Hi everybody, long time no see. Wow the forum has changed!

Having some issues with my X and thought I'd see if you had some answers.

First my harmonic balancer went out. $400 later....

Then I needed a new battery!

Now I see that my positive battery cable is falling apart. The guy at the battery shop said it's real expensive but we could cut it and get a cheaper one to work if we use the side post for the battery. I do take my X offroad quite a bit should I choose this option?

Please advise.

I also am worried about the timing belt now as they say it should be replaced at 60K, I'm at 82K.

Is there anyone who does work on the xterras that you could recommend or any or you that I could pay to do it?

I live in Wrightwood.

Thanks a bunch!

Danna

The timing belt would be my greatest worry. The battery cable should not be expensive. With your mechanics comments regarding the cable, you'd do well to find another mechanic. I wish I could recommend someone, but I know of noone in your area. Also, I'm not familiar with the first gen engine but, when changing the the belt the water pump is usually another thing to inspect and possibly replace as it's nearly the same R&R.

Recommended timing belt change interval is 105k miles, not 60k.

Yeah, As I stated...don't know the gen1 engines.
If the mechanic is pushing for the timing belt change as well...you really need to find a new mechanic.

Thanks! I can go to San Gabriel Valley and the Inland Empire if anyone knows of a good mechanic... So I should keep the top battery cable mount correct? Do you know if the cable has a fuse in it?

I have a 2004 XE.

Wolfman, I am sure you know?

I appreciate your answers!!!

Thanks,
Danna

Hi Danna,

Typically, keeping the top, primary post is best. Can you describe how it is coming apart or post a pic? Battery cables aren't that big of a deal at all, nor that expensive. The stock clamp is a two-piece design -- no fuse in it, those are elsewhere -- and even if you had to swap it out you could do it in a few minutes with a crescent wrench, if you had to. Does he mean you need a new battery? Can you post a pic? I'm not entirely sure of the issue here.

Shoot, the club run is in Big Bear this month, if it's something simple, buy the parts and we'll put it in then.

Also, as stated, the timing belt is to be done at 105K, along with a number of other items that are best replaced when everything in that area is opened up. Typically, gaskets, a bypass hose, water pump, etc. Not a cheap date, but best done by a reliable source.

Hey Danna, long time no see!! I think the last time I saw you was when me and emily's first run together in temecula! It was funny, every one thought we were a couple then and we weren't but now we're married smile how the time flies! smile

As far as your questions, the battery cable isn't that expensive, I may be wrong but I think you can see both ends of it from the top of the truck. Do what bobby says, get a spare from Kragen or what ever then bring it on the trail, these guys love late night fixes and mods smile
