Hey guys and gals, our next club trip will be at Hollister on Dec 14th (weather permitting).

We will be using CB channel 14 and FRS channel 8 (I will follow up with a sub-code once I know everyone has them). The meeting spot will be the 4x4 obstacle course at 11am –12pm. Caravan meeting spots to follow.

Hollister is a great place for new club members to experience off-roading in a controlled environment and meet other club members as well. This is a stock friendly run with a recommendation that stock vehicles remove their factory step rails and lower mud flaps, though not absolutely necessary, there have been a few torn mud flaps and bent rails.

As always we will do a quick 101 on 4wheeling at the obstacle course for those that are new to the sport and then will continue on to run green and blue trails. From there we will possibly tackle a few black diamonds for the experienced or adventurous types.

For more info on Hollister go to http://www.hollisterhills.com/ directions to the park can be found on the website also.

Hey, what would you guys say to a joint xterra/toyota get together? I'm a moderator over at www.yotatech.com and we've got a lot of beginners over there that would benefit from a 101 on wheeling.

I'd completely understand if you guys want to keep this a Nissan only thing, though. smile

Just to show that Hollister really does have something for everyone, regardless of vehicle mods or experience...

This was taken on the obstacle course, right next to where we camped. Camping facilities are nicer than average there. We may opt to camp Sat night, waiting to get a better read on the weather.

do you have recovery gear??? (tow straps)those are always good to bring, also, it would be wise to take off your step rails & mud flaps to avoid any damage.
you don't HAVE to get a cb but having one would be nice, you can also get an frs which would be cheaper. anywho, welcome aboard!!! hollister is a great place for your first outing [ThumbsUp]

Yup, I'll bring along a nice kiln-dried pine 2x4. It's going to be taking the place of my front drive shaft.

Something like that. smile I've been enjoying the slightly increased gas milage without the drag from the front drive shaft. Going to install the new pinion yoke this week and then order the new shaft which should be in by the time we go to Hollister.

Sean- Departure time is pretty wide-open. Most folks tend to stick around for 3-4 hours, which usually gets us out of there before 4pm. Others may need to leave earlier, due to their longer highway travel time.

Depending on who's still around at the end of the day, we could go have dinner together at one of the local establishments in Hollister.

Everyone- BRING FOOD AND WATER 4-Wheeling makes you hungry! smile A typical pastime is to drive up to the highest point in the park (Hector Heights) and have lunch while we take in the view.

I'm going to send out an update email later on this, but for those that read the board...

You guys are more than welcome to arrive early or even go on Sat or do a two day trip (Ruger1022 will be there both days so get in contact with him if you like). The reason for the Sun 11-12pm meeting spot at the obsticle course is to allow those that would like to arrive early a chance to explore on their own and then just meet the group at 11. I also planned this hour becuase many of us are lazy and like to sleep in on Sun smile . We will probably hang out at the park till sundown (4pm) and I like Dean's idea about a group dinner (there's a great Mexican place in Hollister), but everyone is welcome to come and go as they please.

One other note. It seems like there is quite a large group going (10+ from our club, plus quite a few Toyotas) so I will need a few trail boss volunteers to help split the group up a bit. Let me know if you would like to lead a group (knowing the park is a must) and what difficulty you would like to lead (easy, med, hard).

From the yotatech side I think we've only got myself plus 2 more trucks, so far. I've only been to hollister a couple times and I'm still not really familiar with the trails.

Are you guys still going even if it rains?

Yesterday, the weather forecast for Sunday was 30%. Today, it is now 40%. I mean, it will be "mud-fest," though. [Uh Oh !]

Yes. I'm a wuss. I don't like muddy hills at Hollister much from some unpleasant experiences... :p

We all know you are a wuss Akio :p , just kidding wink .

But, that is a good point. I'm keeping an eye on the weather. Right now the trip is still on, but if there is more than a slight chance of heavy rain, then I guess we will need to reschedual or cancel the trip. frown

Yeah.... If it's raining, I'm out. Hollister soil is too greasy/slippery (and therefore dangerous) when it's wet, and it takes way too long to hose that stuff off the undercarriage after the fun is over.

I don't like the idea of having to do any kind of vehicle recovery in the rain, either.

