Manual S 4x4 Gearbox Growling - 07/10/05 03:40 PM

I just bought an '05 S 4x4 w/ 6MT. Every time I shift above 3k, the motor or gearbox 'growls'. Its not a metal on metal sound, and its not the sound of the motor spinning down. The sound starts the second I put the clutch to the floor.

At first I thought maybe I wasn't letting off the gas completely before I disengaged the clutch, but after a couple of very deliberate shifts, it was still doing it.

I've been short shifting it in the mean time, but has any one else experience this?

TIA,
M

Yeah, I'm getting the same thing.....sort of a swooshing sound. Thought at first I was slipping the clutch a little, but not the case. I'm not worried about it.

Well I just went for another drive. The sound definately occurs when I unload the motor (i.e. disengage the clutch) and it decreases in pitch at the same rate as the motor spins down (contrary to my original post)

Maybe I'm just hearing the motor? It's very noticable. Anyone else get this sound?

OK, After reading your post I was paying attention tonight driving into Phoenix for First Friday; what I noticed was, as I depressed the clutch and let my foot off the gas, the RPM's were nudging upward....just barely....before dropping down for my upshift. So, it appears it's just as matter of timing....letting up on the gas a little quicker as you depress the clutch. Worked for me and got rid of the growl. It's something I'm gonna have to work on 'til it becomes automatic, but that did the trick.

Throw out berring?

Mine makes a WHINE when shifting at higher rpm's, 5,000+. At the price of gas that is not happening too much.
