper and ordered the Shrock skidplates.

I've also ordered the 3" BL from AC.

Anything to worry about moving the Shrock bumper up? Just a matter of using different holes in the front, or do I need to get an adapter?
Anything unusual for the skids?

Thanks.

Went out today on FR351 in Sinks Canyon outside of Lander, WY. It's nice to have the peace of mind that everything is covered.

I am jealous of anyone who lives in the West and isn't just a visitor like myself. Public lands are a pretty cool resource.

As for the skids, not a rattle or sqeak. They do have a few fresh pinstripes though. cool

You are probably going to have to have a bracket made. There is no way that I can see to move the Shrock front bumper up 3" with the stock brackets. Also, if you move it up, remember that when you are winching or using the bumper as a recovery point you are going to be putting more stress on the raised brackets than you would on the stock brackets. There is also the problem of fitting the front skid, you will need to fab up some sort of mounting bracket for it too.

This is one reason I am trying to avoid a BL.

One good thing about the BL, it raises that very low radiator.

About 4-5 weeks on a 1st gen.

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 05/05/06 08:29 AM

I believe the bumper is pre-drilled for the 2" BL, and stock height,...but ot for a 3" BL.

You could use the 2" BL holes, and just have an inch gap...which will allow flex clearance for the body.

I did the 2" BL, but only raised the bumper part of that to leave flex clearance as well.

Hey jim, I sent you another e-mail about the CB mount in my order that was not included in the tire carrier... not sure if you got it..... I have been waiting for somewhere to mount the antenna....

I wanted to see if you figured a solution to that since it has been quite some time since I heard from you. (3 weeks?)

I also wanted to order some shackles (4) and save on shipping if you were to ship something for the CB mounts. Besides that, the rear tire carrier and sliders are great.

Still also waiting for the windshield sticker.... smile

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 18/05/06 08:06 AM

Have fun!!! It isn't that hard and with help you can have it on in a jiffy. I helped andrew out with his tire carrier and we had it on in no time. Also you will have to some shoving as the powdercoating adds some thickness to it. We had to do some light hammering to the swing arm bolt b/c the powder coating made the hole a little on the tiiiiiiight side.

I myself have a FULL set of skids to strap on the X. As of now I am having a bear of a time trying to get the rear bolts off the gas skid. The bolts are really close to the skid and the rear diff/axle is really close to all of it making it a tough reach. But I am determined, I will find a way.

I don't know if it's supposed to be that way, but I had to beat the hell out of that bolt with a BFH to get it through. That worked, but I was wanting an even bigger hammer than the 3 pounder I was using.

Yeah it IS what you will need to do. We didn't have a rubber hammer, so we had to use a cloth barrier so we didn't mangle the top of the bolt. We had my truck handy to compare and because I painted my own bumper my bolt went in easier than his. The powder coat does add a bit of thickness. hammer with ease and lube up baby! You will like the new layout of his bumper, there is more room between the highlift and lift gate now, and the bottom pad is now bevelled.

It IS a thing of beauty!
Posted by: Shrock

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 19/05/06 09:26 AM

It's an exact fit, steel to steel, on the bolt and hinge bracket, so any powdercoat in there causes a tight fit.

No need for hammering. Just use a little file or pocket knife or something to remove the powdercoat in the 1" holes on the hinge brackets if it's tight.

Test fit the bolt by itself in the bracket w/o the carrier...easier that way.

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 29/06/06 08:24 PM

Got the bumper installed yesterday and it looks great just had two questions.

-The tire carrier part and spare tire lean slightly away from the truck as opposed to being completely vertical. Is this normal?

-How does the hi-lift jack install?

Sorry for the newb questions laugh
Posted by: Anonymous

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 29/06/06 10:07 PM

Take the bottom pad out of the hi-lift. Store inside your Xterra.

Lift hi-lift, line up the holes to the 2 bolts and use the two wing nuts (tighten), and don't forget to use a padlock to secure hi-lift.

alright thanks!

any idea about it leaning away from the truck?
Posted by: TJ

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 30/06/06 04:10 AM

I found its even better to just use the top wing nut/bolt to hold the bottom stand onto the standard...that way its right where you need it, and, taking off the wing nut to take off the standard also takes it off, saving a step.

laugh

I also found the Python Cable Lock reaches through the spare, as well as the standard and bottom stand, and can be put through at the top standard holes to secure the standard and plate, and then through the bottom to keep the slider from moving/being slid as well, and then back out to the spare...so one one lock secures the tire, the jack, etc.

laugh

As for the lean...

Its because you tightened/didn't tighten the bumper mount bolts that way...

If its loose, you should be able to move the tilt by holding it by the jack or tire, and shoving it back towards the truck, or, pulling it back to lean even further away, etc.

Push it back to vertical, and tighten th bumper mount bolts (The ones at the ends that the OEM bumper used)

laugh

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 30/06/06 10:56 AM

alright thanks TJ! It's not a very obvious lean and it feels secure so I'm just gonna leave it like that for now. It's gonna have to come off in a few weeks anyway when I put my body lift on laugh
Posted by: TJ

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 30/06/06 06:37 PM

OK - but remember - if its loose, and you back into something/get whacked from behind...it CAN push the jack/tire stuff into the hatch.

[Uh Oh !]

Re: New Stuff - Skid Plates & Rear Bumper - 01/07/06 12:34 PM

So Jim, if you ever do make the roof rack, remember to also fab something else up so I can rationalize giving you all my money. [LOL]

Actually, you don't have to store the bottom plate separately, you can use the upper Jack mounting bolt to hold it in place.

That way, merely undoing the upper wingnut that you take off anyway to remove the jack also releases the bottom plate.

laugh

I used a Python Cable Lock, and just ran it all the way through the spare, the jack and stand, and the swing...including looping it down under the jack mechanism, so it can't accidentally be ratcheted down, etc.

(In this pic, the cable insn't where it normally would be around the swing behind the tire...as the tire was being moved around a lot at the time to get between the spokes to line up with the view behind the truck from the rear view mirror)
