From "Guide to Northern California Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails"
Trail: Peligreen Jeepway

Location: East of Red Bluff, southeast of Paynes Creek

Difficulty: Moderate. After a well-graded forest road, the trail narrows to a rough, one-lane path over hilly, remote terrain. Portions of the route are rocky and bone jarring. Other portions can be slick and muddy if wet. Steep in places with loose rock, but there are no difficult obstacles. The first part of Jeepway passes through a burned out area where fallen trees have blocked the route in several places. Bypasses have formed but they are faint and route finding can be challenging at times. Tight brush in places may scratch vehicle. Suitable for any seasoned, high-clearance 4-wheel-drive SUV. The trail sees little use, so don't count on help from passersby. Best driven in spring and fall.

Features: A long winding drive over a series of rugged volcanic ridges. Some drivers will find the area starkly beautiful; others, harsh and desolate. The route passes through the Tehama State Wildlife Area which is closed December through March. It is also closed the last week in October for hunting season when a permit is required.

Time & Distance: The entire unpaved loop measures 36 miles, of which 24 miles are easy forest roads. Allow a full day.
Date: November 13th & 14th
Elevation: Approx. 2,000 ft - 3,300 ft.

This trail is ranked in just about the middle of the moderate trails listed in the book. The easiest of the Moderate trails is Eagle Peak, which a stock Xterra w/ step rails has no problem. And, the difficult side of Moderate trails is Bear Valley Loop, which did require a stock Xterra to take off flaps and rails.... So, I think that Peligreen Jeepway would require a stock Xterra to take off your flaps and rails, but that should be it....of course, with careful driving is a must, anyway... wink This trail should be perfect for those who want to go camping/off-roading in your stock Xterras, and I'm sure those w/ modified Xterra would have a great time as well.

There is a (very) primitive camp site almost half way of the trail: Black Oak Grove Camp Ground. This is likely to be our camping spot.

I've contacted Fish & Game a couple of weeks ago regarding the hunting season... As long as we run this trail in Nov., we're okay. smile (No one should be shooting at colorful Xterras, anyway laugh ) And, Nov. 6th & 7th might seem like a better time for some since Hell Hole run is on Oct. 23rd & 24th, but I have a personal reason to be taking 6&7 weekend off....so, sorry if you're counting on that weekend for camping. :p

Oh...Only thing that is going to stop us from going on this trip would be...weather. ...Of course. [LOL]

I don't have the meeting time/locations clearly set, yet, but I'll post it as soon as I sort that out.

Who's up for it? Please post any questions you might have in this thread.

I am definately going to try and make it to this. Had this trail circled in my book for some time now. Not sure if I will do it as a day run or camp....I will play it by ear at this point:

Snow...I'm willing to experience camping in snow once. But, because of the elevation, I don't think we'll get to see any snow... I think it's more like...rain. Just imagining about setting up a tent on muddy ground is... [Uh Oh !]

The East end of the trail is about 15 minutes from my buddys hunting cabin, and we have had snow there before.. Plan on a VERY earily departure from the bay area.. Reno may eb closer.. (I don't know where the west end is.. East end takes about 6 hours to get there in winter)

BTW Count me in on this one.. if my A-arms ever get here..

From napa to red bluff is 2 1/2 hours and at least another 1 1/2 to the east trail head better way of starting. The trail ends in the Tehema wilderness once there you can leave the long way out out or go the short way which is a fun trail and is stock friendly you will need 4wheel drive up this section. Red bluff is the last area to gas up. Im going ask for the weekend off. I gotta run this trail been there during hunting season and it looks good. Put me as a question mark for going.

Red Bluff to the trail head in the book is about 30 miles and is paved all the way... Well, that's what the book say. Let's hope that it won't really take us 1 1/2 hours to the trail head. Besides, we might be talking about 2 different locations as "trail head." wink

I found some more information about the trail:

http://www.mtbr.com/trails/California-Allotherareas/Peligreen-GrapevineTrail.html

GPS waypoint for the campground:

http://wayhoo.com/index/a/wdet/wid/93565/waypoint/Black+Oak+Grove/ste/California/

BTW, San Jose to Paynes Creek (which is east of Red Bluff) is about a 4-hour drive (244 mi). Just FYI.

