4x4, reverse and wheel turned hard = 0 mph

i was backing out of a dirt/grass hill where i parked my car (it's a driveway easement behind my house). i had the 4x4 on still, turned the wheel to pull onto the street and the truck stopped.

to test it, i went over to a large parking lot with a slope. put in 4x4, in Neutral and Reverse it will go back in a straight line. i turned the wheel hard and in reverse the truck stops. i put my foot on the gas and i feel like i'm fighting with it to get it to move.

any thoughts? it's an '06 with only 4k miles.

The short answer, you should not use 4x4 when on dry pavement/solid traction. You are binding the rotation, especially felt on turns.

Yeah... don't do that. When you turn, the outside wheels have to travel a different distance than the inside wheels - and more importantly in this case, the front wheels have to travel a different distance than the rear wheels. In a true part time 4WD like the X (as opposed to a more wussy full time system), there is no differential that allows for differences between the front and rear whees. This means that when you turn while in 4WD, the difference has to be made up with wheel slippage. That's no problem on a loose surface - but on one with a lot of traction you can make the driveline go boom if you give it enough gas.

Yeah - Sounds like you are using 4wd where you are supposed to be in 2wd...unless your dirt parking spot is way rougher terrain than typical.
