I am thinking about getting a 2000 Xterra for my daughter. I am wondering about what type of expenses I might incur and at what mileage. I will be looking for 2 wheel drive. So tell me how many miles do you have and what has been replaced? confused

I'm at around 115,000 kms (71,457.6871 miles), only expenses so far aside from regular maintenance are um .... lemme think here .... I know there's gotta be something that cost me in the last three years ... nope. smile

78,000 miles and the only problems I had were a cracked coolant hose at 35,000 and a cracked heater hose at 60,000. Both covered under warrantee. The only other problem I had was when that tree reached out and broke my side mirror but thats another story. :p

46,000 miles... not a single problem, except losing the cup holder insert at 30,000 miles - found it again under drivers seat at 42,000 miles.

Wow, lucky daughter!

My X has 112K on the odometer, but I have only had it for about 2K miles. It runs great! So far, the only issues that werent maintenance were the A/C compressor and LF window switch.

I was lucky, the previous owner took it in for all the warranty work (manifold studs, cracked wheel, etc.) and did the timing belt too.

Try to get one that was well maintained and you should be good to go. If you are looking around 100K miles I think the 2 biggies are timing belt and plugs.

I have +97,000 on our 2000 SE 4x4, no major repairs just basic maint. Purchased it new, and not looking to get rid of it yet

Oh yeah my father-in-law had a 2000 also, traded it in with 76,000 on it for a Jeep Libery Limited, he regrets that move.

Ha, JEEP, it's whats for dinner! (saw that on the back of a jacked up H2)

I've had absolutely no problems with the X, save for it gobbling up all my money for gas. I expect to have it a long time, for 1.5 million miles, or until it dies... whichever comes first. cool

How about a 2002 Xterra with 68,000 miles, and it has the 100,000 mile warranty (transferrable). One owner. He is asking $12,500 (its a 4x4 5speed, manual locks and windows, enthusiast package with limited slip differential)

Is 30,000 miles a year too much? They are all highway miles.

My 2000 X has 122K now and has had the following problems (other than mtc):

25K: AC HP hose replaced under warranty
69K: AC shrader valves replaced, recharged freon
70K: AC HP hose replaced again
93K: Replaced clutch master and slave cylinder
121K: Passenger side exhaust manifold replaced, steering tie rod placed.

Just yesterday I noticed AC is not blowing out cold air again. It's almost right on schedule for another HP hose replacement. Previous one lasted 55K miles. This one has 52K miles. I wonder if I can do this myself.

2000 Xterra 4x2 bought 8/99 with 4 miles on it.
These mileages are approximate:
200mi rear passenger window motor
40k radiator hose leak-replaced all hoses.
70k oxygen sensor replaced
70k knock sensor replaced
75k low pressure a/c hose leak/replaced
80k high pressure a/c hose leak/replaced

I think thats most everything major. Have changed fluids, filters regularly along with putting lots and lots of gasoline in it.
115k replaced timing belt, water pump, drive belts and tensioner for maintenance purposes.

Overall it has been a good vehicle, several things have broken but it has never been anything that has left me or my wife stranded on the side of the road.
Has almost 121k on it now.

Fueler,

I am going to look for a 2000 4x2 automatic. Try to make driving as easy as possible for my daughter. At her age having enough hands for the cell phone and radio, let alone the steering wheel will be all she can handle.

I now have almost 66,000 miles. Replaced one rear spring pack (broken leaf, warranty repair), PC board in dash that controls gauges (warranty repair) and nothing else other than regular maintenance.

I should really replace the plastic front bumper corner that someone nearly pulled off when I wasn't on guard but the duct tape is holding it on so well that I hate to bother it.