Also, do you want to borrow my PETT toilet for the trip? It might be more comfortable than digging a hole.

I forgot, we are alwayse hauling a trailer.. 55mph sucks on I5.. at 70 it would ba faster, once you get east of Red Bluff i think it is all 55mph max to paynes creek, with a few slower spots aroung Red Bluff..

It is paved up through paynes creek till you get to the tehema wild life refuge. Then it is a dirt road that is in pretty good condition just very bouncy so you want to air down. Depending on which route you go in the tehema wildlife refuge one way is much shorter and has nice trail down 4wheel drive needed. That is if we enter from the west. If we enter the east you still have a dirt road for about hour. Pretty smooth road. Count me in I got the weekend off. I have a map some where of the tehema wildlife I will see If I can find.

I plan to hit the trail from Paynes Creek to the east side...clockwise on the loop (or semi-loop).

That is good to know because she was already assuming she would be the only one.

Does anyone know any more details about this camp spot we plan on staying at? Like you said it is primitive so I am already assuming pack in pack out....no water....no bathrooms. Are there actual designated spots?

Also is anyone else bringing their dog? I am trying to decide whether or not to bring my Lab pup along. Just curious

From Backcountry Adventure: Northern California
The USFS map shows an undeveloped camping area here; there are no facilities, but it is possible to find a pleasant shady campsite.
So, once we get there, we should be able to recognize this so-called campground. And, if you need to go, there are two options: shovel or a PETT as Dean posted earlier. The PET or something similar would be the best way to go when environmental impacts are concerned, but I have a shovel at this point. :p

A Lab pup? Sure... I don't know if anyone else has a dog, though...

Yeah I don't have a problem using the shovel method as long as I know that is my only option going in it won't be a problem metally. lol laugh

I have spent a week out in the Black Rock desert before so I got a lot of practice with the shovel method there. eek

1. Testing my CB radio...this will be early next week.
2. Carrying Firewood...again :p

However, running around to get the firewood before the trip is becoming a pain. Kevin, since you've been to the area, do you know if the area near the camp ground can possibly provide us enough firewood (can we collect enough from the ground)?

You start in a game refuge which is mostly oaks and then head up. Depends on where we camp the higher the more wood there is.I will bring a chainsaw so cutting wood isnt a problem. I can also bring firewood just so we have some dry wood burn with. I dont think we should have a problem finding wood up there.

Weather forecast is looking good for the next 10-days for Paynes Creek so far... smile

I haven't decided meeting times yet, but.. I think I'm going list the following for meeting places.

1. Montgomery Ward parking lot, off of I-680, Monument Blvd exit
2. Safeway in Corning
3. Black Oak Grove Campground on the trail

Safeway
600 Edith St.
Corning, CA 96021
ph: (530) 824-2467

Since I'm lazy, I'll work on the meeting time at each location later, later on this week...or next. laugh

Oh, and if anyone who happens to be thinking about showing up at the campground...

Quote:
from the book I have (again)
To Get there: from Highways 99 and 36 east of Red Bluff, take Hwy 36 east in the direction of Lassen Volcanic National Park. After 20 miles, turn right on Paynes Creek Loop at mile marker 64. Go 0.4 miles and turn right on Plum Creek Road just after Paynes Creek Store. Follow paved road 8.3 miles to Ponderosa Way (F.S. Road 28N29, also County Road 707B).

Trail Description: Reset your odometer and turn right on Pnderosa Way. Stay on this wide gravel road as it winds south through scenic forest. Cross a wooden bridge at 9.6 miles. Stay on the main road as it curves slightly to the right at 11.7 miles where F.S. 28N29F crooses. Turn right at 12.6 miles at a sign for Peligreen Jeep Trail marked as F.S. 28N57.

