I like the plasma pictures smile
But, all these SAS projects could very well shorten my 1 year out plans for the SAS...specially if I can find an axel

Looks great.

Moab is going to be a whole lot more interesting this year. Last year we had 3 SAS Xterras and one SAS Pathfinder. This year we are going to have a bunch of SAS trucks as well as a number of other creative mods.

Is your tie rod setup custom?

Take Care,

Yeah the tie rod setup is a HD custom put together at the shop.

Since it sits out there I wanted something a little beefier.

Kev, does All Phase sell that steering as a kit? I need to do something for my axle as well.

We can make that system for your rig at a fairly economical price. There are two ways to go about it. One is to use the bigger thinner wall tubing, like on the pic, and weld the ends on. The other is to get tubing with the correct inner diameter to thread directly in the tubing for heim joint. This tubing tends have a smaller diameter and thicker walls. Either way works awesome.

We can get the tubing at the local metal supply at about 60% the cost of the 4wd shops and the correct taps(left and right thread)just happen to be in my tool box. Poison spyder sells the threaded ends for $12 each and heims run about $30.

Kev, Being you truck is a DD, you may think about installing some of THESE , they will protect the heims from the daily grime you get out in the mountains.

Cool... Thanks Ryan they will be ordered up ASAP.

Allen... All Phase says they make em all the time.

Damn, I guess I need to move up to Colorado. All you fellas up there seem to have a ton of cash to sink into your rigs. AND the time off work to go enjoy them. I can't seem to compute that. confused I hate you guys! [Finger]

Re: Hmmm SAS - 03/04/06 06:58 AM

i just dropped my truck off for the SAS too. i like the tie rod set up but where is your draglink going to mount. are you fabbing up the inverted T hook up to it?

what size tires are you going to go with?
Posted by: Anonymous

Re: Hmmm SAS - 03/04/06 10:32 AM

Drag link we will sand off a spot and weld something on... may go custom all the way to the pitman arm. May use the Calmini also should have it al figured out tommorrow.

Tire size not tottally sure yet see how it sits when it is all done, check the clearances while turned. I also have to keep in mind the offset wheels.

Re: Hmmm SAS - 03/04/06 10:38 AM

Here are two ways to hook it up...

Under knuckle

Over Knuckle
Posted by: Xtoolbox

Re: Hmmm SAS - 03/04/06 11:06 AM

I would think Over Knuckle would give you a better angle not to mention more clearance if it doesn’t interfere with anything else?

Might as well go custom all the way since the CALMINI adapter and supplied Chevy Tie rod is kind of pain for alignment because of the threading. Although the stock Pitman may need to be reamed to fit the stud.

Did you leave the knuckles stock alone or ream those for the custom tie rod?

Re: Hmmm SAS - 04/04/06 05:29 PM

90% Done....

Well basically done. Drive shaft did not make it so I will put that on Thurs or Friday after it gets here.

We went custom and over the knuckle to keep the clearance below the axle. Tie Rod is .25 inch thick metal with heims. Drag link is slightly thinner metal with heims.

Can someone take a pic of the clearance between the exhaust and skid. MAN does that look tight.

Pics coming soon.

Holy crap! [ThumbsUp]

You went with revolvers too? How level does it sit and with what rear springs? The Calminis? Articulation is going to be sick!

Great job; I love seeing stuff like this.

Re: Hmmm SAS - 05/04/06 04:34 AM

do you have a 2"BL and 33's on there?

do you think your drag link should sit on top of the pitman arm? it's not in line with your trac bar.

looks sweet.

Re: Hmmm SAS - 05/04/06 06:30 AM

Kev that looks awesome!!! Can't wait to be part of giving that blue some character (rock dings, scratches, etc). Hopefully this will be a good summer of wheeling! laugh

"do you think your drag link should sit on top of the pitman arm? it's not in line with your trac bar."

The fellas doing his work are fairly skookum at building these rigs. Maybe putting it on the topside of the pitman will exceed the heim's limits at full extension. However, it does make a huge difference making the trac bar and the drag link parallel. Otherwise, every time you hit a bump the steering wheel will have to be moved to keep the truck going straight (bump-steer).

examples:

Not lined up (the top two links)

Closer to lined up

Drag link is actually under the pitman you may be looking at the pic of the knuckle setup.

Yep 33s and the 2" body lift.

i'm not questioning the shops skills but as you mentioned bump steer and turning radius can be an issue if they are not parallel with one another. just an opinion. no attacking from here.

Re: Hmmm SAS - 05/04/06 07:52 AM

Hey Kev,

I'm new to the X. I come from a Jeep background and I am familiar with the Revolver Shackles. On a Jeep Wrangler (YJ) the hinge of the revolver shackle should point toward the axle. This goes for a front or rear application. Yours is pointing away. This may be correct for the your application but it goes against the basic design as I understand it. It's worth double checking. Here is a pic on the rear of a Wrangler.

WOW!!!

Note to self: Do not answer any question that requires more effort than farting if you are tired and really need a cup of coffee.

Oh and thats the way it is suggested... plus most of what I have read says you want the drag link as close to horizontal as possible.

Yep I thought it was suspicious from the beggining with the zerk sticking out the back. Then I stopped on the way home and eyed another set and I will get em switched up.

Re: Hmmm SAS - 14/04/06 01:47 PM

how's your steering, turning radius and brakes performing.
Posted by: Anonymous

Re: Hmmm SAS - 14/04/06 02:19 PM

Steering is great... it is alot easier to turn the bigger tires when aired down. I do have a little bump steer, but once again I got used to it. Maybe raising the track bar a little would fix it. Or a steering stabilizer.

Turning radius is about the same I just have to turn a little faster than before.

Brakes took a bit of getting used to.. but that is the difference of 20 years of technology. They felt soft at first but after I got used to the fact that I had to depress the pedal a little further I was fine.

actually it is recommended that the drag link is on top of the PA. i was also going to install mine below but the taper is too small. when we called calmini about it the said that it works best on top. so now its on top. turning radius is good too.