(Yeah, I know.... [Crybaby] [Crybaby] [Crybaby] )

laugh

Rain or shine, We're in. Too much mud sucks, but I'm hoping it's only showers sun, sat should still be good. Anyone interested in sat?
MV

Also, I've been noticing the forcast change a bit, earlier it said rain, then no rain, now back to rain again... I really only trust it 'bout two days ahead...

Well the weather for Hollister has been looking so so... Keep an eye on it guys, but the trip is still on for now. smile

I'm going out of town tomorrow and will be back on Sat so I won't be able to post till then. Basically if the rain % goes up over 40% (with more than "few showers") then you probably won't see me on Sun. But, if it is 30% or less, I'll be there! smile Either way check the board on Sat afternoon/evening.

MV, hopefully we will be there, if not have fun and be safe in the rain. The mud there can get quite slick when it rains.

Our last few trips have been in slick mud, we're adapting. We've got rooms reserved at the Best Western in hollister, so we're there one way or another, even if it's just to sit around and swap stories and drink beer... I doubt I'll be taking the laptop, so won't be able to check in Sat night, so far weather looks good, and we've been consistantly getting less than predicted, so I feel good. If need be we should be reachable @(559) 786-3059. Hope to see you all Sun.

Yeah I have been in that Hollister mud before with my stock set up and after narrowly missing sliding into a few trees (and that was while driving very carefully) I think I will wuss out as well.

Will look for other runs:

Likely to be the last post before we leave. We're in for sat. only very heavy rain sun, or a total wuss out by everyone else, will keep us from going then as well( in the event of a total wuss out we may be forced to explore some BLM land on our way back home). I know it will be slippery, but where isn't this time of year? C'mon guys, I got a single woman with a stock '91 Jeep cherokee tellin' me she's equal to an X, and shes going... Y'all are going to make us look bad...Sun we should be joined by a 4-cyl lifted Wrangler... maybe it is just a Jeep thing... In any case, we'll stick to FRS ch 8, like mentioned before, and we'll be looking for you sun 11-12ish. Have a great weekend whether we see you or not...

The weather does look ugly for Sunday so far, but I'll wait and see.
Maybe I'll just go for a hour or two and stay away from the big hills and play on the flats, it's not very far away for me.
If I don't make it, have a good time, take pictures and don't forget your rubber boots. laugh
If I (and anyone else) does make it, we will still meet at the obstacle course at 11am –12pm.

So who on the list is still going? At least it won't be dusty! (BTW, do they shut down when it rains like Frank Raines does?)

Um, yeah, so...weather.com says 80% chance of rain on sunday. The hourly forecast says showers in the morning and rain during the day, but partly cloudy after 3pm.

It looks like the rain is supposed to lessen by the early afternoon. I'm still in, rain or shine. If it is raining, we can stay on the easier trails and play on the obstacle course seeing who can make it up the slick rock in the rain. If it gets really bad we can always sling a tarp between two rigs and hang out under there.

I've got family commitments in the morning, but I'll try to be at Hollister by noon. I'll look for you guys on the FRS.

...Did anyone says anything about sub-code? Or, Ch.8 w/o sub-code?

So the trip is still on rain or shine. It seems a few people want to go [Too much XOC] . So I will be there. I just checked the weather and it looks like rain all morning, so there will be plenty of mud, if it's too slick I'm going to stay away from hill climbs, but we can still play in the flat area and watch the crazies do the mud pit!

CB 14 (I don't have one) FRS 8 NO SUB-CODE.

I maybe a bit late, but will be there between 11:30 and 12:30 and hanging out at the obsticle course.

If you can't make it or don't want to play in the mud, I don't blame you... but Matt Y and I will be there and we will find a way to make it fun. laugh

I'm Ruger 1022's Mom posting for him per phone conversation. We are at Hollister. Had a great day. Excellent conditions. Don't know weather for Sunday, but after today will definitely be out there to see. Did several black diamond trails with our stock grabbers and long trails on the stock XJ. Look forward to see you guys, watch out for H2s.

sorry guys, but take my name off the list. I have an emergency and need to get my dog to a spinal surgeon in Santa Barbara, between that and fricking finals this next week we'll see how it goes. Have fun and beat some trails for me.

...catch ya on the flipside...