Reset your odometer as you turn right. Bear left at 0.7 miles then at 1.4 miles, turn right at another sign for the Peligreen Jeep Tral . This route drops downhill into a fire-damaged canyon where many dead trees have fallen across the trail. (If you wish to avoid this part of the route, you can continue straight on a longer but easier loop around the canyon.) The first blockage of the trail is at 1.8 miles. Detour around on the left side and rejoin the trail within 0.1 miles, then bear left downhill. Weave your way around other smaller blockages as the trail gradually swings right downhill. You reach bottom at 2.2 and begin to climb as the trail becomes more defined. A road goes right at 2.8 miles but don't turn yet. Continue just a bit farther to 2.9 miles where you'll see a large sign for Rancheria Hiking Trail straight ahead.

Reset your odometer and turn right at above sign. Weave around some big trees as the trail follows along a fence bordering the Ishi Wilderness. Stay left around a large log blocking the trail at 0.4 miles. This is the site of Peligreen Place but nothing remains. The road weaves uphill within sight of the wilderness boundary. Turn left at 1.3 miles where a faint trail goes right uphill along Indian Ridge. Pass through a fence opening at 1.5 miles. More fence openings will follow. Make a steep, rocky climb at 2.8 miles. Weave uphill through Black Oak Grove Campground at 3.2 miles. Not much here except a few fire rings and shade...

Corning isnt a necessary meeting place. Red bluff would be much better. Its the last place to fill up gas. As you exit the second exit and make a right there is a holiday grocery store on the left. I know you guys like your safeways laugh But to stop in corning which is about 20 miles from red bluff doesnt make sense. I just realized you plan on running this trial east to west [LOL] Not all the signs are there for the trail. The only sign is at the begining of the trail. So people wanting to join late its not recommened Unless you know the area. We will probably want to leave red bluff no latter then 11:00 So we start the trail by 12:30 ish and and still have daylight on the trail.

confused Running from east to west is funny for some reason? confused Why doesn't make sense? It's only 20 miles right? Trail itself is only 36 miles. It's about 60 miles to unpaved section from Corning (1st 1/4 of a tank), run the trail and back to the pavement (2/3 of a tank gone). There should be plenty of gas left in the tank to get back to Red Bluff or Corning or wherever... Besides, Pleasant Hill to Corning is about 150 miles/2 hour 15 min. It's a good time to take a break. Some of us are also driving another hour before getting to Pleasant Hill.

Anyway, since we all have to drive a good distance, we'll be stopping at Safeway only for a (rest room) break. Please do all your grocery shopping before the trip to shorten stopping time at each location.

0800 Meet at Montgomery Ward in Pleasant Hill
1015 Arrive at/Meet Safeway in Corning (30 min. max break)
1045 Leave Safeway in Corning
1115 Arrive at Red Bluff for gas stop (15 min.)
1130 Leave Red Bluff for Paynes Creek
1210 Arrive at Paynes Creek
1240 Arrive at the Trail head

This is not a final... If a majority wants to skip stopping at Corning, we can. If a majority wants to fill a tank in Corning and skip Red Bluff, we can.

And, we don't have to run the trail from east to west, either. I planned it that way just because that's how the book shows the route. If someone is willing to lead us all from the other way, I'm okay with that, too.

east to west is fine its probably easier because your heading down hill most of the time. And as for gas My 4cyl tank doesnt hold as much as you guys but that is all right I can bring an extra can. meeting at safe way in corning is fine with me then.

A bit easier is good...for a group of 7 or 8 trucks. smile More challenging going uphill sounds fun, but we wouldn't have much time to spend at each obstacles, either.

Well, that's still a tentative schedule. We can still change things around. Besides, I do agree that it is a good idea to fill a tank at the nearest location to the trail. Your tank might be a bit smaller than ours, but we also have Andy whose truck consume gas faster than other 6-cyl (because of his 33" tires). laugh

Robert, you shouldn't have to backtrack... I'll give you a call ahead, and we can meet on the road... We should be just fine...

If anyone is interested, I took a picture of the map off of the book.

outbkjack you have a p.m.

just a note to all the stockers planning on attending this trip... I (being a stocker myself) was informed that it would be a good idea to remove your step rails and mud flaps before this trip!

