Just need to know if we need to do anything extra to the Xterra when cleaning it up after a trip out in some deep mud and water. I remember reading some posts way back about water possibly getting trapped in the wheel bearings and the brakes needing to be repacked ????

It was five hours of pretty continuous mud and water, sometimes very deep, definately past the hubs. However, it was a limited experience, not to be duplicated for some time again.

Do we need to do anything other than some regular after-offroad- maintenace measures?

Heather

Minimum would be to repack the berings in the front hubs. Also have them check the CV joints.

Depending on how deep you went.. some other things you might want to do:

Change all your fluids (oil, transmission. differential).
Spray out alternator to make sure that there is not any mud trapped in it.
Check your distributor to make sure it is happy.
Clean all your door seals.
Check to see if there is any mud in your steering links and clean out the front skid plate.
Clean your engine compartment (assuming you were going fast through the mud)

There.. that should cover most everthing.

Nissan can. But I'm looking into doing it myself.

How would you go about doing that?

First, you take off the tire.....

There will be a How-To soon from Warmonger. It really isn't that difficult, however, it is more difficult than an oil change. If youre going to begin working on your truck, I would consider starting with the basics. Purchase an automotive repair do-it-yourself guide.

Haynes just released their Frontier/Pathfinder/Xterra repair book. It's #72031, available in stores soon I suppose, but by phone now:

Tennessee - 1-800-242-4637

Got mine yesterday, looks pretty good.

Ive never heard of having to repack your bearings after deep water driving... Its a sealed bearing, same with the CVs (besides, its something like $100 to repack them)... Only needs service at a specified interval because of wear and tear, usually when changing your brake pads. However, you definitely need to get the driveshaft joints lubed up after everytime, they are exposed to water.

The brakes only need to be applied a couple of times after water driving to be dried. If your driving through thick mud, then I would throw some clean water on them to get the thick pebbles off the rotor.

I agree teen...you shouldn't have to have the bearings repacked except for regular wear and tear. Just make sure you apply the brakes a couple of times after you leave the water hole...you would hate to need them and not have them.

Just to clarify the whole repack your front bearings..

From the manual page 9-7 Maintenance

concerning bearing repacking..

"if operating frequently in water, replace grease every 3,750 miles (6,000 km) or 3 months"

So yes.. you need to repack your bearings if you are doing water crossings.

Even the best sealed components have a nasty habit of sucking in water (or air) when rapidly cooled (such as when dunking in water). Its the whole temperature/density thing. Even your diff's, transfer case, and tranny are susceptible to this. The X does not have externally vented components, whereas some hard-core off-road vehicles have vent lines run to a high point (like a snorkel). Because of this, the fluids will become contaminated with water whenever you drive through water. You should always change ALL fluids, greases, etc... that were below water level when you do a water crossing. As for not doing it because its expensive, that's your call. It'll be alot cheaper to swap fluids now than to replace components later. Having said that, I'm still waiting for another pay check before I can swap mine... (you gotta do what you gotta do...)

Ive never tried working on the transmission, but when you say the trans is vented, where are the vent locations? Im assuming the top of the tranny somewhere...just curious if its an open tube or what? Thanks in advance,
John

I know I've seen the front vent tube, but I couldn't follow it all the way up. Haven't looked at the rear, but that will be the easier one to spot.

The rear diff breather runs up to the frame, as OffroadX said it's really easy to spot...just look directly above the diff.

/me eats his words... Well I'll be damned. OK, so it IS vented, but it is not vented high. If you are driving in deep water, it will still probably suck water. How about a vent tube extension, Carlton?

you can drill a hole in the body and bring the tube inside the cab.
