Hey Guys, SCCX is planning a trip to Death Valley for our March run and thought we'd send an invite your way! I seriously think some of the NCXC are closer than most the SCCX members smile Hope to see some of you there, and stop by the forums!

Been a while since we had a DVNP run and this should be a good time of year so lets hear some ideas on area of interest, proposed routes, etc.

This will be more of an overland expedition type of run because of the distances and remoteness of some the trails so multiple day(s) and camping are best and you will need to stock supplies if you plan on running the full two days.

Most of the trails are stock 4x4 friendly, several are doable in 4x2, and some have some rock climbing so sliders and upgraded tires are recommended.

These are my ideas for the run:

Meet in Baker of I-15 9am.

Sat 3/25:

Echo Canyon (easy, 9 miles 1 hr)
The trail road begins two miles east of Furnace Creek Inn along Highway 190. The road tends to have deep gravel and is quite rocky 3 miles from the highway (4X4 required). The Needle’s Eye, a natural arch, is located within the canyon narrows. The Inyo Mine is up the right fork 9 miles in and contains several old structures and remnants of mining equipment.

Funeral Mt. Range Trail (moderate, 25 miles, 2 hrs)
This is the continuation of the Echo canyon trail that continues past other old mines eventually becoming very rough 4x4 and features a challenging waterfall obstacle before exiting the park in Nevada.

Rhyolite Ghost Town / Titus Canyon (easy, 25 miles, 2.5 hrs)
This popular scenic road is ONE-WAY from east to west. To find the beginning of the drive, follow the highway toward Beatty, Nevada. Turn left 2.7 miles east of the park boundary. The road re-enters the park and winds through the Grapevine Mountains, then drops down through one of Death Valley’s most spectacular canyons.

Camping Sat night at Stovepipe Wells or Emigrant

Sun 3/26:

Take Emigrant Canyon Rd, Wildrose Rd to Ballarat

Pleasant Canyon / South Park Loop (Moderate, 24 miles, 6 hours)
The most exciting trail in the Park if you ask me for 300 to 7k and back down again with the best views of DV on top. Some great mine sites along the way, rocks to climb, shelf road to traverse, tight brush, water possible, etc.

After the trail we will exit toward Trona

DVNP park info:
http://www.nps.gov/deva/Expanded.htm

Trail(s) & GPS reference:
Backcounty Adventures: SoCal, Massey & Wilson
Desert #35: Pleasant Canyon Loop
Desert #38 & 39: Echo Canyon & Funeral Range Trail
Desert #40: Titus Canyon

Please post up if you’re interested or have other ideas or areas will might want to visit?

For those that don't want to wheel all day on saturday or rock climb you can take echo canyon back out and meet us at Titus Canyon later in the day. Both Titus and Echo can be done with a 4x2. Pleasant Cyn is 4x4 only with sliders, upgraded tires, and some lift recommend.

BTW I’ll be in AZ the 3rd week of the month so that’s one of the reasons why I would prefer the 4th weekend better not to mention it will be spring.. I’ll help out as much as I can planning the run but will its going to be a busy march month for me.

Brian

Guess it takes longer to get there than it looks. It is still a 6.5 hour drive for me, perhaps some of you have wanted to go there anyways smile

I don't see why this couldn't turn into a Nissan/Yota thing? You could share a base camp and have more leaders of varying levels for trails...

Yeah, that'd be cool but it sounds like you guys are going to different places. Considering how vast it is out there, you might not even see each other. But then again I haven't really read too much of either thread.

Don't see that it would matter if we DID see eachother.. It's not like we are going to have a turf war or somthing.

On a more serious note, Jason, I think they were saying we should meet up, not try to avoid each other.

yeah, these damn norcal xterras are always in my way here. I'll tell the yotatech DV group to be prepared to fight dirty (you know, unlock hubs on unsuspecting xterras, etc) [LOL] [LOL]

At least you don't have to worry about the bandit out there anymore.

Anyway, have fun out there guys.

Edit: speak of the devil, this just showed up. http://www.pahrumpvalleytimes.com/2006/02/24/news/bandit.html