Good point. That would probably be a good idea. smile

Some of you might be already 4-wheeling for a while, and know all the rules and etiquette. But, please read the pages from the link below thoroughly if you have never read the pages before.

The site lists very good information clearly. If you're new to the sport, it is very important to know. If you already knew, it's still good to re-read and refresh your memories. wink

Required Reading Material before the trip . laugh

Depending on polarbear I will hook up with him and catch you guys as you pass susuin If he cant go I will meet you guys at the safeway corning. The meeting times should work right just as long we are on time. With it getting dark early It gives us about 4hrs to do 3 miles on the trail and still have a little light left to set up camp. It shouldnt take that long but just in case.

Akio- just mark a waypoint on your GPS. That coordinate is on the trail:

I know...it's a very simple to find out where he meant, but why do I have to do that?

That wasn't the point. I enjoy going out, hitting a trail, camping, etc. I wanted share this opportunity to others who are also interested in doing the same or similar things. I spent my time looking up information, calling around, putting schedules together, etc. for everyone...voluntarily.

I asked a simple question, and what I received was a smart a$$ answer. Why not just "on the trail" or "at the campground"? If I wanted some twised answers, I would have asked everyone to make it more time-consuming for me to figure out in the 1st place.

Anyway, I'm just explaining why I didn't look up the coordinates, and only just posted my response, Dean... Nothing against you. smile

Hey, I saw that the weather forecast for Sunday is really wet and stormy. If it was just me I would camp with you guys but I am bringing my 4 year old son on this trip so we won't be camping overnight. We plan on leaving Saturday so as long as we can make it back to the head of the trail alright; we're good. wink

What weather forecast are you looking? According to weather.com, the forecast for the Paynes Creek is 30% few shower for Sat. and Sun. 30% chances are typically not even enough rain to get the ground wet very much. The campground is really half way through from east or west side of the trail... It might be a bit difficult to get back to the pavement in the dark...but what do I know? Kevin or Chris, please confirm how easy/difficult for Ron to turn around and go back out...when it's getting dark...

And...how come everyone's copying the whole thing, instead of just meeting location part? confused

I was curious where those coordinates were, which is why I looked them up. I'm in agreement with you that plain English is a better response than cryptic GPS coordinates. I also agree that Chris' sense of humor may not necessarily elicit all smiles from his audience. No need to defend yourself. wink

I think you are confused, I usually run the runningboards to protected the sliders. And the 33" tires are "mud distributors". smile

Hey SLOMATT,

I concur with your previous statement...

As with yours, my tires are "Bi-Directional Mud Flingers"

Makes for a very messy vehicle at the end of a really muddy trip...YEA [ThumbsUp] [ThumbsUp] [ThumbsUp] [Smoking]

I wouldnt recommend driving out at night unless you have knowledge of the area It really isnt hard getting out but it is a long enough drive out . The other thing going back up the trail by your self I wouldnt recommend. And the forcast Ive seen is a chance of rain on sun. A few us might want to run the trail up hill just to escort you out for fun laugh

A part of me just wanting to sit next to the fire and chill out... The other part of me wanting to go for a night run... Wow.... That's a very dangerously tempting idea... :p

The gps that I gave are not on the trail, they are for my buddys cabin I will be at friday night, and saturday morning.. So if I don't respond on the frs, someone drop by smile and look for my truck..
The location is from memory, off a map.. should be within 100 to 200 feet tho..

As far as leaving at night, once you get past the trailhead, it is (almost) car driveable (if it is dry, it is car driveable).. getting to the trailhead.. that takes 3 to 4 hours going downhill, you might as well try to run it in a day.. at least then if you get stuck we will find you on sunday.. head back, we may notice you missing monday when you don't respond on XOC. [Freak] .

I didnt know there were any cabins near the trail head. Matter of fact Ive never seen any cabins there. The last homes were at the begining of the road. Unless you are talking about the cabin on the road. I agree the campire will be nice and warm, And is my first choice laugh But If need be I would escort him up the hill.

