I would like to tint the rear passenger and rear windows with limo tinting. Does anyone know if the existing tint shade is factory applied sheets or is it imbeded in the glass? This will determine if the existing tint shade needs to be stripped first.

Thanks for any information!

I'm pretty sure it's made that way. If it was sheets it would fade and crack after time no matter how well it was applied. It is an unfortunate fact of tinting.

The factory tint is 20% and it is IN the glass, i.e. it can't be removed.

Agreed with Philosopher.. It's 20%.. an baked into the glass.. if you want the back to be limo... throw on 35% an you'll be fine..

I thought about darkening the back side, but ended up just tinting the driver and passenger side windows to match the rears.

That pretty much darkened up the interior nicely, while still preserving visibility from inside the vehicle. From the outside it looks totally sano.

Total cost? $43!

The factory "tinting" is really just smoked glass, not an actual tinting film. I have limo tint (5%) on my side back windows and 20% on the front side windows and the rear window. Also a 5% glare strip. I like it because the back windows are pretty much opaque from the outside (can't see in) even in direct sunlight and the front windows are plenty dark enough. It takes some getting used to at night since its like a cave but you just have to watch a little more closely when you back up or switch lanes. You could also do the 35% thing and that would most likely give you pretty good results too. Heres a pic of mine if you wanna look:

I have limo tint (added on to the factory tint) all the way around except for the front driver and passenger windows, which are the legal 35%. I haul my mountain bike inside the truck and I don't want some thief see it and decide to steal it.