Bought my 2000 used (stole it from buddy really....) Some lady had it for 3 years before me and drove it to and from work everyday on the highway......thats it.....no kids.....no dogs....nothing......80,000km of easy living.........nothing replaced according to the dealer who I bought it from and sold it to her (I know the guy)........like I said, as steal. laugh

It now has 130 000km on it and of course I had to have stuff fixed

Had a leaf spring replaced last year after having 600 lbs of carbon in the back for work - 90,000km (paid for by work too!!!) Having one on the other side replaced this weekend - 130,000km. Had a branch lunge at my driver side mirror and break it......bugger.....I cut him down with the saw I had in back [Finger] ......never do that again - 100,000km! Horn went - 100,000km......sounded like a someone was choling a duck under my hood for a while! [Freak] Had the sending unit replaced in the tank as a recall - 120,000km. Oh yeah, and I had a dump truck back into my X and take off the corner plastic bumper and smash the taillight [Spit] (I was lucky) - 115,000km. He gave me cash for everything......at the time he cursed at me until he realized the 25 year old was the engineer in charge of the job site he was working on..........then he changed his tune!

So really, the sending unit ($0.00), the horn ($20), the leaf springs ($250 total) are the only things that I have had to fix. the mirror was my fault ($210) and the bumper and taillight were that dumbass dump truck drivers fault ($0.00)!!

Gee, seems like I am hard on the X eh? Guess it lives up to what they say............tough as they come! [Smoking]

Thanks for all who posted so far. Overall not to many major problems. I was glad to here no transmission problems reported. I talked with a friend of mine who owns a transmission shop and he said he has NOT worked on one Xterra transmission yet. I know the X is relatively new, but I am sure there are some out there with some high mileage on them.

Shawman (or anyone else for that matter), do you know if replacing the knock sensor is a typical high milage maintenance item? Also where is it located, assuming that there is only one.

I just bought a new one, I have owned 5 Nissan pick up trucks before this. The Xterra is built on the good solid truck frame and has a good crash test rating. Be sure if you buy one that the fuel regulator connector recall has been done on it. I have been reading this forum for a week now and that seems to be the only problem on pre 03 models. Expect about 17 mpg in town, but it is safer than a Sentra or Civic, and she will be able to see over all that traffic.

I am selling my beloved 2000 Xterra.
It's a 2000 Sliver XE auto with all three packages, religiously maintained, all newer Bilstein's, show room clean = always had seat covers and heavy duty mats, new tires, new se rims covered under warranty. It has 74,500 miles and at 70k I had to replace the resistor block for the climatic control system. Cost $30.00 and 10min of work. Always did all Nissan scheduled maintenance. Added in cabin filter, SE side body molding, Draw tite hitch for our bike rack, Piaa headlights and Nissan fog light covers. It runs like it was new and I have never had any problems, I have loved the truck.
Asking $12,500.
I am in Cincinnati, oh. but could easily work out a deal.

I think I would look at some other trucks or cars before deciding on an X for your daughter. I've owned my 2000 X since late 2001 and had the following issues:

35k -steering wheel horn/airbag cover loose. Dealer tightened but loosened up a week later. Couldn't do anything else to fix

40k -throw out bearing replaced

57k -tranny grinding going into 3rd. Dealer to replace 3rd & 4th gears, parts delayed on backorder. Didn't fit when arrived, so a new tranny was installed. Also needed throw out bearing #2.

58k -problem developed again with throw out bearing. Replaced for a 3rd time, along with clutch.

59k -cracked exhaust manifold replaced
60k -sending unit replaced under recall

65k -HP AC hose leaking, replaced

I'm now at 68k hoping I can go 5k without something else. Has probably been the most problematic vehicle I have owned.

I have around 102000 miles on her and aside from regular maintenance, I had to replace the real main seal and oil pan gasket. The truck seems to hold up well.

Thanks for all the feedback. I finally purchased a Black 01 XE 2WD with 59,800 miles on it.
I have read alot about the manifold problems. When I first crank it up, I have not noticed any unusual sounds. Hopefully the manifold has been replaced already.
Anyone know how I might be able to tell?

It's a slight diesel-like sound when the engine is cold. Even if you hear nothing, just get it checked, it's worth the $60 or so if they find nothing. It might not be cold enough to make it noticeable, but it could still be cracked.
