How to determine Transponder Keys - 17/07/08 01:21 PM

Can't seem to find this topic on the forum. I have an '02 xe. How can I find out if my keys have the transponder chip or not, or did they even come out with them on this year?

I can think of one cheap sure fired way to find out. Go to the local hardware store and have a copy made. Try to start the truck. If it needs the chip, it'll let you know.

You could always take it to the dealer. I need to get an additional key made as well. I also have key fobs from my '05 that look the same, but don't know if they can be programmed to my '03. Doubt it, but at over $100 each, it'll be worth the try. Just haven't had time.

Good luck!

I do believe the transponder keys were used starting in 05.

I have a '03 SE/SC all options (should have transponder key).

I went to Lowes, they couldn't make me a copy, they didn't have a match to the key, they don't stock it, the guy said its a transponder key thats why they don't carry them.

Called dealership, they said yes its a transponder key. I can't remember how much they wanted for a spare $50+

Went to Home Depot, they made me a cheap regular spare for $1. Tried it works.

No need to waste money on a transponder, that doesn't work, or isn't installed. Same BS from the dealership as usual.

Took it to the dealer today, the answer i got from the service department was, "it might have it, it might not...but it probably does." They told me to go to parts. The parts guy looks at the key and says "I have no way of telling you if there's a chip or not"...thanks very little!

Anyways took it to a key place, they cut it, ignition works, no chip present. Done. Thanks for everyone's input.
