Replacing 3156 & 3157 bulbs with LED's - 07/02/07 12:50 PM

I was seriously thinking of replacing the brake & turn signal light bulbs, 3156 & 3157 with their respective 3156LED & 3157LED due to their increased brightness and longer life. Anyone tried this on their 2005 - 2007 Xterra's .

Thanks for any info in advance.

Just a note, you can replace the brake lights with the LED light, but you have to add a resistor to the turn signal lights or they with flash very very quickly.

These bulbs can be usually found at Wallymart. I
picked up 3 pairs a few months ago. They were
around $3 per pair I believe.

Wallymart also carries the 194 bulb of this kind as
well-- ones for the license plate size. You should
check there before paying double on ebay.

As far as 3156 and 3157, I don't think it matters
much. I'm using 3156 (X comes with 3157?), and
they work fine. Could be wrong but I believe the
numbers have something to do with the brightness
of the bulb??

I've changed my rear signals to LEDs. I also installed two 6-OHM 50-Watt resistors for each signal to prevent the rapid flashing.

as far as replacing the amber bulbs inside the headlights with LED's, i've tried 2 different brands with no luck. LED's seem to only have one mode and work fine as turn signals. the original 3157's have 2 coils though: one for the parking mode and the bright one for turn signals. anyway, the both LED replacements i've attempted to install have burnt out my 10A Illumination fuse, so after putting the originals back in i got nothing in parking mode.

has anyone figured this out? is there a brand of LED's that can handle the dimmed mode?

3156 bulbs have only one filament (2 wires), while 3157 have two filaments (4 wires). 3156 are typically marker lamps or turn signals, while 3157's are for combo tail/brake light (or marker/turn signal, as on the Xterra) applications.

Try the 3157's from Superbrightleds.com
