Which Bilstein 5100 shocks??? - 31/08/13 03:43 PM

I have a stock 06' Off Road and am replacing the shocks with 5100s. I see a lot of people recommending the ones for a lifted truck. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the longer shock? Most of my driving is on road, so I prefer a better ride. I've also pulled a trailer occasionally. Thanks

If you don't have a lifted truck, don't use shocks for a lifted truck. They're built with more "stroke", but without more travel in the suspension they'll bottom out and rupture the housing.

Use the upgraded version of your direct replacement shock.

I have an '08 Xterra SE 4WD.
I recently replaced my OEM shocks with Bilstein 4600 series shocks.
I bought them from Summit Racing, the cheapest on-line price I could find and it included free shipping. I believe these are the recommended replacement shocks if you don't have a lifted SUV. I have been very pleased with my new Bilstein shocks.

I'm up to 112,000 miles recently.

This is not necessarily true.

If the compressed length is short enough, this won't happen.

For example, on the 2000 - 2004 X's the shocks for the 3" SL fit the stock X just fine.

UNLESS the kit says you need a spacer or bumpstop extension, etc, to LIMIT the up travel...the shocks for a lifted truck HAVE TO be able to get short enough to fully compress, as the suspension of a lifted truck compresses to the SAME POINT as a non-lifted truck.

I tend to play it safe and MEASURE my upper/lower shock mount distances for both fully stuffed and fully drooped, to see what the shock must be able to allow. I typically add a buffer of added compression to account for stop squish, etc, and for over extension with leaf oscillation, etc.

For the X's, thus far, the lift kit shocks HAVE fit the non-lifted X's.

Of course, if you don't WANT the added wheel travel...its a moot point.