I too am thinking about driving back out in the evening and making it a day trip....and since we are both from the Sacto area it kinda makes sense......would make for a VERY long day though. I have to think about this.

I have been watching the weather very closely up in this area for the coming weekend. According to many reports they are all pretty certain we will get some rain this weekend. Is this the type of trail that is safe to do so in the rain and or after a good size rain? Most of the trail books I have recommend not using them in rainy conditions for safety and maintenance of the trail?

I supposed people who have traveled this trail in the past can speak to its possible dificulty in the rain and or muddy conditions. Coming with a stock vehicle I have to admit I feel a bit uneasy about it.

I wouldnt worry to much they are saying a chance of rain on sun. The part of the trail Ive been on was mostly rocky and gravely. We are heading down hill so it should even be easier. I know down in the refuge its mostly rocky road very easy drive if its wet and muddy. Dont worry some of us also have winches so it shouldnt be a problem.

The refuge road is fine wet.. it gets a little "fun" with snow tho... mainly at the sharp right turns on the way in, you turn & head uphill.. loads of fun with trailers in the snow..
mostly packed cinder with a little mud on top for good measure.. climbing over wet rocks should be fun tho..

how was the trip? wish i could have made it down for it!

i dont really know of any "jeep trails" around this area. i do know of some good roads that will take you in to some nice lakes. and some good roads on the mountin. plus a few places to just go play. most of the roads are snowed in this time of the year. but snows fun too!!! untill you get stuck smile

Trail was fun. Very stock freindly trail minus steprails and flaps. I want to run up hill next time.

The trail difficulty was just as described in the book. As Kevin mentioned it before the trip, we ran the trail high to lower elevation. The gravity helped us go through many sections much easier and faster. Most of it was rocky, and lots of puddles...as you can see in the pictures. (will be posted soon.)

The timing could not have been any better. It was cold but not extremely. There was no drop of rain. And, probably no one else camping anywhere near us. There were even firewoods piled up and waiting for us. laugh

When moving fast w/ a very small group, you an get the the campground in 1 hour from where the trail sign was. And, about 1.5 hours from the campground to the end of the trail.

This trip happened to be one of the most stress free camping trip I have done. smile

Thanks everyone for joining, and making this trip fun. [Wave]

Sorry I missed saying bye to some of you on the way out after airing up but we had to get home as soon as we could.

I just wanted to thank AKIO for organizing a great year end run (for me at least) ...... like he said great stress free trail and great camping.......my wife and I had a great time.

Now to start buffing that complementary pinstriping out due to Mr. and Mrs. Manzanita wink

Great to meet everyone as well....hope to see you again soon

We both had a GREAT time......except for my wife not feeling well Sun morning from probably my BBQ cooking Sat night. LOL She was better by lunch though. So Akio how was that burger? ;-)

By the way I apologize to all for the hour delay in getting my battery situation taken care of. Andy thanks for the help wrenching out the old and slapping in the beautiful new red top. And Ron thanks for the jump that got me down the road and to the red top.

Thanks to Huey, Akio, and Brian for helping us get off the trail on the first night. We had a good time as well and my 4 year old loved it.

You are welcome Slamson for helping you out with the bad battery situation. I was picking my son up from daycare when mine gave out but mine wouldn't even hold a charge.

Polar Bear, I would be up for a little snowboard trip. We are going this weekend to Northstar and it will be Zachary's first lesson. Let me know if you can put a trip together.

Don't worry about that... We still had a plenty of time to get to the campsite in day light. It was also better to take care of it sooner than trying to jump start it on the trail every time you stop the motor. wink

You liked the mud, didn't you? wink If Kevin somehow made Mike (Tolley) finish his Samurai, they might run the same trail going uphill in the spring. I think the mud will be even better then... laugh

Per mikes last post the sami is going up for sale.Wife wants a murano so he gets her pathfinder to modify. He realized the sami is to small of a vechile for the family to wheel in. I told him to make up his mind laugh . I want to run this trail up hill and also get ted out there next time. It was a fun trip. Will have to make it an early spring trip.
