I've also heard of it. Strange thing is they didn't distill it to get the alcohol that high. They did a staged fermentation with different yeasts. It's supposed to be pretty tasty (it ought to for $100/bottle!), which is pretty freakin hard to do with that much alcohol. It would be a fun project for a masterbrewer - but not much market for that kind of beer...

i want a bottle.

first of all its 24% alcohol by volume.
It comes in a 750ml bottle...
It is the first beer to ever break the 40 proof mark.

and its simply beautiful to look at:

more info:

"Sam Adams UTOPIAS MMII

Sam Adams Utopias MMII™ is the only beer (domestic or import) brewed with a fine selection of Noble hops, Hallertau Mittelfrueh, Tettnang Tettnanger, Spalt Spalter and Czech Saaz. The brew is then aged in port, scotch and cognac barrels. The brew uses: 2 Row Harrington, Caramel and Vienna Malts. The aroma offers the distinctive smell of cinnamon and vanilla with subtle hints of floral, citrus and pine. Sam Adams Utopias MMII offers a rich taste that is surprisingly light on the palette, featuring a smooth, lingering finish. Samuel Adams Utopias MMII, the strongest beer in the world to date, has 24 percent alcohol by volume and is 48 proof.

Due to the limited quantity and legal restriction we are not able to offer Sam Adams Utopias in all states.

I read about that in the paper the other day, I think I'd really strongly be tempted to consider buying one if I found it somewhere.

Sadly, it will probably taste like Sam Adams regular beer, which tastes like an armpit.

I tried their Triple Bock (blue bottle) a while back. Didn't much care for it...

Never thought any Sam Adams was all that great. Not too sure about the pit taste though. I'm with you Samuel, living in PA for a year you asked for a draft and you got a Yuengling. [Spit]

j/k. No, it's called homebrew or "import"... I can't count the number of times I've gone to a bar and seen Sam Adams, Summit, Sierra Nevada, Anchor, even Leinie's listed as "imports". [Laughing]

I'm in Rochester. The only good beer in this town flows from my tap.... That's unfortunate - since I have a lot of improving to to do yet. laugh But I really love it! ...And it's always getting better.

Nice. So when are you moving back? smile I much prefer the northern sides of MN and WI - the south seems so flat and boring... cool

Look, I'll take my Jim Beam, and a nice glass of ice, and I will be fine, thank you.

Beer is nice, but whiskey is twice as nice. I should stay on the stuff. It's the only time I am not basically about to bust an artery these days.

I'd probably pay $100 for a shlitz at this point. Funny how I seldom drink at home but I'm dying for one here.

I always thought Sam Adams tasted like Celery. (I've tried celery before, I can't vouch for the whole armpit thing.)

What, no near beer????

When I was over there, we head "moosehead" I think it was called. Non-alcoholic beer. Wasn't too bad. We had near parties, got near drunk, and had near hangovers smile
