What's the ground clearance on our Xterras? I was looking through the brochure but didn't find it.

8 to 9 inches give or take, measured to random locations on the vehicle.

Nissan changes it constantly based on tire size and false claims from Toyota.

Nissanews says 9.2 inches for your 2WD SE, but that's incorrect. Place a tape measure under your rear diff, it's the lowest part of the vehicle.

what does that mean, false claims from toyota?
So it's about 8 1/2 to the lowest part of the truck?

Also could you delete the redundant thread- accidentally did that.

Toyota claims 12 inches of ground clearance for the Tacoma, which is physically impossible.

The largest tire they offer is 30.5 inches in diameter. Half of that would be the center of the rear axle at probably 14 inches off the ground (remember tires flex).

Their rear differential holds an 8 inch ring gear, with clearance and material of the diff itself, call it 10 inches in diameter. Take half of that away from 14 inches and you get a maximum 9 inches or so to the bottom of the diff.

I assume Toyota measures ground clearance by driving over a very narrow object and making it clear only the highest possibly spots under the truck. Whatever it takes to sell them.

Edit:

I just found their definition...

Ground Clearance
The distance between the lowest point on the vehicle and level ground.

I guess they don't include the rear diff.

The new 4Runner has 9.2 inches so maybe they measure the rear diff now?
They say 12 with P265/70R16 on the Taco- I wonder how they came up with 12"?

So we should measure it from the bottom of our tires laugh

Toyota is stupid, they give two measurements for their vehicles. One that's "general", I think measured from the bottom of the axel tubing. The other is the "absolute", measured from the diff. For example, the Sequoia is quoted as 11.2 inches or something, but then toyota tells you it's 9.1 or something under the differential.

But then again, I'm sure the Hummer H1 is not 17 inches at the absolute lowest point. I think they measured it from the center between the two wheels. And since it has independent suspension, it's very high in the center.
