X at highway speeds - 01/02/04 07:46 PM

OK I knew when I bought my X that it did'nt ride as smooth as say a Tahoe would, but does everyones steering wheel shake over even the slightest bumps in the road? I know it's not the wheels out of balance because on flat, smooth road it drives fine. Is this just part of owning an X? and if so are there any mods/replacement parts I can install to help the problem? Mines got 34k on it.

thanks

I think I experience the same thing that you are talking about. I'm not sure why exactly it does that, perhaps because its build on a truck frame? It shouldn't be anything to worry about unless you just find it too uncomfortable to be bearable.

Well I put the front & back at 30psi just like the door jam recommends. What do you think?

That sounds fine. Sometimes people have them inflated too high and it can lead to a lot of feedback at the steering wheel over bumps.

Two cheap mods I got that seem to help with the steering shake/bouncing off of potholes, etc. Total for both is about $150. Easy install.

- Calmini Idler Arm Brace
- Bilstein Steering Stabilizer

For a 2WD, neither of those products are going to help the problem, they are simply going to mask it. Better to find out if there really is a problem first by taking it to the dealership.

Welp, sure enough the dealer found nothing wrong, I don't know maybe it's me. I have'nt driven a truck since high school but damn my brothers 2003 Z71 sure does'nt jerk around like the X does on uneven payment at 65+. But I'm comparing a $30K truck to my X, I know apples to oranges. I'm loving my X regardless, hope to own it for long time too, but let me ask 1 more question. I've got the Rugged TA's with 34k miles on them, maybe thats why my highway driving is'nt so smooth anymore? Are they even that great on the road to begin with?

Damn I'm just a noob, call me a boob whatever. I've never owned a vehicle with recirculating-ball steering till now. That's where my steering jerk and bump steer is coming from. I'm starting to understand this whole X thing now =)
