I have to add this...driving back roads in the X is NOT hardcore 4X4.

Check out "4 Wheel Freedom" by Brad DeLong.

It covers the basics very well, www.4x4now.com covers more advanced info.

Between the two you'll be able to 'wheel better than about 75% of the "4-wheelers" out there.

Practice, practice, practice....

That is the only way you get good at anything! Just get out there and try it! If you can't find a local X club, START one!

the best way to learn to drive off-road is to do it, rocks, mud, sand, whatever you can find locally. Go for it, you will have fun, and you will learn a lot. Also, go with more ecperienced 'wheeers, you can learn a lot form them. As far as reading goes, I can't think of the titles right now, but ther is a lot of good information out there, including one book whic is focused more on long-term expeditions.

Talk about a resurection.

Harry Lewellyn just put out a new 4x4 book called "Shifting into 4WD".

It looked really good online, so I bought. Its illustrated really well, and is meant for newbies (like me). It explains things in terms that your everyday person can understand. Very good if you don't have the experience.
